It's completely scripted and the whole thing is done in LaTeX despite containing tons of bar diagrams. They are not drawn using a drawing application but are all scripted and generated by a program called "ploticus". The whole thesis is scripted so that I could (and still can) generate an updated one whenever I have new input data. (The whole source to the thesis is open so you can take a look at the build process. You have to download a 160 MB ISO image however). Try to do this with a GUI! The problem is that people are afraid of the command line. I don't understand why. The command line is your friend, not your enemy. -- Stefan Bellon -- To unsubscribe from this list, email listadmin@davidpilling.net with the words UNSUBSCRIBE softwarelist in the body of the message Mailing list provided and hosted by www.spellings.net From owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Fri Jul 2 14:47:09 2004 Received: from 127.0.0.1 by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1BgOIE-0001Zz-Ip-0001ac."pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> for <"pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> ; Fri, 2 Jul 2004 14:47:09 +0100 Return-path: Received: from punt-3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1BgOIE-0001Zz-Ip; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 13:41:31 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.77] (helo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt-3.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1BgOIE-0001Zz-Ip; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 13:41:30 +0000 Received: from [212.69.217.32] (helo=smtp-relay03.x-mailer.co.uk) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1BgOIE-0005RM-MJ; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 13:41:30 +0000 Received: from [212.69.206.29] (helo=svr1.spellings.net) by smtp-relay03.x-mailer.co.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.30) id 1BgOHx-0003OC-D6; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 14:41:13 +0100 Received: (from admin@localhost) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) id i62Dei813752 for softwarelist-OutGoing; Fri, 2 Jul 2004 14:40:44 +0100 Received: from anchor-post-35.mail.demon.net (anchor-post-35.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.85]) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) with ESMTP id i62Deho13749 for ; Fri, 2 Jul 2004 14:40:43 +0100 Delivered-To: Received: from spcap.demon.co.uk ([62.49.28.232] helo=riscpc.local.net) by anchor-post-35.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1BgOHT-0002G8-0Z for softwarelist@davidpilling.net; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 14:40:43 +0100 Date: Thu, 1 Jul 2004 21:03:31 +0100 (BST) From: Stephen Parkin Subject: Re: [softwarelist] Re: SPrinter To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net In-Reply-To: <+5VtSZCOBG5AFw2I@pilling.demon.co.uk> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII X-Organization: Home X-Mailer: ANT RISCOS Marcel [ver 1.53] Sender: owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net X-maillist: softwarelist X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-7.2 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_01,DATE_IN_PAST_12_24,EMAIL_ATTRIBUTION,IN_REP_TO, QUOTED_EMAIL_TEXT,REPLY_WITH_QUOTES,SIGNATURE_LONG_SPARSE autolearn=ham version=2.55 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.55 (1.174.2.19-2003-05-19-exp) In on Thu 01 Jul, David Pilling wrote: > >So what you are say is, I've got to write stuff at the command line, like > >*Unsqueeze Filepath to !RunImage. > > I think it is just > > *unsqueeze !RunImage > > err, and you've got the latest unsqueeze from Freshen have you? > > -- > David Pilling A quick glance inside my !Freshen.Library reveals 'squeeze' and 'xpand' xpand successfully decompresses !Sprinter.!RunImage for me. One of the most important aspects of a command-line, or script-based method is that later on you can see how some effect was achieved - and what's more if there's any complexity the script approach allows you to leave comments explaining what you did & why. Whereas, in a document produced via a GUI there's no way to tell how something was done - you just see the overall result. When something is scripted it is also easy to take copies of it and tweak the script to do something subtly different. -- Jeremy C B Nicoll - my opinions are my own. -- To unsubscribe from this list, email listadmin@davidpilling.net with the words UNSUBSCRIBE softwarelist in the body of the message Mailing list provided and hosted by www.spellings.net From owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Fri Jul 2 22:37:31 2004 Received: from 127.0.0.1 by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1BgVeX-0001pK-7j-0001pe."pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> for <"pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> ; Fri, 2 Jul 2004 22:37:31 +0100 Return-path: Received: from punt-3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1BgVeX-0001pK-7j; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 21:33:02 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.210] (helo=lon1-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt-3.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1BgVeX-0001pK-7j; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 21:33:01 +0000 Received: from [212.69.217.32] (helo=smtp-relay03.x-mailer.co.uk) by lon1-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1BgVeX-0002HG-7B; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 21:33:01 +0000 Received: from [212.69.206.29] (helo=svr1.spellings.net) by smtp-relay03.x-mailer.co.