My experience is that a page size is shown, but clicking on the icon to the right of the page size to open the menu to change page size results in an error message. I believe I've got the definitions of the menus wrong. However on Windows this is not a big deal anyway - unlike RISC OS, windows expand to fill the screen, so zooming should let you get at anything. If I find I can't see all of an image I almost never change the page size, what I do, is change the images resolution using the two dpi icons in the info palette. This only changes how the image is displayed - compare with using the Edit->resize function which actually alters the data. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. I suppose fit to paper size would work, but then there would be a loss of scale for scaled drawings. I mainly want to use it for making 1 bpp drawings out of scans I have done. Everything else I have tried seems to end up with a higher bpp when convert to black and white is selected rather than gray scale. In a manner of speaking 'every' font has roman numerals. If a font had them in place of the 1-9 range it would work only in that range, You couldn't just type 3754 and get a correct roman number (IIIVIIVIV is rubbish). I've a couple of comments. There is a function itors() which gives the roman string for a decimal number. You could define a macro with a body of: {macv=itors(222)} if you wanted to insert the roman string for 222. It would be very simple to turn this into an applet which provided someway of collecting the number from the user. In fact it might be possible to do it as a macro. itors == Integer TO Roman String - a poor name with hindsight. Secondly, roman strings appear in auto numbered paragraphs. There is probably a way of numbering pages using this (if the built in page numbers are not what you want) - something like an auto link chain of frames loaded with a big file of sequences. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. If you look at the size of a full stop in a font editing program you will see it is slightly more than the diameter of the full stop itself. I believe this to be approx. 0,2mm to 0,5mm. You can see this in a OP document at 1000%; select Ruler and set some vertical guidelines. Another way to visualize this is to place the caret at the end of the line. If this ends with a full stop you'll see that the caret is somewhat to the right of the full stop. When the line ends with a letter the caret "touches" this letter. The difference is far greater with Corpus or Evenletter. With these fonts the full stop will appear exactly in the middle under the last letter at the end of the line above. What precedes is valid for serif fonts. Non serif fonts sometimes use more space than the design of the letter is wide (e.g. in Homerton the letter o versus the letter t). Wider space than the letter/token design also exists for the hyphen (in Trinity) and some other tokens. Maybe EFF have fonts with "zero" size to the right of the full stop and other tokens concerned, so I send them a copy of this message (hoping the address is correct). -- Greetings, JohnvV To unsubscribe or subscribe goto: http://www.freelists.org/list/davidpilling From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Tue Oct 21 13:54:28 2008 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1KsGb4-4Kaknw-02-BoD.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 13:54:28 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1KsGb4-4Kaknw-02-BoD; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 12:44:26 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.245] (lhlo=lon1-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1KsGb4-4Kaknw-02 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 12:44:26 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by lon1-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1KsGb1-0005Fy-VO for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 12:44:26 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 66FA2A8E54B; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 08:44:23 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 31909-05; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 08:44:23 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id DF040A7BEC3; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 08:44:22 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Tue, 21 Oct 2008 08:43:44 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id D9539A8E54B for ; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 08:43:44 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 31781-07 for ; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 08:43:44 -0400 (EDT) Received: from anchor-post-31.mail.demon.net (anchor-post-31.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.89]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id A713EA8C61C for ; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 08:43:44 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([62.49.20.172]) by anchor-post-31.