It is just the case that RISC OS (before version 5) has no operating system support for clipping and implementing it in an application is a bit tricky so the RiScript authors did not do it. > [snip] > > > Of course, if you use RiScript to produce the PDF you will most certainly > > > run into RiScript's clipping problems. It would be trivial to retain the clipping and put it in the generated PDF file. Whether you go through a Draw file or not does not make any difference because it would be no problem to put the clipping information in the intermediate Draw file. Converting the clipping from PS to PDF is really easy. When I have edited a table and returned it to OPro and then try to print I get an error message after the printer window disappears that complains that printer cannot handle VDU4. I have found that by using ALT/BRK rather than any of the buttons in the error window the program offered for stopping is TableMate. When I stop this the printing then starts. Use of any of the error window buttons eventually results in a type 5 error on OPro. At the moment you would clear the text in the spell check and hit return - as you say you pick up an extra space. Impression does not spot repeated words and does not give you the chance to delete words from the spell check. Please, Michael, Can you inform me (us) as soon as you have found the culprit? I've done a reset too, but without success. So, it must be something that was loaded up during my boot. Of course I've tried a clean boot (whilst holding down Shift), but then printing appears to be difficult, as !Printers assumes a Choices path to be active. After some blind and wild clicking here and there, my desktop suddenly appeared again, and I could really print the draw file from Ovation. It hasn't given me a clue, however, which part of the normal boot has been skipped that way. But if I discover something first, I'll let you (all) know. I wanted to print on both sides so selected reverse and right and it printed as I expected the last page first and the previous chapters OK. I then inserted the pages that had been printed in the printer and then selected it to print the reverse and left and the first four pages were blank, they should not have been, and then a few others OK and but they were not in sequence so ended up doing each page that was missed and redoing some that had the wrong page number to match the reverse. I am compiling a booklet from my wifes writings by creating a new document and inserting new chapters for each section and then loading each one by dragging the pages from another into the new chapter. I get an error message 'Ovation Pro has suffered an internal error type=3 and must quit' The stage it fails is after creating the new chapter and having loading the file to be copied across, in another OP window, and clicking on the select all icon. By selecting the text using the mouse and then the copy to clipboard and using insert in the new document it works OK. So the failure is only associated with the select all icon. Also could someone indicate how to modify an existing chapter to be based on another/previous, it can be done on when creating a new one but not an existing as the area is greyed out. My modem is a Jetway 56000. I have downloaded the v.1.19 upgrade and created a new directory for it, and downloaded the Class IVJ driver and put it in the ArcFax.Driver new directory. I cannot reliably get ArcFax to load on the Icon bar: usually double clicking on it freezes the machine, forcing a reboot. Sometimes however it does load, but the icon is greyed. Sometimes I can load the previous 1.10 version. 9 times out of 10 it fails to load and hangs the machine. I have tried quitting all other modem-using programs (DialUp, MessengerPro and Oregano) but this makes no difference. I have checked that the modem is switched on. My modem is set currently to a speed of 115200 (other choices are 57600 and 19200) The modem interface is set to InternalPC, port 0. Any idea what the problem is? Roger is correct. I'm still using 2.67 so have not noticed this but OPro2.70 seems to have a problem with printing jpegs. It is not embedding the jpegs in the PostScript output, but printing them through the PS PrintDriver as a sprites - resulting in much bigger files. David, it seems that OPro 2.70 is treating the jpeg as a sprite within the document. This can be seen in a 256 colour mode as the pictured is not being dithered the same as it is in 2.67. I'm very surprised no one has seen this before now. I wonder if this is related to the problems I've previously discussed with you, when a jpeg is processed (and then prints as a sprite) but is NOT turned back into a jpeg when the Process Default button is clicked. The way things work is that OP sees if it can render JPEG's whole - by calling various SWI's and seeing if it gets an error (does this version of RISC OS support transformed JPEG rendering). If RISC OS can't handle the JPEG then it is rendered to a sprite and the sprite is rendered. This rendering via sprite is also used if image processing is in effect on the image. >I wonder if this is related to the problems I've previously discussed >with you, when a jpeg is processed (and then prints as a sprite) but is >NOT turned back into a jpeg when the Process Default button is clicked. Problem is that there is no way to turn off image processing. Once you've used it, it is on, and the JPEG will always be rendered via sprite. Making a change to the code which does not change the meaning, results in a program that works correctly. I wonder Roger if you are actually printing documents with JPEG's in? The example PS output you sent seems to show one version of the program using PS clipping and (perhaps) the other one rendering via a masked sprite. So all a bit of a mess. I'm sorry about this, and I'll get a 2.71 out asap. