For ages, I've been doing it manually, but it seems like a good candidate for mechanisation. So, I've knocked together a quick'n'dirty applet that does this. Download from: http://www.kaijaks.co.uk/it/incsave.zip or navigate to the IT section from my Web page (address in .sig). Undoubtedly the code could be better but it seems to work. I prefer the use of generation numbers such as were/are implemented in ICL'S George3 and VME mainframe systems, where the file generation number is generally increased by 1 for each new version - that way, a filename without a qualifying generation refers to the latest, file(-1) to the previous etc I posted such a suggestion to the RiscOS wishlist, as it would be nice if this was a configurable feature of a filing system rather than one product or other. -- Pete Bready, Glasgow pbready@ntlworld.com -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Thu Mar 1 21:33:57 2001 Received: from punt-21.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA146565 for opro ; Thu, 01 Mar 101 21:33:55 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 983481636:20:09003:13; Thu, 01 Mar 2001 21:20:36 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2008968; 1 Mar 2001 21:20 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id VAA15066 for ovationpro-list; Thu, 1 Mar 2001 21:18:17 GMT Received: from anchor-post-34.mail.demon.net (anchor-post-34.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.92]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id VAA15063 for ; Thu, 1 Mar 2001 21:18:14 GMT Received: from omba.demon.co.uk ([158.152.58.5]) by anchor-post-34.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 2.12 #1) id 14YaSl-000798-0Y for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Thu, 1 Mar 2001 21:18:15 +0000 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Jeremy C B Nicoll To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2001 21:13:45 +0000 (GMT) Subject: Re: Backup copy in 'other' format Message-ID: <4a549aabcaJeremy@omba.demon.co.uk> In-Reply-To: References: <9a9255544a%Support@Gill.english.co.uk> <083e69544a.Tony@mk-net.demon.co.uk> User-Agent: Pluto/2.01g (RISC-OS/3.70) Content-Type: text/plain Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro On 01 Mar, Pete Bready wrote: > I prefer the use of generation numbers such as were/are implemented in > ICL'S George3 and VME mainframe systems, where the file generation > number is generally increased by 1 for each new version - that way, a > filename without a qualifying generation refers to the latest, file(-1) > to the previous etc > I posted such a suggestion to the RiscOS wishlist, as it would be nice > if this was a configurable feature of a filing system rather than one > product or other. Indeed. Generation Data Groups (GDG's) are an essential part of MVS (or OS/390 these days) file storage subsystem (DF/SMS) and works in conjunction with the system catalogs (which are basically lists of file names vv their locations - files on these systems don't have path-based names like ours do, and a file can be moved around from tape to disk to somewhere else without references to it needing to be changed by the users. Thus user names like file.name(0) for the most current version, file.name(-1) for the previous one etc, and file.name(+1) when one is creating a new instance... Once the new instance is created the system updates the relative pointers so that it is now the (0) version and the others move down one slot and the very oldest eventually falls off the end of the list. There's a lot of work in creating something like that and a while I'd agree that it would be great if RO 4.x or 5.y had system support for something like this, who wants to wait that long. I'd be happy if a simple incrementing file-id mechanism could be built for OP first. -- Jeremy C B Nicoll - my opinions are my own. -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Fri Mar 2 02:43:15 2001 Received: from punt-21.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA146571 for opro ; Fri, 02 Mar 101 02:43:12 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 983487034:20:22029:16; Thu, 01 Mar 2001 22:50:34 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2022020; 1 Mar 2001 22:50 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id WAA15382 for ovationpro-list; Thu, 1 Mar 2001 22:48:22 GMT Received: from mta05-svc.ntlworld.com (mta05-svc.ntlworld.com [62.253.162.45]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id WAA15379 for ; Thu, 1 Mar 2001 22:48:20 GMT Received: from pbready ([62.253.9.12]) by mta05-svc.ntlworld.com (InterMail vM.4.01.02.27 201-229-119-110) with SMTP id <20010301224820.ELUJ272.mta05-svc.ntlworld.com@pbready> for ; Thu, 1 Mar 2001 22:48:20 +0000 Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2001 22:47:25 GMT From: Pete Bready To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: Backup copy in 'other' format Message-ID: References: <9a9255544a%Support@Gill.english.co.uk> <083e69544a.Tony@mk-net.demon.co.uk> <4a549aabcaJeremy@omba.demon.co.uk> In-Reply-To: <4a549aabcaJeremy@omba.demon.co.uk> X-Organization: Home User-Agent: Messenger-Pro/2.10d (MsgServe/1.10) (RISC-OS/4.02) POPstar/2.02 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro In message <4a549aabcaJeremy@omba.demon.co.uk> Jeremy