If you change it for the Windows version would that change filter back to RISC OS? I think the suggested different behaviour is more intuitive, so less likely to catch-out new users. The current behaviour obviously caught-out an experienced user of OPro in Keith Hopper. At the time the version with modified behaviour is released you could warn people (in the release announcement, on the website) to keep a copy of their current version so they can go back for particular documents if the change causes problems and they feel the effort of changing the document to work the new way is not worthwhile. Perhaps changes which will affect the way existing documents work/display/print could be released with a significant version number change as an indication of major change and possible document incompatibility. Taking Keith Hopper's ToC as an example, a document which has a spare tab somewhere early in a line to get the leaders displaying later on the line would end up with a spare (unnecessary) tab character, with leader if it past the position of the first tab which doesn't have a leader. As these are spare tabs inserted to get the visual effect desired removing them would tidy up the document but could be a pain for a long document. Because this work-around is unlikely to be easy to apply consistently within a document an alternative style which gets round it may have been applied (my preference I think). Too true - I find an option in preferences much more effective than pages of explanations in release notes. That way, users have a much bigger chance of curing the problem when they find a document rendering problem in this specific area. I am replying to this, but I have also read Martin's useful thoughts which I have fed in to the following - I like Martin's use of the terms fixed and ragged, but I am uncertain about his application of them to left tabs. If a left tab is given a leader than this has a fixed right end - the tab. However, surely it also has a fixed left end - the 'natural' width of the preceding text having produced this. A tab is merely padding from the last text set at its natural width up to the defined point. The crucial point as I see it is if we have two or more tabs some of which have leaders and some of which do not. If these are all left tabs then surely the leader must be set from the (fixed) position of the previous tab (whether associated with a leader or not) to the new tab - and not backwards. I know that when actually laying metal type in a forme leaders work from the left to the right in this kind of situation - strangely like a right tab with a ragged right edge - except that where the new tab is just 'chops off' some tail of the leader string as necessary to position the text (if any) correctly at the required tab position. This kind of thing is often used in multi-level indenting for indices or contents - tabbing beyond level 0 is accompanied by leaders extending from levl 0 to the next (to the next, etc) tab. Just my two penn'orth. Then the ragged wording of the left section would push the dots to the fixed right edge. The ragged wording of the right section would push the dots to the fixed left edge. The two sections when butted together would therefore line the dots up. I have not tried this with tabs but it may work. For example, I have created a document on my RiscPC with a referenced picture residing on that machine's main hard disc "HardDisc4". I then tried loading that document on my Iyonix (via ShareFS). The Iyonixes hard disc has a different name. Therefore, when OP tried opening the referenced file an error box pops up asking for "HardDisc4" to be inserted. Clicking on "OK" or "Cancel" just results in the same error box being displayed again. Clicking on one of the buttons then results in another error box, etc. etc. Unfortunately, the error boxes never stop, so the only way out is Alt-Break to kill OP, losing any unsaved work. The problem is that OP seems to look for the external file each time the image is meant to be displayed. Instead, it should mark the image as unavailable after the first unsuccessful attempt to open it and not try to access the file again (perhaps until being told so). The current implementation has the advantage that the user can make the file available at any time and it is then used the next time the image is displayed without requiring any user intervention. However, it is based on the assumption that checking for the existence of a file is non-obtrusive, which, unfortunately, it is not due to the system's "Insert disc xxx" mechanism. There is a way of getting the best of both alternatives: OP could try opening the file normally the first time (which allows for the case that the referenced image is on a floppy that is not currently in the disc drive). Then, during any subsequent attempts to open the file, OP should install an UpCall handler to