Looking at the big things, which are added in this new version. > For some people this version should do everything the RISC OS one > does. Speaking about this new version, definetely YES. So ... thanks David! I guess, release date will be much closer now. Maybe we -users of the Windows version- can do something in return? I guess, you will be served with as many error reports as we (users) can produce. Many users, who use OPW, are all 'testers' -as long as they report 'things, which don't seem OK'. Giving David the opportunity to fix as much as can be fixed. So, at least I'll take the trouble to report from now on. I hope many others will do the same. Maybe many others already did. > The big things that are now right are > > dashes and arrow heads on lines - I've recreated the Acorn draw module > > printing formats - like scaling, print position, sideways I am more than pleased that the different printing formats -with scaling- are available now. Together with the BIG things, which were already present from previous versions, like; The so-easy-to-use Applet manager in Applets. I surely hope that third party Applets will follow soon. My favourites are 'NewFrame' and 'Searc-and-Replace-with-Styles'. And the Font manager in Misc. Now extended with the 'PostScript' Section, in which you can make sure that RISC OS fonts mapped to their TrueType equivalent for display use their PostScript equivalent for printing. E.g. Homerton in RISC OS - Helvetica in PS print = Homerton map (to e.g. Arial) in Windows - Helvetica in PS print. > So as long as you don't use PostScript what else is there? > > Direct PostScript generation now works, but it is generic PS, and it > won't do everything at less than level 3 - there is more work to do > here. I guess you are speaking here of "Choices - Print Choices " turning on the option: "Direct PostScript Output". Of course, I can't tell now, what doesn't work. What does work nicely is getting Type1s in files for fonts and fontmaps which aren't defined in an active FontManager-->PostScript, instead of embedded TryeTypes. Did anything >come of this? Yes, it's been on the web site for yonks. See www.davidpilling.net/ovationpro/opw.html (example windows applet at the bottom) There is an example of the calculator applet, which includes a program that converts an Acorn template file into a Windows .rc file. If you go that way you need something like MS Visual C++ that can compile a .rc file into a DLL. Plan B, which came after the above, is that there is a freeware program called ResHacker that will let you edit the resources in a .exe file. The point being you could take an existing applet, and change everything in the resources to produce a new one - no coding involved. The problem here is that unlike RISC OS, windows templates have to be compiled - applets can still be written in the script language, it's just the templates (and optionally other resources like sprites) that need to be in code. The calculator applet is different from most in that everything is in a .dll, but if you look at other applets supplied the other format of separate files also works. As we near the end (or maybe it's the beginning) of this project, I'm aware that something has to be done about third party applets. I've taken the liberty of converting some. I'd probably do more in time. Naturally I'd prefer the authors to continue with Windows versions of them. Perhaps there are some who don't want their applet to be available for Windows. Point being feel free to let me know what you want to do. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. I've just tried going down the MS Visual C++ route - generated a .rc file made a workspace/project etc. that looks close to the calcs example and had a quick look at the .rc file in the editor. It doesn't look quite the same as the RiscOS version ;-). The buttons need tweaking to make them 3D, but they also seem to have a lot of text in of the form R2;f17 (which was probably RiscOS formatting stuff) is this still needed? Also some of the buttons had sprite files associated with them. Can these still be linked in? On the plus side - it does compile and produce a dll, but I haven't tried doing anything with it yet. The calcs example has the script file as a .b24 file whereas all the installed applets have .csc Trying to install via the applet manager, it is looking for a .oap file. None of the applets seem to have one of these, so I'm not sure what I need for this. The tick boxes all appear to work, even to the point of opening the extra bit of window to show the wildcards. The dropdown menu icons seem to work, but none of the "Find", "Stop", "Next" etc. buttons seem to do anything. I guess this will all be much clearer when the full documantation becomes available ;-) Another thing, the readme in calcs talks about applets in folders and applets contained in a dll. It says calcs is all in the dll, but it is not obvious how to build the different types. > > >So, I've just taken the raw .rc output of Temp.exe and built a .dll and > >installed it. All your mailling list accept rules should be ahead of whatever rules you have that look for spam. The general rule is to accept known-to-be-ok stuff then test the rest. If you put everything in it, you get something like calcs - an applet that is just a single .dll file. If you put less in then the situation is more like a RISC OS applet - a folder with other folders in it, Autorun, Library