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 4.67) id 1KsGaN-0003wq-4Q for davidpilling@freelists.org; Tue, 21 Oct 2008 12:43:43 +0000 Message-ID: Date: Tue, 21 Oct 2008 13:42:06 +0100 To: davidpilling@freelists.org From: David Pilling Subject: [softwarelist] Re: OPW - Enhanced justification References: <48FCFBE3.5020701@ed.ac.uk> In-Reply-To: <48FCFBE3.5020701@ed.ac.uk> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=us-ascii;format=flowed User-Agent: Turnpike/6.02-S () X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain X-archive-position: 1022 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: flist@pilling.demon.co.uk Precedence: normal Reply-to: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain X-CNFS-Analysis: v=1.0 c=1 a=U0woBiPAYjUA:10 a=cwSeiBLpj2MA:10 a=pMdtZHg6hnHVLmAUEJaFkA==:17 a=dqhQn4rJAAAA:8 a=D_VmOLqjAAAA:8 a=4kKp12NNWYV4bY1ohMUA:9 a=eqoOmBPj6JCwrC6neXEA:7 a=lybuJVsTj-hOIvB6kpzIdKqlwdIA:4 a=yoW3GxOvyaEA:10 a=eFmMTfMF8WMA:10 a=5WZzfXpOq_gA:10 X-Antivirus: AVG for E-mail 8.0.169 [270.8.2/1735] In message <48FCFBE3.5020701@ed.ac.uk>, Clive Bonsall writes >There appears to be a consistent problem when a line ends in a full >stop, which becomes more evident when there are several such lines >close together. It's hard to say without seeing an example. One thought that occurred to me is that on Windows characters are painted on pixel boundaries, and pixels are quite wide (e.g. 120 per inch). To improve on screen results OPW has to do some fiddling inserting pixels. It's different on RISC OS where the font painting takes place at a much higher resolution (1/72000 th's of an inch). Anyway my suggestion is to turn on direct PostScript output, and view the results (on a PostScript printer or GhostScript/GSView). This is also true for other chars. Before and after. This is called the character width. When you apply kerning between 2 chars, you change the total width between outline of 2 characters. > The difference is far greater with Corpus or Evenletter. With these > fonts the full stop will appear exactly in the middle under the last > letter at the end of the line above. Of course. Both fonts are monospaced. Each character has the same character width (= space before and space after outline of character and the width of the character itself). For a full stop there is more space before and after the outline than for a character like M or W. What can be seen for the full stop, is also visible for exclamation mark, comma, colon and semi colon. And maybe other characters. Same for quotation mark and apostrophe, when used as first char in a line of text. This isn't wrong. It is essential for a proportional spaced font. Same goes for height and width of outlines of characters. Several measurements are 'optical' or 'visual' correct, but metrical not. An 'o' or 'p' or 'm' are higher than an 'i' or 'v' or 'z'. A bow is always metrical higher or wider than a horizontal or vertical flat part of a character. I think the problem has arisen because of differences in the Acorn and Windows C compilers. I'll put a fixed version on the Ovation Pro CD web site this afternoon - Sunday 26th October - www.davidpilling.com/cd The problem is in text formatting, so you'll have to force a "reflow" of the text. If only one line is a problem just delete a character and put it back, to reflow the whole document make a change to the bodytext style, close the edit style window, and then go back and put the style back to what it was, I suggest changing the background colour of text. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Thanks. I see a definite improvement to the example I sent you, tho' there is still a slight variation in the positions of line endings with respect to the right margin. (n.b. OPW Help tells me I'm using the 26 October version, and I've reflowed the text as per your instructions). The new version of the example file can be found in the usual place. -- C.B. On trying >to open it today, I get the error message: "Document contents have >changed since being saved". > >Can anyone suggest what may have gone wrong, and if/how the file might >be recovered? I put in a check of the contents of documents to spot if files were corrupted whilst on disc - in other words this error indicates that a file has been damaged by the filing system (and not by Ovation). Once in a while when I turn on my Windows computer it tells me it is checking the file system - it grinds away for half an hour and then boots as normal. What it doesn't tell me is that whilst it does this, it sometimes deletes files or changes their contents. (yes I did buy a new disc drive and reinstall Windows). I'd have a look at the file, does Windows show the length as something reasonable for what you think is in it. Load it into Notepad, do the contents look reasonable - I'm saying that as a programmer, but if you've now got a file of all zeros or FF's or there is no meaningful text in it, there's not much hope. I believe you can turn off the check on file contents when loading from OP general choices* - if you're lucky whatever has changed may not be serious. I'd try this first.
