It works fine apart from that. It was originally a BMP file which I converted to JPEG with !DPlingScan. I now have to take a decision which I never wanted to take and that is whether to change completely to Windows XP as I cannot justify running two seperate systems and I have a lot of input come in the form of DOC and XLS files these days as well as having to use windows for web browsing to be reliable. I am still reluctant about moving but at least I know it is practical to do so now - I shall give it a couple of months thought in a hopeful wait for announcements of an upgraded Iyonix. -- JayCee From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Mon Jun 11 22:16:31 2007 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1HxoWz-07K000-04-Fn8.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 22:16:31 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1HxoWz-07K000-04-Fn8; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 18:22:21 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.210] (lhlo=lon1-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1HxoWz-07K000-04 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 18:22:21 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by lon1-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1HxoWw-00036Q-HZ for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 18:22:21 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 87EF16F2C50; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 14:19:55 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 10715-05; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 14:19:55 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 191566F2E95; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 14:19:55 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Mon, 11 Jun 2007 14:19:15 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 513916F2C50 for ; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 14:19:15 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 10547-05 for ; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 14:19:15 -0400 (EDT) Received: from relay.freeuk.net (relay.freeuk.net [212.126.144.54]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id BCD3D6F2824 for ; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 14:19:13 -0400 (EDT) Received: from richardbrock.plus.com ([84.92.57.121] helo=RPC) by relay.freeuk.net with asmtp (Exim 4.34) id 1HxoVn-000IW7-6c for davidpilling@freelists.org; Mon, 11 Jun 2007 19:21:07 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Richard Brock To: davidpilling@freelists.org Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2007 19:20:36 +0100 Subject: [softwarelist] Re: OvPro for Windows Message-ID: <4ef1669f6bbadger.sett@freeuk.com> In-Reply-To: References: <5316cbed4e.jaycee@jaycee.ntlworld.com> <2oYxMSA4+IZGFwue@pilling.demon.co.uk> <474e0bee4e.jaycee@jaycee.ntlworld.com> User-Agent: Pluto/3.04b (RISC-OS/4.39) POPstar/2.05 Content-Type: text/plain X-Clara-Relay: Message sent using Claranet Relay Service using auth code: rb02 X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain X-archive-position: 630 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: badger.sett@freeuk.com Precedence: normal Reply-to: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain In article , JayCee wrote: > I now have to take a decision which I never wanted to take and that is > whether to change completely to Windows XP as I cannot justify running > two seperate systems and I have a lot of input come in the form of DOC > and XLS files these days as well as having to use windows for web > browsing to be reliable. I was in a similar position a couple of years ago. My problem was desktop space (lack of). The solution I discovered then and still use very happily (amongst other plusses - retaining e-mail on Pluto... bliss!) is a Linksys KVM splitter which allows both the PC and the RPC to share the same keyboard and screen... just double click the 'Scroll Lock' button to switch between the two. Maybe utterly irrelevant to your situation, but thought I'd mention it in case! Canon IX-4015 DPLingScan 1.24 Twain 2. I was scanning some old 24pin Dot matrix printed documents and assumed the scanning window setting right in the centre that defaults to "No correction" when re set to "DotMatrix" would give me a cleaner scan, it errored out. I can't actually remember which now, but couple of the settings errored out, and another one worked, but presented the scan upside down and the text backwards. If you really want to know, I could run it again over the weekend. Cheers Dave S PS: I appreciate the Canon is now very old, but generally it still works, and it is difficult to get a new scanner that'd work under RO. Surprising. Those settings are Epson specific and should be disabled on the other drivers. Perhaps of little interest, but I created some key short cuts for switching on and off both the tool box and the info palette, so that they are only there when I really need them. Every new document therefore starts completely blank (I never use the button bars) - wouldn't you call that optimal use of the screen? Personally (on Windows) I would like to have MDI windows (documents all open in a parent window) and have the toolbox and info palette etc. as dockable toolbars. It might be helpful if you post the syntax you've used in the DDL file. I have just tried a few variations and there does seem to be somthing amiss with Opro 2.77 (26 Feb 2007) on RISC OS. A full path reference in a DDL file works as expected: PICTURE_11f={picture {reference "RAM::RamDisc0.$.Test.sa00"} } Changing that to a relative path as per the example on p143 of the manual results in a blank picture frame with a cross through as though Display Images was off. PICTURE_126={picture {reference "{filepath}.