I'm relatively new to Ovation Pro, and only bought it a couple of months ago. This is my maiden posting. The learning curve was not too steep. I had moments of despair when things didn't appear to go as easily as Impy Publisher, and of joy when things worked really easily. The main thing I missed was tables not being translated correctly by the RTF loader. I get a lot of text with tables. So I lost no time downloading the latest version, hoping that this would be fixed at long last. Since I upgraded, my Ovation conks out when I load any text, place the cursor anywhere, and press . I was given RO3.7 plus StrongArm recently by a friend who'd upgraded. The StrongArm caused problems, so I put the old processor back again. I cannot see why this would matter, though. Is anyone familiar with this problem? A second point: Is there a manual anywhere I can download? I mean, more recent than the one on the 2000 CD? There's everyone from the amateur tinkerer (like me) to the professional publisher. First question is have you tried OvP loaded with *no* applets at all, and just a limited set of Transloaders active. TransRTF, TransDDF and TransIMP should do. Make sure you're running with the latest versions. !Info inside the Transloader will give the details. -- Steve Pampling -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Tue May 21 21:51:49 2002 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <"pilling.1021828505:10:12692:72".pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Tue, 21 May 2002 21:51:49 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1021828505:10:12692:72; Sun, 19 May 2002 17:15:05 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id aa1012706; 19 May 2002 17:14 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) id g4JHMHK25375 for ovationpro-list; Sun, 19 May 2002 18:22:17 +0100 Received: from hetnet.nl (net047s.hetnet.nl [194.151.104.151]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) with ESMTP id g4JHMEi25372 for ; Sun, 19 May 2002 18:22:14 +0100 Received: from sinnema.hetnet.nl ([62.100.17.164]) by hetnet.nl with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.5.1877.757.75); Sun, 19 May 2002 19:11:20 +0200 Message-Id: <4.3.2.7.2.20020519185256.00abe2d0@pop.hetnet.nl> X-Sender: knjillis@pop.hetnet.nl X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 4.3.2 Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 19:09:04 +0200 To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk From: "C. Image has been squashed: OPro quits with either Type=5 or "Abort on ..." (same image, different versions of the document). Only solution was to guess which image was the problem, find it, and unsquash it. Fortunately there was only one. This month we want an A4 landscape page for the centre spread because it takes a full-spread picture. The text flows from page 9 to page 12 with 10 and 11 blank for the photo (so I cannot use a different chapters!). I have just put empty frames over the Master frames on pages 10 and 11 and made a new document for the centre spread. This will be OK (I hope) for photocopying as I can supply pamphlet print-out and substitute the sheet from the second document for the otherwise blank pages 10-11. I say I Hope because the printers prefer A4 originals which they reduce on the copier to the A5 pages - they have worked with printers pairs from pamphlet print in the past. But how can I make a single composite PDF to put on the web? (My usual routine is print Postscript to file (set to A5 portrait paper size) and use !ps2pdf as a front-end to Ghostscript. I'm thinking in terms of possibly using Galley print, splicing in the postscript for the centre spread before converting to PDF. I'll probably need to define a paper size which doesn't rotate the output for A4 landscape - or may I be able to hack the postscript to sort that out? Suggestions please. I've also posted this to the ghostscript list. Its got to work this way because sometimes when you click on print, the printer will be busy and the document will be queued (i.e. saved for later printing). -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. When you use the PostScript printer menu option "Append to file" in "Connections" and save the icon for the output file to disc, you can combine many different formats from many different sources in ONE PostScript file and distill a pdf from this PostScript file. As far as I have seen, only Publisher always wants to start a new PostScript file. Makes sure "Append to file" is already ON for the first print (that is, when you save the output file to disc). So in your case you can print page 1-9 from OP in A5 portrait, 10-11 as a landscape A4 from <...