In fact this version will probably run slower on old machines than the previous versions. I've had a lot of help to get this working - so thanks to those people. Coming soon is a version of Ovation Pro for ARM 7 which has been a lot of work. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Well done! What did you have to change? I would have thought that recompiling would have been enough? To avoid confusion, please do not use the term "ARM 7" in this context but ARMv7. The terms "ARM6", "ARM7", etc. usually refer to processor families whereas ARMv6, ARMv7 etc. refer to ARM architectures. The ARM7 processor family was introduced in 1994 and implements the ARMv3 architecture. All versions of SparkFS and OvationPro run fine on the ARM7 processor family (e.g., on the ARM710 processor as found in the RiscPC 700). What did you have to change? I would have thought that >recompiling would have been enough? Yes I just recompiled it. However back in September there wasn't a web page that said "change these compiler settings". Anyway change the compiler settings, recompile Ovation Pro and it falls over. I'm hoping my experiences with OP will help others. One problem has turned out to be code that isn't 32 bit compatible - somehow it has managed to run on Iyonix with no problem but then fails on the OMAP. It has been disappointing that I have missed the problems - I had a big trawl through the sources when the Iyonix came out. One example was in the s.poll code, which came from Acorn as part of RISC OS lib - there is a check for hardware float support, if there is hardware the code goes off somewhere else and I'd not converted that to 32 bits. Another lovely bug was ptr=base+offset; data=ptr->member; which type 5'd due to non-word aligned memory access. The catch was that 'offset' was -1 on initialisation, signifying an empty structure. Did no harm, didn't fault on Windows, but we now have a RISC OS that hardware enforces word aligned structures. >To avoid confusion, please do not use the term "ARM 7" in this context >but ARMv7. I knew I'd say the wrong thing "new chip thingy", is that OK? -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. April 2010) at: http://www.davidpilling.com/ovationpro/upgrade/op277.zip The aim here is compatibility with ARM v7 architecture (OMAP and Beagle board). As described in the previous thread about the new version of SparkFS getting this to work has been troublesome. It's been pointed out to me that on the RISC OS Open web site: http://www.riscosopen.org/wiki/documentation/pages/ARMv7+compatibility+pr imer there is a comment to the effect that non-32 bit compatible code does actually run on the Iyonix, confirming my experience - code assumed to be successfully converted to 32 bits, hasn't always been. In the great 32 bit conversion when Iyonix came out, there were some non-trivial pieces of work, it may only now be seen how successful that work was - SparkFS is one example and the hand converted code in that was OK. The problems of this type in Ovation Pro were trivial stuff - just a matter of failing to look at various assembler files. I've had a lot help getting Oation Pro to work on ARM v7 from "Tank" (R.Kinton), the new version is a tribute to his patience and my incompetence. Unfortunately I can't now say everything is perfect. It may well be the case that certain operations in OP cause code to be executed which crashes on ARM v7. I'd like anyone having such experiences to report the problems to me. The twin dangers are incompatible code lurking in some feature, and wrongly aligned data structures. Although I've always attempted to put my data on word boundaries, it's a step further to say that it always is on word boundaries and that there aren't situations where non-word access does no harm, but will now result in a type 5 crash. I have made the assumption that the existing ARM code based applets are OK. So no upgrades to them now. In summary, it's a big complicated program. p.s. To my big surprise both ArtWorks itself and AWViewer (which uses the same ArtWorks rendering modules that the applet uses) work just fine on ARM v7, so if your glue code works, then there should not be any problems. The only problem I can see with this, is if an applet requires a particular version of OPro and check for its version number. If there is a particular feature that's been fixed in say version 2.77x how could an applet use programversion() to check for a working version. ... on saying this I'm not sure how many applets (other than some of my own) bother to check that the version of OPro is correct. I only started using it when some of my applets relied on features of certain versions and I started to receive bug reports from users running older versions. All new versions are experiments (!) - seriously, the three changes I have made are bug fixes to the existing version for Iyonix. One of them is a bug fix for the Windows version and non-32 bit ARM. The situation is different to the move to 32bits when there was a load of fiddly new ARM code that might have crashed on older machines. Users of older ARM architectures gain from the new version. You make a fair comment though, and potentially the recompile might have upset something - but that's back to all new versions being experimental. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Well on this 'ere Mac, both Wndows and Ubuntu run in emulations, and quite excellently too: very stable and really rather fast. The convenience of having this all in the one box keeps the space and cost down and makes it very easy to transfer data between systems. And VRPC runs in emulation too, though occasionally I do have to get the Iyonix fired up to get over the infrequent limitation of VRPC. -- Tim Powys-Lybbe tim@powys.org for a miscellany of bygones: http://powys.org/ To unsubscribe or subscribe goto: http://www.freelists.org/list/davidpilling From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Thu Apr 8 21:20:12 2010 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1Nzy3e-28QGPo-03-DIr.