When editing a text, if I use F4 to bring up the Search and Replace window, and enter the string searched for in the writable icon, and then hit Return, nothing happens. The "Go" button is surrounded by a yellow highlighted border, and I am told this means that it shows the action to follow if you hit Return. Is there a mistake here, or what? You are correct! My situation was one where I was wanting to use ONLY the Find facility, and not the Replace. I have just tested the Find+Replace facility and it does work perfectly. It would be an improvement if the logic were re-written a bit, so that you could tick a button to grey out the Replace icon, and at that point the Go button would get a yellow highlight, ready to operate when you hit Return. Do you get what I mean? There are probably several ways it could be re-arranged. It is a dialogue that serves several purposes, and Search by itself is quite an important part of its job. Anyway, thanks for explaining. Using 'menu->picture->process...' lets me edit the gamma curve (is that what it's called? The line that can be adjusted to give a different spread of colour/brightness intensity). I've just got a new digital camera that takes much higher resolution photos (still JPEG, though). Now, as soon as I try and edit that curve, it says 'not enough memory' and shrinks to a title-bar in the top left of the screen. The main difference between files from the old camera and from the new is size - the old ones (which work!) were around a quarter of a Mb in size, the new ones (which don't work) are around 3Mb! I've stripped out the EXIF info and run them through !JClean, but still they won't 'modify'. Viewing and printing the page - even with four such photos on a single Ovation page - are both fine, provided they remain unmodified. Could it be anything to do with 'wimpslot'? I've tried increasing the wimpslot as defined in OvPro's !Run file, but it doesn't seem to make any difference - or I haven't increased it enough! Not that I know exactly what that does, anyway! We have a Canon 10D, which also produces 3MB JPEGS (about 3000x2000 pixels). If you convert these to sprites, they are 24MB each. If OPro needs to keep these in application-slot memory for editing purposes, you're going to run out very fast.... the app slot is limited to 26MB on pre-RO 5 machines. > I've stripped out the EXIF info and run them through !JClean, but still > they won't 'modify'. Viewing and printing the page - even with four > such photos on a single Ovation page - are both fine, provided they > remain unmodified. I imagine images are kept in JPEG format if you just put them on a page, but need to be decoded for image processing purposes. This might explain why you can view and print them, but have problems editing. Not sure if this is the problem, though. It depends on how the program uses memory. > Could it be anything to do with 'wimpslot'? I've just tried increasing the Wimpslot in the !Run file to just over 25Mb and, amazingly, it works! But only with one JPEG. If I load a second onto the page and try to modify that as well, then it gives up again! I assume, then, it converts each JPEG to a sprite to perform this modification. Hmmm ... that's a nuisance (to put it politely)! Still, at least I can now modify them if there's only one on a page. Time to get myself an Iyonix, I think. Looks like RISC OS 4 is getting very outdated now! Thanks for your help! Only if you confirm such specific action in the following window that appears after having hit twice. I understood Robin Phillips' question as "finding a certain string" while editing. His question, I believe, did not concern 'replacing'. PipeDream acts as Robin Phillips stated in his original question. But, the searched string having been found, the 'Search' window closes and you must start anew unless you have ticked the 'Replace' box (even without entering any replace string). I believe OvPro's handling is far superior. Crop the area of the picture to the required size and reduce the dpi of the picture to around 150. That is plenty of resolution even for imagesetters and you will get better printouts from laser or inkjets anything over 150 dpi is a waste of resources. My machine doesn't cope with the inadequacies of Photodesk particularly well. It is a bit faster than was my Kinetic RiscPC, but then there are these crashes to deal with that everyone else is talking about. Apparently, these are to be laid at the door of Photodesk, rather than Iyonix, but what consolation is that? In addition, my Iyonix frequently disobeys its various switches that are supposed to turn it on, it keeps (falsely) complaining that it had no keyboard connected, and I have yet to be supplied (at third time of asking) with a mouse that works with it. Castle seem to feel unsurprised and not much bothered. Hmmm. Far be it for me to question the reliability of your particular machine, but Photodesk is my most used application (after Zap). I have it virtually permanently running here and it's never once crashed on my Iyonix. What are you doing at the time it starts crashing? And what are these crashes everyone else is talking about. The Iyonix is the most reliable computer I've ever used, even more so than my trusty RPC. > In addition, my Iyonix frequently disobeys its various switches that are > supposed to turn it on, it keeps (falsely) complaining that it had no > keyboard connected, and I have yet to be supplied (at third time of > asking) with a mouse that works with it. His question, I believe, did not concern 'replacing'. PipeDream acts as Robin Phillips stated in his original question. But, the searched string having been found, the 'Search' window closes and you must start anew unless you have ticked the 'Replace' box (even without entering any replace string).