>, print 12 .. again from OP. mrs Tonnie Demarteau - the Netherlands -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Wed May 29 14:55:19 2002 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <"pilling.1022663440:10:14355:57".pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Wed, 29 May 2002 14:55:19 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1022663440:10:14355:57; Wed, 29 May 2002 09:10:40 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id ab1125621; 29 May 2002 9:10 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) id g4T9CUm27807 for ovationpro-list; Wed, 29 May 2002 10:12:30 +0100 Received: from host1.kbnet.co.uk (host1.kbnet.co.uk [194.168.148.2]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) with ESMTP id g4T9CRi27803 for ; Wed, 29 May 2002 10:12:27 +0100 Received: from kbnet.co.uk (host213-1-14-115.webport.bt.net [213.1.14.115]) by host1.kbnet.co.uk (8.11.6/8.11.6) with SMTP id g4T9wdV19307 for ; Wed, 29 May 2002 09:58:40 GMT Date: Wed, 29 May 2002 09:59:58 +0100 From: Mike Williams To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: mixed page sizes Message-ID: <9a01253e4b.akalat@akalat.kbnet.co.uk> References: In-Reply-To: X-Organization: Akalat Publishing User-Agent: Messenger-Pro/2.50a (MsgServe/1.50) (RISC-OS/3.60) POPstar/2.03 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro In message you wrote: > Our monthly church magazine is A5 portrait, produced in OPro. > > This month we want an A4 landscape page for the centre spread because it > takes a full-spread picture. Oh. That's the first time I've heard such a suggestion. You seem to say EPS is OK and sprite is worse and JPEG is worse still. One could interpret that as the printer being better at scaling postscript than bitmaps. The argument against that is that RISC OS probably sticks the whole bitmap in the output PS file and lets the printer scale it anyway. Closer to home, I guess an EPS file is not subject to certain parts of OP e.g. the image processing facilities. I guess you might try printing the same images from Draw as a test to see where the problem is. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. And does that matter? Yes, including embedded fonts for each print job - the PS output file was about 1Mb bigger for the 3-part print job compared with the one I hacked together (9Mb compared with 8Mb including jpegs). Doesn't seem to matter as the PDF is only 518Kb, and from the appended print file does what I want. The version I hacked together created a 10 page pdf instead of 21 pages - only the first part was included. I had thought this wasn't working as viewing the PS file with !Gview and Ghostscript displayed all pages at A5, cropping the one which should be A4 in the middle. The PDF is exactly as I wanted - many thanks for the suggestion Tonnie. > If it doesn't then the same effect can presumably be got simply by > writing to separate files then concatenating them? Probably, even the Ctrl-D at the end of each input file was included. I'll be putting the PDF on the website later tonight (http://www.tinshill.f9.co.uk/mag.htm follow the link to 200.pdf if you're interested). Mike Williams' suggestion is, of course, required if the picture is to span 2 pages not in the centre spread and to be printed (or photocopied). Thanks for the suggestion Mike. I also tried printing Galley, but the blank half-sheets for covers and first & last pages are less satisfactory. I downloaded your file, loaded into Opro 2.67 (warning about 4 missing fonts - OSymbolic.FFDingbest... - everything displays in Homerton and Trinity) and printed A4 Normal to file with Printers 1.64a (Kyocera PostScript Printer Definition File) no problem, made a pdf with Ghostscript and ps2pdf again no problem. Do these 2 pages use fonts which are used elsewhere in the document and print to file OK? If not I'd suspect the fonts are causing the problem. Not really a lot of help, but your file both printed to PS and converted to .PDF (using ps2pdf). I would send you the .PDF file, but as I don't have all the fonts in the document it's probably not useful. The missing fonts substituted by OPro here are the Symbolic.FFDingbest and Sans.Eurostile families. Fonts are the most likely problem. Check that all fonts used have all their IntMetrics and Outlines files correctly named and correctly filetyped. Even then some poorly defined fonts will cause the problems described when the PostScript driver attempts to convert RISC OS fonts to Adobe Type 3 fonts. Also, make sure that you check any fonts embedded in Draw or ArtWorks files. Sometimes systematically removing every component in turn from the pages is the only way to find the cause of the problem. Beware fonts from obscure sources and fonts converted from TrueType fonts (not that these are always at fault). Several characters aren't characters .. You can still use the glyphs, that you want, when you use these as shapes. After removing the textual glyphs. Use the font in !Draw. Convert the glyphs to shapes. Import these pictures as graphics. Maybe it isn't enough to remove the textual glyphs from the OP doc. All references to this font has to be removed, since any reference forces the PostScript printer driver to embed this faulty font ... Another way to force the PostScript driver to "ignore" this font (when reference is still in the OP doc, but no actual glyphs), is mapping this faulty font