^.sa00"} } Selecting the picture frame and Menu > Picture > Reference results in a Type=5 error. The effect is the same if the relative reference is created in an OPro documemt which has been saved, then the DDL file is exported with the above relative syntax. Double-click the DDL file to load it and save as a new OPro Doc. Close that and re-open it still doesn't display the picture and gives the Type=5 error trying to see the reference information. Re-opening the OPro doc generated from the DDL file and saving as DDL shows the presence of the picture frame but no picture information. Opening a DDL file with relative path for a referenced picture and immediately re-saving as DDL saves without any indication of what picture belongs in the picture frame. Dave Thomas - can you test with a simple Opro document with a single picture frame and confirm this behaviour or detail what you do see. Beware of the Type=5 errors - Opro closes with no option to save any open documents. Changing the name of the directory {filepath}.^ (in this case RAM::RamDisc0.$.Test.Reftest.^ to RAM::RamDisc0.$.Reftest.Reftest.^) so that the old expansion held within an Opro document is no longer valid and re-opening the document the picture is still displayed. Editting and re-saving the document, even opening the reference Dialogue box editing and saving dpesn't change the original full path seen iin the OPro file when viewed in a text editor. David Pilling - Is there any way to use a dummy path (even OvationPro$Dir) when reading a DDL file with relative picture references so that the {filepath} can be resolved when the file has been saved and is re-opened? My first thought is that when a DDL file is loaded, things work as if a new document had been created - just like if you click on the icon bar icon. The point being that such a new document does not have a {filepath} - because it has never been saved. One idea is that you set the RISC OS CSD in such a way that if {filepath} evaulates to the null string references work. So: {filepath}.^.sa00"} would evaluate to "".^.sa00 the CSD (set via F12 or a task window using the dir command) would have to be one level below the file sa00 - e.g. create a temporary folder and set the CSD to it. Obviously you could edit the DDL, but that means losing the relative paths, although you could get them back again using the collect feature. I think one of the original ideas was that these paths can contain macro expansions ({filepath} of course is an example) which can involve system variables. The point being that such a new document does not have a > {filepath} - because it has never been saved. Sorry I didn't make my meaning clear. In light of the last paragraph which was snipped (an OPro document with a relative path may also hold a no-longer-valid full path), is it possible to make OPro put in something for a full path (which is valid even though that is not where the referenced pictures are) when creating the new document from the DDL? I mentioned OvationPro$Dir because it will always evaluate to a valid path. > > One idea is that you set the RISC OS CSD in such a way that if > {filepath} evaulates to the null string references work. > > So: > > {filepath}.^.sa00"} > > would evaluate to > > "".^.sa00 > > the CSD (set via F12 or a task window using the dir command) would have > to be one level below the file sa00 - e.g. create a temporary folder and > set the CSD to it. The folder containing the document and the pictures has a folder called TempCSD and TempCSD is set as the CSD from the filer. The DDL from the document is saved to the same folder as the document and the pictures. A new document from the DDL still results in no pictures and a type=5 error when trying to open the Reference dialogue box. > Obviously you could edit the DDL, but that means losing the relative > paths, although you could get them back again using the collect feature. I have checked that absolute paths in the DDL file are maintained and the pictures referenced when a new document is created from the DDL, and when a new DDL is made from the descendant document. Dave Thomas - This is the bit you need to work round the problem - use search and replace on the DDL file to make the relative paths absolute and a new document will still have referenced pictures, just not be so portable. Are these behaviours the same in the Windows version? > I think one of the original ideas was that these paths can contain macro > expansions ({filepath} of course is an example) which can involve system > variables. > > So you could define a macro - call it myfilepath with a body of > {filepath} > > when you want to use something other than filepath you just redefine the > macro body as > > My understanding of Dave's original post was that he had a document with embedded pictures which he changed to all referenced by relative paths and then took a DDL file as insurance but found that he lost the references. So, given the fairly frequent advice when a document exhibits problems to "save as DDL and start from there" this is going to cause problems for anyone using referenced pictures in a document of significant size. Is there an easy way (a global way) to change all pictures in a document from embedded to referenced? I can see the other way is relatively easy and catered for with buttons in the Reference dialogue box. I suppose this would involve saving the picture data out from the document to the directory specified in Collect all referenced pictures. Perhaps an easier fix would be to evaluate the relative path to an absolute path when saving DDL. It might also be useful to solely (I wrote simply but realised it is unlikely to be simple to implement) change the reference to relative if the relative path evaluates to the folder specified in Collect referenced pictures instead of making copies with a new name. Thanks for that. {filepath} having no initial value makes sense. > My understanding of Dave's original post was that he had a document with > embedded pictures which he changed to all referenced by relative paths and > then took a DDL file as insurance but found that he lost the references. Not quite - the DDL file contained the relative references as expected, but they just weren't being resolved into pictures upon reload. Now that I know that {filepath} has no inital value in this circumstance I've changed them to be relative to the parent application directory and that works. By way of some background, I'm storing the document in DDL format in a CVS repository. That way I can diff against previous versions. Regards, Dave