intercept UpCall 1 and 2, which will prevent the "Insert disc xxx" dialogue box from being displayed. The system works well in OP but as Martin says there can be issues. Similar software on other platforms allows you to display a list of referenced images (linked files). When a file is updated or inaccessible the document continues to show the preview and the link list highlights the situation, with a sub-menu or buttons which allow you to update the document. On loading a document any missing link is highlighted in the same way as a missing font. This kind of system would be ideal in OP. In those other applications linked or referenced images are thee norm (and default) and consequently the facilities for handling such images are better developed compared with OP where embedded images are the norm, and referenced images were adde4d as a later feature. He mentions the problem arises when switchiong to another system where the Harddisc has another name. I had a similar problem using Organizer. When travelling I take my notebook (with VRPC) with me and of course transfer my agenda. At a certain moment this did not work; a certain file could not be found (Journal) and some other problems. Careful investigation revealed that Organizer initially saved files not to a named harddisc but as ^.B.B1.DIVERS. (DIVERS is the directory where I save the ^ files) The notebook suddenly did not recognize this name and demanded ADFS::HD4.B.B1.DIVERS. ^^^^^^^^^ If OvPro can/could reference without the need of a *named* hard disc, this might ne a possible solution to Martin's question (presuming the pictures are in the same directory as the OvPro document). A possible way around this, if it could easily and conveniently be programmed into these programs, would be using path variables instead, and setting these by the usual dragging an icon to a filer window. I'm thinking here of setting where !Printers prints to a file, for example. In the case of OvationPro, an Image$Path (or suchlike) variable could be set, and the referenced images would be stored there, or in sub-folders of that location as that would be stored with the leafname within the document. When all this is copied to another machine, such as a portable running VirtualRPC, the copy of OvPro there would then need to have its Image$Dir variable set appropriately and the program will then find the images. I bet I've missed something vital that makes this idea unworkable, but at least it might get better minds than mine thinking in more "lateral" directions and finding a better way... -- John M Ward * * RISC OS computing since 1987, A310 to Iyonix * * Fully ARMed for 17 years! -- To unsubscribe from this list, email listadmin@davidpilling.net with the words UNSUBSCRIBE softwarelist in the body of the message Mailing list provided and hosted by www.spellings.net From owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Tue Oct 5 20:56:51 2004 Received: from 127.0.0.1 by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1CEvIb-0002Lb-Eu-0002M6."pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> for <"pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> ; Tue, 5 Oct 2004 20:56:51 +0100 Return-path: Received: from punt-3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1CEvIb-0002Lb-Eu; Tue, 05 Oct 2004 19:48:38 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.72] (helo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt-3.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1CEvIb-0002Lb-Eu; Tue, 05 Oct 2004 19:48:37 +0000 Received: from [212.69.217.30] (helo=smtp-relay01.x-mailer.co.uk) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1CEvIb-0004QZ-DY; Tue, 05 Oct 2004 19:48:37 +0000 Received: from [212.69.206.29] (helo=svr1.spellings.net) by smtp-relay01.x-mailer.co.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.30) id 1CEvII-0006vW-JJ; Tue, 05 Oct 2004 20:48:18 +0100 Received: (from admin@localhost) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) id i95Jm8521719 for softwarelist-OutGoing; Tue, 5 Oct 2004 20:48:08 +0100 Received: from mta03-svc.ntlworld.com (mta03-svc.ntlworld.com [62.253.162.43]) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) with ESMTP id i95Jm8h21715 for ; Tue, 5 Oct 2004 20:48:08 +0100 Delivered-To: Received: from [127.0.0.1] ([81.99.21.189]) by mta03-svc.ntlworld.