I guess everything prints in PostScript and GS is then equiped with the set of printer drivers. Might yet come to be relevant here. I know my own experience was that finding the right flags in GhostScript to get a particular type of output was a struggle but when I did, it was very useful. I had a document in PS off the web, and I used GS to print it to a Group 4 fax TIFF file of high enough resolution, which I could then easily print from ArcFax to my Laser Direct. There already /are/ printer drivers in Ghostscript. The one I tried a couple of times with my old Epson 660 actually produced better output than the one in !Printers. It does seem one way to go. Platform independent printer drivers! Brilliant. I've /absolutely/ no doubt it is useful. Like RISC OS. Of course for Windows (TM) the origin is at the top left and positive y is downwards. Quite logical, just a pity all my software works the Acorn way. By the sound of it we should trade, you can use Windows where there's lots of software, free software even seems plentiful. And I can go retire on the basis of writing some Mac stuff. I think in the Win market you get lots and lots of people writing a given program, and they end up competing on price until someone gives it away and hopes to make something out of having market share. Then lots of things are free for home use - get 'em hooked at home and they might buy a copy for work. The GNU license doesn't actually stop you making money, you are just not allowed to sell the software, only support services. I would guess that part of the problem is Richard Stallman & the GNU FSF attitude to Macs in the late 80s early 90s. Richard Stallman took exception (probably quite rightly) to Apples attempt to sue for copying the "look & feel" of a piece of software. Because of this all Apple products were black-listed by GNU & the FSF. So it is only in recent years that GNU software has become available on Macs. There were quite a few useful replies. But at all times remained the problem that when updating your system, one loses track of what was done. Therefore the following idea, born out of repeated loss of the Filters being active. And using a RO4 set up. I use a main directory 'DTP_new'. It has -now- many sub-directories, each with its own version of OvPro. One of the other sub-directories within 'DTP_new' is named 'FILTERS'. Now this directory has all the Filters presently available plus a ReadMe textfile I added. Within this ReadMe file is stated: These filters are loaded by: ADFS::HD4.$.!Boot.Choices.Boot.Desktop (HD4 being my primary hard disc from which the whole system is booted) The file ........ Desktop gives indications on how to use it. You can add instructions between a |Start and an |End. I therefore added the following lines somewhere near the end, just before the line that reads "|Start RISCOS !Boot 0.26 Options:": |Start initialise OvationPro's 0.00
Repeat Filer_Boot ADFS::HD4.$.'A.DTP_new.Filters -Applications -Tasks |End (I use the directory 'A for all technical files, and 'B for all data files. Making it easier to back up my data files. In the above 0.00 just stands for 'any version'; my idea.) In this way I can easily find and update the Filters (present in the main OvPro directory) and need not worry that the newest version is not used when loading any of the versions of OvPro. By the way: I have !Words in $.!Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk. Result: all dictionaries available for OvPro and for our old loyal Ovation 1.48 as well. That is by using the *Fontinstall command, which has to be followed by the *path* of the directory in which the POBar font is. Example: Copy the POBar fontdirectory in the Ovation Pro application add the line Fontinstall . to the !Boot file of Ovation Pro. Note the period ! Every time !Ovation Pro is loaded, the POBar font is installed, before the Barcode applet. Note: this command is also used in the !Boot file of the !Fonts folder in !Boot.Resources and -if I recall correctly- also already in !Fonts folders before the new boot structure. It would certainly be nicer, when this fontinstall was done *within* the Bar Codes applets, so that the font only is loaded, when the Bar Code applet is installed. Indeed a very nice 4th solution as the POBar font is then only loaded when using OvPro. I did not think that far as I also use the POBar font with other programs when I need to drag addresses in special letters using envelopes with windows. This can be Ovation v1.42S, EasiWriter, Fireworkz or TEXTease. The postal coding is present in my database as Ascii characters. Applying the POBar font changes these characters to the Postal bar code. So I have the POBar font loaded at all times. How to save the Postal bar code as Ascii characters? Create the bar code using the POBar applet. Mark this code and save it as selection into Edit. This text can then be saved into your database. (You can easily copy the Edit text using !PtrCopy by Ran Mokady (c)1990. It is PD. To be used with the System font. It is bundled with !Tiger5, available from APDL.) I have tried a lot of my older and newer OvP files with fonts and bitmaps in OvP 266, Setscreen {Dot} on, PostScript printing with Printers 1.64 (Level 2), RiScript Pro 4.13 didn't complain at all. I haven't made separations. There is a HTM file (RiScript PostScript Command Compatibility) on the support disc about the commands RiScript Pro supports. About the setcreen command it states that it is partially implemented and that it doesn't support halftone screens. A continuously updated version of this table may be found at: www.cerilica.com/riscript/compat.htm BTW, when I had this problem with an older version of RiScript Pro, printing to my PostScript printer or distil the PostScript file in Acrobat 3 was fine. Maybe you can try to find the culprit: text or graphics by printing to file without pictures. It would be nice, when the co-operation between OvP and RiScript Pro could be made as optimal as possible. mrs. I am talking about NT, is the effect any different on '98 etc.? Some Win software has its own font aliasing, which looks better or at least more obvious, e.g. the Adobe PDF viewer. And I think there's something like Adobe type manager available as an add on, does that give better, system wide