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Box 22 Thornton Cleveleys Blackpool. I thought I was > > losing it! > It doesn't happen, when the JPEGs are in a DrawFile in a picture > frame. It does here. When printing to PostScript, OPro 2.70 is printing JPEGs as Sprites through the PS printer driver even when the JPEG is embedded in a Drawfile. Where as 2.67 includes the JPEG directly in the PostScript output (as it should) when printing the same document. But as Martin pointed out: > Until then, a workaround to print a JPEG to PostScript from > OvationPro is to put it in an ArtWorks file and drop the ArtWorks > file into OP. This allows the AWRender module to handle the printing > of the JPEG. This requires ArtWorks with the JPEGObject module > (standard in ArtWorks 2) and AWRender 1.37 or higher, which most > people should have installed by now. ...works correctly. Although anyone who may be preparing documents for colour work, where the document is to be printed as separations, should be aware that the AWRender module wont colour separate the JPEGs in ArtWorks files, even though OPro will colour separate JPEGs when included directly in an OPro frame or embedded in a Drawfile. For most people this isn't particularly relevant. Where it matters a great deal is when printing the document to a Colour PostScript device to create a colour proof, then printing the same document as separations to a monochrome device (such as an imagesetter) to get the individual plate images. The result is: for JPEGs in ArtWorks files the full JPEG is included on each plate separation, including any spot colour plates. It's good to see a familiar friend appear on the windows screen! However, after a while I discovered that the machine was rather unresponsive. I checked the task manager and found that a process called ovnpro.exe was hogging 98% of cpu time. I quit Ovation Pro but the process still remained active in the task manager list. I stopped the process from within task manager and restarted Ovation Pro. The ovnpro.exe process restarted but now with a low cpu usage - in other words, when I restarted, things seemed OK. Any idea what might be happening here? I haven't been able to reproduce the problem yet, but obviously, the thought of having a rogue process taking over the machine is a bit worrying. Yes, this is an unfortunate omission for the time being. I think I will correct this soon - first in ArtWorks 2 itself, then in AWRender. Of course, as soon as you want separations, each JPEG will always have to be printed as a sprite rather than a JPEG so the expanded bitmap ends up in the PostScript stream, so this discussion about getting small PostScript files is only relevant for composite colour printing. This allows the AWRender module to handle the printing of the JPEG. This requires ArtWorks with the JPEGObject module (standard in ArtWorks 2) and AWRender 1.37 or higher, which most people should have installed by now. I thought I was > losing it! It doesn't happen, when the JPEGs are in a DrawFile in a picture frame. Past week I made an one-page OP doc with 56 small sprite-files (6MB), containing a DrawFile with about the same size. I changed the sprites to JPEG and the resulting OP page is (in Windows and RISC OS) 557 KB. I hit another problem. The idea was to put all these small pictures in the same 'irregular' frame. I installed the newframe applet and used a little drawfile: 1.54 KB I created the frame: saved OPdoc: 14.7K Made 8 copies /duplicates: this took a long time: saved doc *3,593* KB, that is almost 4MB for 8 empty frames ... Next I saved both as DDL: the doc with 1 empty frame: 6.24 KB, the doc with 8 empty frames: 26 KB I skipped the idea and put it all on a drawfile, in which I filled the frames with JPEG's. Fortunately, the small size of the JPEG's in the DrawFile inside Ovation Pro was preserved. When I had these 56 bitmaps in OP -without the planned frames- I had a file of over 20 MB. The .pdf was about 850 KB (300 dpi setting and bigger bitmaps, but clipped). Resulting pdf's: less than 200 KB in Acrobat, about 450 KB in !RiScript Pro. With these two simple 'things': small JPEGS and irregular frames, it is very easy to create even one-page 'huge' documents ... :-) Tonnie -- Mrs Tonnie Demarteau - the Netherlands -- To unsubscribe from this list, email listadmin@davidpilling.net with the words UNSUBSCRIBE softwarelist in the body of the message Mailing list provided and hosted by www.spellings.net From owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Tue Jul 15 22:23:20 2003 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <"pilling.1058175660:10:00353:170".pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Tue, 15 Jul 2003 22:23:20 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1058175660:10:00353:170; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 09:41:00 GMT Received: from smtp-relay02.x-mailer.co.uk ([212.69.217.31]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id ab1104161; 14 Jul 2003 9:40 GMT Received: from [212.69.206.29] (helo=svr1.spellings.net) by smtp-relay02.x-mailer.co.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.12) id 19bznP-00070F-00; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 10:38:59 +0100 Received: (from admin@localhost) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) id h6E9cPj12614 for softwarelist-OutGoing; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 10:38:25 +0100 Received: from mk-smarthost-3.mail.uk.tiscali.com (mk-smarthost-3.mail.uk.tiscali.com [212.74.114.39]) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) with ESMTP id h6E9cNf12589 for ; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 10:38:23 +0100 Delivered-To: Received: from [80.225.220.54] (helo=acld75.ukgateway.net) by mk-smarthost-3.mail.uk.tiscali.com with smtp (Exim 4.14) id 19bzmi-0003a2-2a for softwarelist@davidpilling.net; Mon, 14 Jul 2003 10:38:16 +0100 Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2003 10:37:26 +0100 From: george To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net Subject: Re: [softwarelist] ArcFax problem Message-ID: References: <1MerppE0jyD$Ewa+@pilling.demon.co.uk> In-Reply-To: <1MerppE0jyD$Ewa+@pilling.demon.co.uk> X-Organization: home User-Agent: Messenger-Pro/2.50a (MsgServe/1.50) (RISC-OS/4.03) POPstar/2.03 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net X-maillist: softwarelist In message <1MerppE0jyD$Ewa+@pilling.demon.co.uk> you wrote: [snipped] downloaded the Class IVJ > >driver and put it in the ArcFax.Driver new directory. > > ... and chosen it as the current modem driver from ArcFax choices? Quite right: it's v.1.16, and it works! I put the Class IVJ driver in its driver directory and selected it using the ArcFax-Configure-Modem dialogue. It will now install on the icon bar and I can Adjust-click to select/deselect it. Has 1.19 got Select-specific updates BTW? It definitely doesn't work with ROS 4.03 (at least on my machine). This morning I have been trying out DplgScan and Photodesk (the 32-bit version). I have been using the images on the Photodesk Digisnaps CD - all TIFF files. DplngScan handles some of them with no problem. However, when loading a large percentage of them it comes up with the error message - 'unrecoverable error in run-time system; free failed (heap overwritten) sometimes twice before disappearing off the icon bar. The image Underwater.reef/tif presents this problem - but the image Places.missio/tif does not - to give two concrete examples. Has anyone else come across this? Is it a configuration problem? Any help most gratefully received.