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Thu, 8 Apr 2010 21:20:12 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1Nzy3e-28QGPo-03-DIr; Thu, 08 Apr 2010 20:10:34 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.245] (lhlo=lon1-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1Nzy3e-28QGPo-03 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Thu, 08 Apr 2010 20:10:34 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by lon1-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1Nzy3c-0001yY-6z for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Thu, 08 Apr 2010 20:10:34 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id ED913CDEA24; Thu, 8 Apr 2010 16:10:30 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id MEiW9p9EmpUd; Thu, 8 Apr 2010 16:10:30 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 63E33CE08EC; Thu, 8 Apr 2010 16:10:17 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Thu, 08 Apr 2010 16:10:17 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 39B91CE0A57 for ; Thu, 8 Apr 2010 16:10:17 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id ILpTCW5IivTZ for ; Thu, 8 Apr 2010 16:10:17 -0400 (EDT) Received: from lon1-post-3.mail.demon.net (lon1-post-3.mail.demon.net [195.173.77.150]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id D43DACE08EC for ; Thu, 8 Apr 2010 16:10:15 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([62.49.20.172]) by lon1-post-3.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 4.69) id 1Nzy32-0001t4-fR for davidpilling@freelists.org; Thu, 08 Apr 2010 20:10:12 +0000 Message-ID: Date: Thu, 8 Apr 2010 21:08:49 +0100 To: davidpilling@freelists.org From: David Pilling Subject: [softwarelist] Re: Ovation Pro 2.77 (6th April) RISC OS ARM v7 References: <+JNl7BF$UIvLFwpU@pilling.demon.co.uk> In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=us-ascii;format=flowed User-Agent: Turnpike/6.02-S () X-archive-position: 2425 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: flist@pilling.demon.co.uk Precedence: normal Reply-To: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-CNFS-Analysis: v=1.0 c=1 a=Oyhn9OpegMgA:10 a=cwSeiBLpj2MA:10 a=ORa4HqFjfvEA:10 a=kj9zAlcOel0A:10 a=v6Aic-fSAAAA:8 a=U7UbAiMzAAAA:8 a=dqhQn4rJAAAA:8 a=D_VmOLqjAAAA:8 a=ukx54lNczYoyy0kjJssA:9 a=urZiSp7Rb_r3azn8X3IA:7 a=biThFbiWwxFbRa5bP-Rg1efIKJoA:4 a=CjuIK1q_8ugA:10 a=wl_QvbsadU8A:10 a=mgCTfJ2AzJW4YDc8:21 a=77PqK6yZwHyQKi47:21 Hi, In message , Tim Powys-Lybbe writes >Well on this 'ere Mac, both Wndows and Ubuntu run in emulations, and >quite excellently too: very stable and really rather fast. I don't think so, though I know that the basic Mac runs under Linux these days. I use a program called VMWARE to set up partitions on the Mac under which Windows and Ubuntu run. How all this is done, I don't know! > (Depends if it is a Mac post the Apple move to Intel x86 chips). > > As I said at the time Iyonix came out, people who had moved RISC OS to > emulation could consider the 32 bit conversion an irritation. On the contrary: the advantage of the 32-bit operating system is that it can handle much larger files. Some of the graphics work I do just will not work under VARPC and I have to get the Iyonix going. I am hoping that by the time the Iyonix packs up I will be able to get RISC OS 5 working on some other resource. Some have already reported they can get RISC OS 5 working on RPCemu and on the Beagle board, so there's hope. -- Tim Powys-Lybbe tim@powys.org for a miscellany of bygones: http://powys.org/ From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Mon Apr 19 15:01:02 2010 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1O3rQJ-1RgGPo-05-Ace.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 15:01:02 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1O3rQJ-1RgGPo-05-Ace; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 13:54:03 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.72] (lhlo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1O3rQJ-1RgGPo-05 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 13:54:03 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1O3rQF-0005Yh-Hg for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 13:54:03 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 24597CE714C; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 09:53:57 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id hRr7vNiGdXSd; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 09:53:56 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 32E69CE709E; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 09:53:43 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Mon, 19 Apr 2010 09:53:43 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 02581CE7108 for ; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 09:53:43 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 5SOGFRnV20LV for ; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 09:53:42 -0400 (EDT) Received: from anchor-post-1.mail.demon.net (anchor-post-1.mail.demon.net [195.173.77.132]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id BBBCCCE709E for ; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 09:53:41 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([62.49.20.172]) by anchor-post-1.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 4.69) id 1O3rPr-00055k-i3 for davidpilling@freelists.org; Mon, 19 Apr 2010 13:53:40 +0000 Message-ID: Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2010 14:52:01 +0100 To: David Pilling From: David Pilling Subject: [softwarelist] DPScan RISC OS Armv7 version 1.25 14th. However it is a good example of where problems lie with ARM v7. A lot of the program is concerned with protocols and code which comes from PC land where they like to use 16 bit integers. This is exactly where it goes wrong - TWAIN, TIFF, PNG and JPEG. A simple recompile has fixed all the problems. From this point of view Ovation Pro was a fluke - it doesn't use 16 bit words. I have also fixed the Epson scanner driver and TWAIN manager - again the 16 bits in the TWAIN protocol and a recompile. I'm not sure how much interest there will be in these items - so they're not on my web site. Seems quite amazing to me that scanning works - USB of course. Given the messing about that has gone on with scanner drivers you're best sticking with what works, don't think that upgrading might be fun. Again, thanks to 'tank' for assistance with sorting this out. Am I going to have to go through everything like this - I'm hoping not. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O.