results? Since the results are so poor in MS operating systems, what with MS being the worlds biggest software company I guess the whole technique is suspect. Having seen it on Windows I'd definitely not move from Windows to another OS on the strength of that feature. I am using Version 2.66. I edit a small newsletter which is produced in pamphlet form and is either 8 or 12 pages (2 or 3 paper sheets). For ease of editing I decided to split the document into 4 chapters with continuous numbering throughout the document. The master pages are all single sheet. The number of pages in each chapter varies in each issue according to content. In any issue, each chapter is a minimum of 1 page and a maximum of 4 pages - and there are never any blank pages. For example, the latest issue has 3,1,2,2 pages (total 8) respectively in the four chapters - and intended to end up as two sheets of paper only. When producing this as a pamphlet I was surprised to find that in order to ensure that unwanted blank pages (and therefore extra sheets) are not introduced, I need to take care to amend *each chapter* so that it starts on the appropriate Left/Right side. (For the above example it needed to be R/L/R/R respectively for the 4 chapters.) I can see that this arrangement can often have advantages, particularly for books - but equally there are occasions, as above, when it is a nuisance and a straight run through automatically would be preferred. Is there currently a way of making the choice between the two? If not, could the choice please be added in a future upgrade? Is it > that dire that no one uses it or what? Have you tried to use the module FontFix, version 0.03, that David Pilling recently has made freely available on his website? Previously it was only available in the !FontFix application, released by RISC User (Richard Hallas)and now part of the "RISC User ... in a Nutshell" CD (R-Comp). When you load this module (after DitherExtend and GDraw) and configure it on the CLI with *FontFix_ON G (instead of the default *FontFix_ON LBG), you will be pleasantly surprised with the display in many circumstances. Especially, when RiScript has to render T3 fonts or shapes, distilled with Acrobat. If all goes as planned, an article about this module will appear in the next issue (October 2001, due 20 September) of Archive. How do I know? I wrote it. BTW, you can have and see anti-aliasing in Windows. At least in Acrobat with the standard fonts Times, Helvetica, Courier. When you distill a little file (I used the home page of Explorer) to pdf and display the pdf output together with the original file, the difference between those two is remarkable. But, I think this is Adobe's merit (use of Type1 fonts ?), not plain-Windows (use of TrueTypes ?). So, when it is necessary to read long documents in Windows, your eyes can benefit by distilling a pdf for this reading! mrs. For programmer type reasons chapters start on the left or right hand side - fixed and unchanging. The programmer type reasons is that otherwise, in a 600 page document you'd insert a page somewhere in the middle, possibly every succeeding page would then change from a left to a right hand layout. Massive computation. And a second later you could delete that page. This problem has come up before, and I am sympathetic to providing a feature where you click and the program then changes any chapters to the right starting side. I'm grateful for the response - but don't quite understand this bit. Did you mean the 'right' starting side as opposed to left - or 'right' as opposed to wrong? Can we take my original example of a 4-chapter document with chapters of 3,1,2,2 pages respectively with identical master pages all of a single sheet (i.e. not 'double page spread'). Assuming we want all of this this printed as a pamphlet of just 8 pages (2 sheets of paper, double side printing), are you offering the possibility of a single click that would ripple through the document to change *any* of the chapter starting sides that may be needed to produce the pamphlet as described? If so, then that's all I want! (So I rather doubt that I've understood it correctly!) Sorry to be a pain but could you use my example to explain exactly what you were suggesting could be possible? -- Regards from Ray Favre. To be sure everything loads in correct order, I have put it in an application, that I called !LoadFFix. In this application I put a selfmade !Run file and the FontFix module. No !Sprites. My !Run contains the lines: Set LoadFFix$Dir | replace in the following lines with the actual directory e.g. | CCShared$Dir. | or adfs::$.Harddisc4.!AWViewer.RMStore. RMEnsure DitherExtend 0.00 RMLoad .DitherExt RMEnsure GDraw 0.00 RMLoad .GDraw RMENsure Fontfix 0.03 RMLoad .FontFix FontFix_ON G set alias$ffg "FontFix_ON G |M *echo FontFix=ON" set alias$ffo "FontFix_OFF |M *echo FontFix=OFF" Note: in command lines 2 and 3 needs to be replaced with the actual path DitherExtend needs to be present before GDraw. Both before FontFix. After loading FontFix, the command with the correct parameter is given The 2 alias lines makes it possible to type ffg or ffo to turn on (with the correct parameter) or to turn off FontFix. The default parameters BLG cause a a kind of shadow-effect in filer windows, due to the parameter B. I have seen or experienced no other problems. As I said, no problems on my computer, when I use it this way. I like it and in much more programs, -that use vector graphics and fonts- than RiScript Pro. Of course, a programmer can make a better application around it with more options. As far as I know, there are already plans to do this. That's essentially what I was already using except that I wasn't loading DitherExt (I wasn't aware that it was needed) and hadn't set up an alias. Does seem to work fine now, whatever god there is knows why though. I haven't noticed the 'shadow effect' you mention in filer windows with the 'B' flag so I've enabled it in my !run file. -- Pete ==== +44 7711 501 757 There are two instruments worse than a clarinet. I've been working in IT support for a rather large organisation since 1990, (before that they didn't have an IT setup) my comments come from observation of the things MS have done to climb to the top of the heap. Theft of other peoples code is one of them.