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.30) id 1BgVeE-0002Ht-QR; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 22:32:42 +0100 Received: (from admin@localhost) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) id i62LWMK24598 for softwarelist-OutGoing; Fri, 2 Jul 2004 22:32:22 +0100 Received: from anchor-post-34.mail.demon.net (anchor-post-34.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.92]) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) with ESMTP id i62LWLL24588 for ; Fri, 2 Jul 2004 22:32:21 +0100 Delivered-To: Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([62.49.20.172]) by anchor-post-34.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1BgVds-000Eos-0Y for softwarelist@davidpilling.net; Fri, 02 Jul 2004 22:32:20 +0100 Message-ID: Date: Fri, 2 Jul 2004 22:30:50 +0100 To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net From: David Pilling Subject: Re: [softwarelist] Re: SPrinter References: <4cc5418722dfs@ukgateway.net> <8abf82c54c.martin@bach.mw-software.com> <4cc7583366dfs@ukgateway.net> <4cc7828fa9dfs@ukgateway.net> <4cc7cc3920dfs@ukgateway.net> <4cc7e5efabsbellon@sbellon.de> <4cc8056a9cdfs@ukgateway.net> <4cc80cd92asbellon@sbellon.de> <4cc82bd8ebJeremy@omba.demon.co.uk> In-Reply-To: <4cc82bd8ebJeremy@omba.demon.co.uk> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=us-ascii;format=flowed User-Agent: Turnpike/6.02-S (<4T+r1rR+bkVQqNpwE9H6P2XkEQ>) Sender: owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net X-maillist: softwarelist X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-5.8 required=5.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_01,IN_REP_TO,REFERENCES,SIGNATURE_LONG_SPARSE, USER_AGENT version=2.55 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.55 (1.174.2.19-2003-05-19-exp) >I agree with Stefan. The area is a little too small for me. Does anyone else find this has a slow-down effect on their work in OP? Could you increase the size of it? Say, if a toolbar icon is partially hidden, start a scroll when the pointer arrives on that icon. I guess that means increase that 'scrollable area' to almost the full width of an icon. Without moving the array from the left-hand side of the screen or changing the size of the icons, what steps can you take to decrease the time necessary to access the average tool? and (OT) an interesting one considering RO's context-sensitive menus 3. There are two possible fixes, either new filters or a new Ovation Pro. As it happens both are now available. The trivial cause was switching over to .aff as the preferred extension for Acorn Draw files on Windows. There are too many other programs that produce .drw files. Think of AFF as Acorn draw File Format. The new filter pack has in addition various bug fixes and enhancements. Filters are supplied for TIFF, GIF, PCX and PNG graphics files, and for Impression DDF (.ddf) and Impression document files (.imp). Unless you want to use these filters there's nothing new about the Ovation Pro. The above are available from; http://www.davidpilling.net/ovationpro/opw.html Note that the name of the Ovation Pro for Windows installer has changed, it is now ovnproi.exe, an extra 'i'. That is to prevent clashes with the name of the main Ovation Pro executable. Somewhat shamefacedly I also have to report that you can now buy a registration code for Ovation Pro from the above web page. Signing up for this gives you a code that unlocks the time out on Windows copies of Ovation Pro. One fine day when I complete the program you'll also get a CD. The reason for taking this decision, is that there are things which I either don't want to just give away or can't. But on the other hand I don't want to wait months longer before making them available. Delay is likely to encourage people to find their own solutions. The first thing that registration gets you access to is the former Beebug, Desktop Thesaurus. Again it is on the above web page. To use it you will need the latest (July) version of Ovation Pro for Windows. Other resources that require registration will follow. However free access to the main Ovation Pro program will continue. So you can carry on as before and I'd be perfectly happy if you did. The windows file extension site :- http://www.icdatamaster.com/ lists .aff as a ispell affixes definition file. Probably not too likely to clash. Interestingly though it lists .draw as "Acorn's object-based format : Vector graphics" http://filext.com/ also lists .draw, but doesn't really give a use for .aff Xara uses both .drw and .aff for draw files so I guess you have gone the right way. I wonder where the .draw extension has come from and what software uses it. Maybe you should "register" .aff with one or both of the above sites. I don't know how official they are, but they come quite high when googling for file extensions. > Somewhat shamefacedly I also have to report that you can now buy a > registration code for Ovation Pro from the above web page. Just duck as you get all the brickbats about the price being "Too high for us long suffering Acorn users" or "Too low for such an amazing piece of software" ;-) - looks about right to me and I will order my copy in the fullness of time. Hmm. when I looked into it, it seemed every vector drawing program used .drw. It's interesting to me that there is not more upset over extensions, given there appears to be no central authority. I've never head of anyone suing over someone else using their extension. Surely there must have been clashes over the years. >Just duck as you get all the brickbats about the price being >"Too high for us long suffering Acorn users" or "Too low for >such an amazing piece of software" ;-) - Yes, well, that announcement means the price is fixed, and on past form I'll be sticking with it. Had the program been finished a year or two back it would have been lower. In passing, I've emailed out all orders received. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Box 22 Thornton Cleveleys Blackpool.