etc. >Does the scripting support the fx commands? I had to use fx 138 to get >button presses to add characters to the input icons. I suspect this >doesn't work now either. No, fx now does nothing. I've emulated a lot of RISC OS, so bbc_vdu(7) goes "beep", but not OS_Byte. It is a good point, I know I've used fx 138 occasionally. >> If you want me to look at it... >Which bits do you want? The Win project + applet. Err if you like, it might be easier for me to grab the RISC OS applet and convert it. >for windows, so I could well have the settings wrong. I just created an >empty dll project and added the .rc file and copies of the module stuff >from calcs. Um. I would have been inclined to take the calcs project and set off from that. Setting off from scratch you do need to know what you're doing - e.g. no MFC support, even for .rc files there are some horribly subtle things. For example your windows need to be of class 'task' - ISTR by default you won't get the chance to specify a class. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Interesting exercise, clearly there needs to be more documentation. The template conversion program was only happy with validation strings like the ones I use, so the F17's and so on upset it. I've now updated it to handle those. Alas you've got to think like Windows - Windows doesn't like icons on top of one another - so I had to slightly change the design. In Windows button #1 is OK and button #2 is Cancel - I've not changed that but it needs changing. A tab order will have to be sorted out. I've got to investigate why some icons are not shading. I have actually been looking at the draft version 1.1 of the W3C xsl-fo Recommendation. This looks very much as though it is (in a defferent notation) well over 90% of what DDL does - providing, perhaps one uses a program to generate the mark-up - or, as has been suggested to me, store styles in CSS2/3 form in a (OPro??) document and expand when read into property attributes. This would eventually mean that by writing documents out in xsl-fo, they could be 'printed' by something like fop (an Apache project). Some further thought is needed, however, in relation to 'generated content' - eg bullets, list markers, etc. Ketih -- City Desk Waikato University [PGP key available if desired] -- To unsubscribe from this list, email listadmin@davidpilling.net with the words UNSUBSCRIBE softwarelist in the body of the message Mailing list provided and hosted by www.spellings.net From owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Tue Apr 6 16:48:47 2004 Received: from 127.0.0.1 by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1B9zo6-00029x-Sd-0002Af."pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> for <"pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> ; Tue, 6 Apr 2004 16:48:47 +0100 Return-path: Received: from punt-3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1B9zo6-00029x-Sd; Sun, 04 Apr 2004 05:04:32 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.72] (helo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt-3.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1B9zo6-00029x-Sd; Sun, 04 Apr 2004 05:04:30 +0000 Received: from [212.69.217.30] (helo=smtp-relay01.x-mailer.co.uk) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1B9zo6-0000pi-Mb; Sun, 04 Apr 2004 05:04:30 +0000 Received: from [212.69.206.29] (helo=svr1.spellings.net) by smtp-relay01.x-mailer.co.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.30) id 1B9zo1-0007W7-8c; Sun, 04 Apr 2004 06:04:25 +0100 Received: (from admin@localhost) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) id i3454AL30878 for softwarelist-OutGoing; Sun, 4 Apr 2004 06:04:10 +0100 Received: from queue4-svc.ntlworld.com (queue4-win.server.ntlworld.com [62.253.162.224]) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) with ESMTP id i34549v30874 for ; Sun, 4 Apr 2004 06:04:09 +0100 Delivered-To: Received: from linux.at.home ([81.96.72.154]) by mta08-svc.ntlworld.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.37 201-229-121-137-20020806) with ESMTP id <20040401130629.BFHG5004.mta08-svc.ntlworld.com@linux.at.home> for ; Thu, 1 Apr 2004 14:06:29 +0100 Date: Thu, 1 Apr 2004 14:06:24 +0100 From: John Pettigrew To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net Subject: Re: [softwarelist] Ovation Pro 2.74 Windows Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: <77fa9a944c.polak@nararch.nlr.nl> Mail-Followup-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net X-Organization: XL Cambridge User-Agent: Gemini/1.34g (Qt/3.1.1) (Linux-i686) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="378706336--1614002949--354611135"; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature" Sender: owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net X-maillist: softwarelist X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-5.8 required=5.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_01,EMAIL_ATTRIBUTION,IN_REP_TO,REFERENCES, REPLY_WITH_QUOTES,USER_AGENT autolearn=ham version=2.55 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.55 (1.174.2.19-2003-05-19-exp) --378706336--1614002949--354611135 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable In a previous message, David Pilling wrote: > > http://www.davidpilling.com/ovationpro/opw.html >=20 > Try >=20 > http://pilling.users.netlink.co.uk/ovationpro/opw.html >=20 > I suspect we have a hosting snag here...