C B Nicoll wrote: > On 01 Mar, Pete Bready wrote: > > > I prefer the use of generation numbers such as were/are implemented in > > ICL'S George3 and VME mainframe systems, where the file generation > > number is generally increased by 1 for each new version - that way, a > > filename without a qualifying generation refers to the latest, file(-1) > > to the previous etc > > > I posted such a suggestion to the RiscOS wishlist, as it would be nice > > if this was a configurable feature of a filing system rather than one > > product or other. > > Indeed. This sounds suspiciously like comparing A with A and finding a difference. In other words it should not matter how the sprite file is imported. Obviously there is scope for the files to be different in some way. For example if you saved as TIFF then what ended up in OPro would have come through some sort of TIFF loader. If you read the contents of the manual on page 97 of the CD version of OvPro (is in chapter 8 section 4), you can possibly discover that this "nudging of objects" already exists. Maybe less sophisticated as this new applet presents, but nevertheless present within OvPro. I have been using the in-built nudging facility already quite some time. Do not recall since which version it was implemented (2.48??) But do know that almost all objects in the OvPro manual, present on the CD, were positioned using this in-built facility. The ability to use the cursor keys to move the mouse pointer whilst dragging is taking place is useful, but it is hard work for a lot of objects. It is probably easier if you use the mouse left handed, otherwise you have to use the cursor keys with your left hand. I've been trying to re-create it... I am prety sure this is what I did: 1- Downloaded FontList applet. 2- Copied into my 'Master' Applets directory (where they all are kept should I want them) 3- Copied it, then,=A0into the Applets folder within OPro. 4- [I am not sure whether I had OPro loaded a this point, but would have Quit if so] 5- Ran OPro 6- Loaded document 7- Went down the apps list and found [I am certain] FontList and clicked. 8- Error: EREP came up. 9- Checked to see if I had put the Applet in the right place - it was there, correctly. 10- Tried again 11- Same error. 12- Quit OPro and reloaded. 13- Sent the email. 14- Looked again in Applets folder and realised it was switched off. 15- Switched it on. 16- Reloaded OPro 17- Fontlist worked. [Very busy, forgot to cancel report] 18- However, it then occurred to me: 'How did I find it *and activate it* on the Applets menu if it was switched off?' 19- Have just tried to repeat it...in vain - sorry Slainte --=20 Marten Gallagher - marten@annerykiln.co.uk http://www.annerykiln.co.uk/ -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Wed Mar 7 01:46:04 2001 Received: from punt-21.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA146819 for opro ; Wed, 07 Mar 101 01:46:02 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 983904755:20:00804:19; Tue, 06 Mar 2001 18:52:35 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2100821; 6 Mar 2001 18:52 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id SAA03188 for ovationpro-list; Tue, 6 Mar 2001 18:48:30 GMT Received: from mta03-svc.ntlworld.com (mta03-svc.ntlworld.com [62.253.162.43]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id SAA03185 for ; Tue, 6 Mar 2001 18:48:23 GMT Received: from pbready ([213.104.128.254]) by mta03-svc.ntlworld.com (InterMail vM.4.01.02.27 201-229-119-110) with SMTP id <20010306184820.KRZG283.mta03-svc.ntlworld.com@pbready> for ; Tue, 6 Mar 2001 18:48:20 +0000 Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2001 18:47:17 GMT From: Pete Bready To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: Backup copy in 'other' format Message-ID: References: <8e5fea564a.martinv@kaskaskia.ucs.de> In-Reply-To: <8e5fea564a.martinv@kaskaskia.ucs.de> X-Organization: Home User-Agent: Messenger-Pro/2.10d (MsgServe/1.10) (RISC-OS/4.02) POPstar/2.02 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro In message <8e5fea564a.martinv@kaskaskia.ucs.de> Martin Vethake wrote: > In message you wrote: > > > On Wed 28 Feb, Jeremy C B Nicoll wrote: > > > On 28 Feb, Tonnie Demarteau wrote: > > Their exist 2 (maybe more) programs for incremental saving: > > - !SmartSave written by Alan Wrigley, copyright RISC User 1993 > > - !backupNrs written by Briag, stated to be "Rhubarbware". > > > Well, I think it should be noted that http://www.flying-snail.de/ > have a program called LayerFS which does incremental backups on the fly > very nicely. There are three main uses for LayerFS: You can use a CD-ROM as if it was writeable; You can make journaled backups and You can have full incremental saving of files. Recently I have been trying to do this, and looking through the mailing list archives I see somebody else asked this a while ago. David's answer was that including by reference and then changing the format of the file should work. When I have tried this OvPro crashes with a type 5 error. Has anybody got this to work? Alternatively, is there away of locking the image scale and position so that they remain the same if a different image is dragged into the frame? At the moment image position and scale locks do not seem to be maintained in this situation.