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.37 201-229-121-137-20020806) with ESMTP id <20041005194625.SCQR25095.mta03-svc.ntlworld.com@[127.0.0.1]> for ; Tue, 5 Oct 2004 20:46:25 +0100 Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2004 20:48:04 +0100 From: Colin Carnegie To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net Subject: Re: [softwarelist] Problem with OP and referenced images Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Mail-Followup-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net User-Agent: Gemini/1.45d (Qt/3.3.2) (Windows-XP) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net X-maillist: softwarelist X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-7.2 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_01,EMAIL_ATTRIBUTION,IN_REP_TO,QUOTED_EMAIL_TEXT, REFERENCES,REPLY_WITH_QUOTES,SIGNATURE_LONG_SPARSE, USER_AGENT autolearn=ham version=2.55 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.55 (1.174.2.19-2003-05-19-exp) Jhr JMAH van Vredenburch wrote: > > If OvPro can/could reference without the need of a *named* hard > disc, this might ne a possible solution to Martin's question > (presuming the pictures are in the same directory as the OvPro > document). > > JohnvV > > Please forgive me if I've completely mis-understood the issue, but surely the use of the '{filepath}.^.' macro eliminates the need for a named hard disc. And I'm feeling guilty now as after I bought your 2000 edition of the manual I said I was going to buy the Script Manual but for various personal reasons did not get round to it. Is it still available? Fair point. Just to say there are ways around some of the problems, you can reference images relative to the document (as Colin Carnegie suggested). I'd expect tricks using path variables and/or OP macros would work. Finally you can usually manage to turn off pictures (View->Options) whilst you sort out things. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. There was a problem installing them on RO 4.39 unless Agenda was viewed first. The font merge came up with 'name not recognised' for each face on first attempt, then I looked at Agenda, and they seemed to install. Messages1 in !Fonts had them all in. They worked on screen - but not for printing! I had a document in SwissB; it either printed as a blank page or in Sassoon - presumably because this is my desktop font, or because the final note in the doc was in Sassoon. If you do this on the source machine when creating the document, fine. However, unless you take any special action OvationPro stores the complete path name including the hard disc in the document. My point was about the continued error messages on the target machine that prevent you from doing anything but kill OvationPro. As David has pointed out, switching image viewing off on the target machine can do the trick - but only if you do it before loading the document. Of course, before loading the document you do not know there is a problem with it. Therefore, it is advisable not to load a document from disc if you have unsaved work - it would be lost if the loaded document has an unresolved referenced image with a differently named hard disc. Yes, I agree this is how it should happen. Unfortunately, what happens is that there is an unending sequence of "Insert disc xxx" error boxes - as soon as I click on Cancel, a new one opens, with no chance to do anything else but press Alt-Break. The OP window is not made smaller. As you know, these error boxes are displayed by the Wimp and clicking on Cancel returns a "Disc not found" error to the caller of the filing system call (OP, in this case) but somehow it seems that OP ignores this error. There is no error box displayed by OP, so I guess this is the reason why the mechanism you describe above, which is probably part of the error box display mechanism, does not kick in. No time to do anything, not even to open a menu in Well say you're loading a 100K file and it is read in 4K blocks and each block returns an error, if the error is ignored you're going to have to click on the Can button 25 times. Holding down escape produces those 25 clear error events a lot faster and with less effort. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. But it also says this for IYONIX Rom fonts - e.g. Homerton, whilst it happily loads the Latin1 chars from an older Language font with less chars and a shorter Base0 Encoding. Also !FontFiend 2.45m has the same problem. If you want to have a look inside the fonts -or IYONIX Romfonts-, you need a copy of !FontEd. Make sure, that you don't *SAVE*. This means a loss of data like kerning - just as the opening window in !FontEd will tell you. The language fonts show an order of chars as listed in the Base0 file in the ROMFonts-Encoding folder. Fonts based on this encoding 0 have the addtion '0' to Intmetric and Outlines files. >From all these chars, a small list (256) is used for each 'Alphabet' or Language or Encoding. Which subsets are supported can be seen 1) at the chars present in a FontEd window 2) the Encoding text files (e.g. Latin1, Welsh) in the ROMFonts-Encoding folder. This is different in each OS. Of course, for the latter also !XChars from martin Wuertner can be used. BTW: Language fonts came with RO 3. People with Artworks CD will find the Artworks fonts on the CD in 2 formats. By CC called RO2 and RO3 fonts. RO2 = version 6 - Outlines/Intmetrics/ Latin1 onl
