I think it installs with these applets not active - so did you have to activate them? and once it was in a state of crashing how did you deactivate them? Anyway I've tried OPW on my copy of Vista with the above applets active and it works. I wonder if someone knows how to make a double page spread in a chapter a different colour to the rest of the chapter. I have an article in the magazine which is rather lengthy, and to break it up I want to put a picture in the corner which fades out to 5% black, and then have the rest of that double page spread also 5% black. Now I've managed to do this by splitting up the article physically and have three chapters for the article, but I keep getting rouge pages, where sometimes the lines wrap around as I edit. If I can just have the middle two pages of the article a different colour it would save a lot of hassle. Also, I have turned off auto-hyphenation, but where I have frames that don't quite come to the edge of a text column, I'm getting rouge characters, or words that are split up into letter along side a frame. I can't find a button that will stop this from happening! Any one know anything? How about changing the text repulsion (flow) settings > for the overlying frames. I've tried this, but I'm using an irregular frame in this particular problem. Is there a setting somewhere that means that I can turn the 'word collection' on, or something similar? I've heard this comment before, I just can't recall if anything was ever done about it. Text flow can be applied to irregular frames too. You can alter the stand off distance, and getting more sophisticated you can edit the stand off curve. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. My version here has a entry for both of the spelling applets but not for SWRE. If what you say is so then its mere presence there is having an effect. Incidentally, the Manifest settings for the SpellITA and SpellFR applets is '1' in both cases. Not quite. It is up to eSpeak whether it wants to support exotic things like ligatures. Since it does not it is up to the application to supply the data in a format eSpeak understands. It is on the web site at: http://pilling.users.netlink.co.uk/ovationpro/applets/files/speech.zip I've no doubt it is on the CD too. I've not had much to do with this applet, John Wallace @ Beebug wrote it, I suspect I've never had the speech module, so I've not done much testing. Martin, of course one has to draw the line somewhere, but supporting ligatures would not have been too hard. It has made me wonder how easy it would be to do the applet on Windows. I have read that Vista comes with speech recognition built in. Finally in passing, my .com, .net and .co.uk web sites addresses are messed up at the moment - I've always tried to give such addresses whilst others have often used the absolute addresses (as above), for now they have been proved right. My likely strategy now is to move everything to the davidpilling.info site. So if it is years hence and you're reading this, the above will not be there. OK - it looks like v. 2 of the speak module did speak the ligatures, but I have just found v. 3.03 on my hard drive, and after installing that it doesn't. So it does look as if the applet needs to be modified to speak these ligatures. This is not surprising because V3 is a complete rewrite and it is cross-platform. The codes for ligatures are RISC OS specific and outside the ISO Latin-1 range, so you are unlikely to have any luck with them in cross-platform software. The eSpeak documentation should really state in what encoding it expects its input. I didn't know that Impression could show you their scope - > how does that work? Just in case you are using Ovation-speak, I actually said their 'span' - not their 'scope'. What I meant was that when you search for a Style in Impression with, say: {"Heading"}@ i.e. any text with the "Heading" Style you are shown, by highlighting, the full extent of each occurrence of the Style in the text as you step through - rather than (as per SRWE) only showing the start position of the Style. I find Impression's method incredibly useful for tidying up long documents prior to release: picking up instances where careless Style application has crept in e.g. a Style 'underneath' another which needs to be re-applied 'on top'; Styles which inadvertently span over subsequently-introduced page breaks; places where the Style is actually applied twice to two contiguous sub-sections rather than one application over the whole section. Some of these may not be particularly worrisome for normal Impression/OPro usage (although some are) but tidying up the document in this way also plays an important part of getting a good HTML output when using !meDDLe. So my interest in Style searching is perhaps a bit keener. -- Regards from Ray Favre. Off hand I don't know its location, but over the years when people have asked I have managed to track it down via Google etc. You'd be better off using Zip files for new work. I think Zip has been a better format since 1992, when I proposed the extensions necessary to use it for RISC OS files. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. It's hard to know. Quite possibly you have set out to create a huge Zip file and SparkFS has crashed due to a bug which is only revealed when handling massive files. You didn't mention how big you expected the Zip file to be - e.g. do a count on what it is you're zipping. Equally possible is that a bug caused a crash after the first small file was added and the 2GB archive is the result of the machine crashing with an open file. If things have crashed whilst a Zip file is being manipulated I would expect the Zip to be corrupt - typically the central directory at the end of the file will be missing or corrupt. So it is interesting that you get another crash if you try to open the file. You can use the *ZipUseCentralDirectory command to change how SparkFS opens the zip file or use Spark - both of these offer the chance to examine the contents of the zip without using the central directory. Configuration comes into play - you can configure how much memory SparkFS is given (SparkFS choices). If I try to create a big archive without giving SparkFS enough memory I get an error message and have to start again. So a good idea would be to give SparkFS plenty of memory before starting the operation. Finally the problem might be outside of SparkFS. I'm sorry for the trouble. I don't like the talk about checking discs, it brings back unhappy memories. As soon as I wrote the old Spark program circa 1989 someone posted on comp.sys.acorn that it corrupted their hard disc. Spark and SparkFS sit on top of the disc file system, as long as the file system is robust they can't corrupt the disc. One more thought, you say "it eventually crashed the machine" what does that mean? Was there an error message? Or was the machine just sat there apparently doing nothing? We've covered the latter case here before, the problem is how do you determine if the machine has crashed or if it is just taking a long time to compress a file? When making hard disc backups I often turn off compression, it makes things go a lot faster. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. What colour model is the picture in? If you use a CMYK bitmap, then it should appear as such in the resulting PDF file, at least it does when using the RISC OS version. In that case, a pixel that is defined to consist of black and magenta only will only separate to the Black and Magenta plate. If you use an RGB bitmap or a JPEG, then you have no control over how the colours are eventually separated. In case you have not used the Direct PS output in OPW you may want to try that and convert to PDF from there. It has a much better chance of getting such things right than the Windows PostScript printer driver. Using SparkFS? Does that not take ages? I do not really think that this approach is sensible. But I cannot see why it should be necessary anyway. Would it not be easier to format your external USB hard drive to RISC OS format? Actually, if it is bigger than 2GB you will need to do that anyway to make use of its size. So, I cannot see any situation where that would make sense unless you have a directly attached external FAT-formatted USB hard drive with 2GB or less that you also want to use on a non-RISC OS machine and that seems very unlikely. > [...] > > Another re-boot. Menu->ZipFile->Count gave 2.1nn-something Gigabytes. > > Is that size the problem? Yes. SparkFS implements an image filing system. The size limit for a file handled using such a filing system is 2GB. In case SparkFS fails to check for that limit it is not surprising that there is a crash. And yes, such a crash would usually mean that the Filer is killed, so no surprises there. So, the bottom line is that you cannot create zip files larger than 2GB using SparkFS. You could, in theory, create zip files larger than that using other tools, e.g., InfoZip, but please bear in mind that the overall RISC OS limit for file sizes in general is 4GB, so that is a hard limit.