temporaly to e.g. Homerton.Medium by using !FontPrint. mrs Tonnie Demarteau - the Netherlands -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Wed Jun 5 21:14:14 2002 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <"pilling.1023307866:20:19844:92".pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Wed, 5 Jun 2002 21:14:14 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1023307866:20:19844:92; Wed, 05 Jun 2002 20:11:06 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2020312; 5 Jun 2002 20:10 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) id g55KOOq04727 for ovationpro-list; Wed, 5 Jun 2002 21:24:24 +0100 Received: from mta06-svc.ntlworld.com (mta06-svc.ntlworld.com [62.253.162.46]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) with ESMTP id g55KOMi04724 for ; Wed, 5 Jun 2002 21:24:22 +0100 Received: from tinshill.f9.co.uk ([80.0.16.154]) by mta06-svc.ntlworld.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.27 201-229-121-127-20010626) with SMTP id <20020605201032.LRBK4119.mta06-svc.ntlworld.com@tinshill.f9.co.uk> for ; Wed, 5 Jun 2002 21:10:32 +0100 Date: Wed, 5 Jun 2002 21:10:36 +0100 (BST) From: Anthony Hilton Subject: Re: Problems printing postcript To: Ovation Pro List In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII X-Organization: X-Mailer: ANT RISCOS Marcel [ver 1.53] Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro In on Wed 05 Jun, stephane HAbeTT roux wrote: > Thanks for all your help. Printed to file no problem but with letters instead of the dingbats for address, phone and fax. Manually changed those characters to FFDingbest and printed - "Internal Error, no stack for trap handler: Data Abort, pc = 400E992C: registers at 001373D0" and much hard disk activity, that is light on constantly. After about 5 minutes I gave up and Shift-Ctrl-Break'd to re-boot the RiscPC. The PostScript file is 33Mb - Ghostscript with Gview cannot display it. I was running the fonts straight from the zip using SparkFS. Tried again - downloaded anew and unpacked zip to hard disk, removed previous copies of the fonts from EasyfontPro, installed the new copies. Loaded into Opro and it still complained about missing fonts. Changed the dingbats into FFDingbest font and tried printing page 1 only (which doesn't use that font). I got an error again, the screen drawing was corrupted, but I could shutdown properly before pressing the reset button. Tried again using the font in !Draw and printing - same error again. Perhaps your best option is to add those characters in FFDingbest into a Draw document, convert to curves and put the resulting graphics into your main document - at least gets it printed now. That problem only occurs with this file. Are the bitmaps 16 or 32 bit? If not, they are probably the cause of your trouble. Also a pdf (not only a pdf made with RiScript Pro) has trouble with sprites less than 16 bit. Easy to change this with !ChangeFSI. Or try the sprites/bitmaps separately outside the OP doc. > I really need to get that pdf done quickly. > > OvationPro: 2.67 > Printers: 1.64a mrs Tonnie Demarteau - the Netherlands -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Wed Jun 5 21:14:35 2002 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <"pilling.1023214407:10:24551:58".pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Wed, 5 Jun 2002 21:14:35 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1023214407:10:24551:58; Tue, 04 Jun 2002 18:13:27 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id aa1024335; 4 Jun 2002 18:13 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) id g54IQVE00741 for ovationpro-list; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 19:26:31 +0100 Received: from mel-rto4.wanadoo.fr (smtp-out-4.wanadoo.fr [193.252.19.23]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) with ESMTP id g54IQSi00738 for ; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 19:26:28 +0100 Received: from mel-rta9.wanadoo.fr (193.252.19.69) by mel-rto4.wanadoo.fr (6.5.007) id 3CFB2969001254E2 for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 20:12:48 +0200 Received: from habett (193.253.193.56) by mel-rta9.wanadoo.fr (6.5.007) id 3CFB286C00119056 for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 20:12:48 +0200 Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 20:13:08 +0200 From: stephane HAbeTT roux To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: Problems printing postcript Message-ID: <86aa6e414b.habett@Jesus.wanadoo.fr> References: <001101c20bef$ad5a9800$4d01a8c0@padua> In-Reply-To: <001101c20bef$ad5a9800$4d01a8c0@padua> X-Organization: Islam Inc, canal anti.historique User-Agent: Messenger-Pro/2.60 (MsgServe/2.00a) (RISC-OS/4.03) POPstar/2.03 X-Peer2Peer-Protocol: Dummies to dummies X-Priority: 911 X-URL: http://habett.org/ X-Accept-Language: en, fr, perl, de X-Hello-Kitty: meow meow. That problem only occurs with this file. Sprites are not the problem. I have isolated a 2 pages OvationPro file that has the problem when trying to print as postscript.
