I left the computer with the video paused. When I came back, "Antimalware Doctor" (which is a piece of malware) had exploded over the computer. Getting rid of this occupied me for most of the week. I was using Google Chrome, but I had the latest version, it occurs to me that I probably didn't have the latest version of some video player (e.g. flash). The conclusion is that not only do you need automatic updates to everything turned on, you also need to know about updates for obscure pieces of software you've never heard of. The general idea here is that websites supply corrupt content which exploits bugs in software to take control of computers. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O. Which Internet Security software were you using? Bullguard Internet Security 9 would probably have stopped this from happening before it did any damage. Secunia (www.secunia.com) does precisely that (for free). I've been using it for some months now with no hitches. I'm unsure whether the updates it has notified me about would not have been done automatically by the relevant bits of software anyway, but it gives a sense of added security. On the other hand it doesn't lessen the aptness of the subject line either! He was running up to date AVG anti-virus stuff, firewalls and security built into chrome. The malware stuff was a real pain to get rid of. It masqueraded as part of IE and if you tried to kill it, it reappeared. Downloaded programs designed to get rid of it initially failed. Even when booted in safe mode The only way he finally got a hold of it was to use Process Explorer (rather than task manager). This allowed him to examine each process and suspend the threads without killing it. With all the threads of the malware processes suspended he could then start killing things off and use the "fixer" programs to clean his PC It set up a pseudo proxy server that pointed back to itself which made getting out to the internet difficult too. Without a second "clean" machine to access the internet he would have been stuck. I understand "malware" is starting to appear for smart phones. Soon we'll have to have firewalls and anti-virus stuff on our phones too. Andy Ling -- This e-mail is intended for the named addressees only. It was very possibly nothing to do (directly) with the video or the specific web site either - malware in banner ads from a third party are very common. Firefox with the noscript plugin seems like the best way to be somewhat safe, I think, then you can see where each piece of content comes from on a page and choose whether to permit it or not. I guess there may be a similar plugin for Chrome. Flash and Acrobat have been the top two infection vectors for a while now, I think. (It even lets you watch > the ITVPlayer without adverts, but don't tell anyone, they might > fix it ;^) Yes, it is a bit of a sledgehammer, and does affect your overall browsing experience; I eventually got used to it though, and you end up with the sites you normally visit whitelisted (but without the banner ads etc). I guess I wouldn't recommend it to "normal end-users". As for the comment on Microsoft Security Essentials, it does have an decent reputation, it seems like an ok choice to me. All AV software is junk to some extent, it all compromises the normal operation of Windows, and yet it is still necessary. But overall I favour AV software with lowest system overhead and rely on something like noscript to prevent a lot of exploits from even trying to download. That, and never do your normal computing with administrator rights... BTW we occasionally have to handle faculty or student PCs which have this kind of problem, and we never try to clean windows (or Mac, for that matter - it does happen) systems after compromise. Retrieve essential documents, and reformat the hard drive including the MBR. Malware can hook into too many places to ever be sure of eradicating it. David, I might sound paranoid, but if you ever use that PC for online banking, purchasing stuff online, etc, I would hesitate to trust it without a reformat. Thanks for the comments. I did manage to repair my installation of Windows. I found that ctrl+alt+del would let me run task manager, killed relevant process. Ran MSE which claimed to remove virus files. Reboot, and check disk activated and "repaired" my HD. After that Windows would not boot - claiming a missing driver. Using another copy of Windows I found the registry had been changed, replacing a legitimate driver name with a made up one. I fixed that. Machine then booted but Antimalware Doctor was still active... I then ran MSE from the other copy of Windows and it successfully got rid of the virus. Various settings were still messed up, like no registry editing. No, after that lot I do not trust the Windows installation. I've bought a new drive and I'll start afresh. It's good of the authors of malware to splatter their windows all over, much worse if it sat in the background and noted down passwords. Having a second copy of Windows on the machine is a great help. I did find that there's a bootable linux CD image freely available (PCRegEdit) that lets you edit the registry, so that would have been another solution. Does anyone trust software coming from the above hard disc. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O. Hmm. I'm not so sure about these problems. There was some messing about with the shared C library, in that I went through some versions of OP which required the new 32 bit library and then moved back to versions that can use the standard one. I would be inclined to copy !OvnPro from my CD and then immediately apply the upgrade to the latest version from my web site. That should get rid of any need for the 32 bit C library. It's not clear to me how far you'll get without the 32 bit library using other pieces of software... I don't know what the "plain font" is - I've never heard that term. You might have a document somewhere that uses a font of that name which is being loaded on start-up. It's hard to say, one solution is to find the missing font and install it, but perhaps the loading of this document is not what you want, in which case the solution is to find it and remove it. Similarly are you installing from CD or have you copied OP across from an existing installation - in that case where I say install from CD above, just apply the upgrade to what you've got - in fact that may be the best idea anyway. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O. I recently needed to increase the number of pages and then dropped new jpegs into each of the new pages. The minimum size of a picture file to avoid it being embedded was set to 0. Before the new pages were added all pages showed the correct reference to the jpegs. It is vital that all pages are correctly referenced and not embedded since at print time the jpegs will change and the new ones must be used. As far as I can tell when the document is printed the correct jpegs are found but when I select picture->reference on the new pages the reference does not appear in the dialogue box. This worries me! Can anyone suggest a reason and a cure? John NB It is possible to change the proxy settings of the new pages. This worries me! The fundamental check is save the document as DDL, and look for the picture references with a text editor. I think the Picture->reference window should show the reference for the picture if there is one. You could always check by re-inserting a picture, forcing it to be referenced on load (ctrl+shift drag and drop (not sure)), and then looking at the reference window. Obviously in choices it is not just setting a min size to reference over, you also have to tick the box to automatically reference. Another issue, is that the RISC OS version of OP can't reference things that have to be translated - shouldn't apply to JPEGs but the program can be set up to translate JPEGs, and if you've done that then... -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O. Draging the picture into the page frame does not seem to work. A solution is to drag the jpeg file to the top of the reference dialogue box OR open the jpeg file from the pull down menu to the right of the reference entry in the reference dialogue box. THEN click on reference picture.
