Usually the cheaper fonts are pirated clones of the expensive fonts. Take an expensive font, throw it in an application that will make it 1 mm thicker, then make it 1 mm thinner, no vector point will be at the same spot but the shape will be the same. Kerning list changed with random 1% shifts, nobody will notice it. Rename it, let someone else make a PD conversion list. That's the way all those cheap CDs appeared on the US market and abroad. And of course they will not restrict the license as much as the big foundries do, their fort is the price not the BSA. Must be 2/3 years ago I saw a message of an independent American Type 1 font designer in a font newsgroup who complained about EFF having nicked a design some months after its launch. I don't like that practice, on the other hand the big foundries ask prices and use a license system that is more based on what was the market in the eighties and before than it is now.The owners of licenses where printers and image setting shops in the old days. Fonts are more widely used, by professionals and consumers. Was the design bound to the lead type or the filmstrip and the resulting characters only an ink representation of it, now the design is in the medium itself. Bitstream is one of the few foundries that knows things have changed. The 'buffer overflow' error > message occurs on running ProArt24, when GylesSans is present in !Fonts in > its original form (or as per your modification). > What comes to my mind: 1) Are you sure you have removed the offending directories: GylesSans.Outline.Black.Extended.Oblique GylesSans.Outline.Bold.Condensed.Oblique 2) Are you sure you have modified: GylesSans.Outline.Black.Extended.Oblique into: GylesSans.Outline.Black.Extended.Obliq and GylesSans.Outline.Bold.Condensed.Oblique into: GylesSans.Outline.Bold.Condensed.Obliq because the directory/weight: GylesSans.Outline.Bold.Extended.Oblique doesn't need a modification It is obvious, when you have changed by mistake an already correct weight, one of the offending weights is still present. If you have done these modifications whilst GylesSans was active, (that is already in the fontcache), fontcat and !ProArt24 try to use the 'old' information, hence: 3) you must refresh the cache by a) restarting the computer, if you load this font on start-up b) using special font control software to remove GylesSans from the cache and load it again with the modified weights. I can't think of something else, why it doesn't work in your case. mrs. There is a draft copy of my article for Archive on my website at http://www.abacusline.demon.co.uk which deals with OLE. It is in three parts and includes many examples. With TableMate files loaded directly into Ovation Pro the does load the file Tablemate. The same thing happens with Eureka and TableCalc files. This is one of the examples which I use in my articles. Hence the 'problem' is likely to be caused by the Impression to Ovation Pro converter rather than within Ovation Pro. No, the problem doesn't get fixed... but I'm beginnning to narrow this down. It seems that any image that started life as either a Draw or Artworks file, which then goes into Photodesk and gets saved as a sprite doesn't print. Sprites that started as sprites do print, whether or not they started in PD or not. Does that help? That's probably because you saved them with masks. Untick the masks and try saving them out again as sprites and they will probably print. I have just finished a newsletter, consisting of 22 pages of text and graphics (3 !sprites and the rest !Drawfiles). The file is 7.73 MB in size. While the print job was loading I got an error message from OvationPro "Not enough memory". The first 15 pages printed successfully. but since then the error message is displayed every time I try to print - even one page! I seemed to recall David suggesting that if the amount of memory was increased in Choices - Print Memory that may overcome any such problem. So, being a "belt and braces" person, I increased it to a massive 5 MB. but the error is still with me. As other documents print successfully, it may be because I have so many graphic files. I've looked through the documentation to try and find out how to use the Proxy and/or Reference function for pictures bit cannot find anything. As I have to print the newsletter, so that it can be photocopied, by next Tuesday, I'm beginning to get worried. Is anyone able to help me, please. I don't think it is anything to do with memory, though I don't know how much memory you have. Have you tried clsing down your system and rebooting. That has usually cured the problem for me. It is probably not relevant but Impression has done this to me more often, but it then effects everyting. ONE bad graphic can have this effect, at least it had in Publisher. Suspect is one of the graphics in the pages that don't print, DrawFiles included, because they can contain also a sprite or an into Draw converted EPS with many, many objects. It may help to save the graphics to a DrawFile and try to print that to see if any of these is the culprit. If so, replacing that graphic with a correct one, can solve your problem. mrs. I had a similar problem once before I put a 64Mb RAM on board. My solution was to open the document, delete all pages bar one, print that page, close document (DON'T SAVE), open again, repeat procedure for each page. Make a back up copy of document - just in case - before you start. It is very noticeable how much extra processing time (and memory?) is needed if the document is being printed sideways. -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Fri Dec 8 21:28:54 2000 Received: from punt-21.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA141179 for opro ; Fri, 08 Dec 100 21:28:51 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 976294619:20:05542:24; Fri, 08 Dec 2000 16:56:59 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2005172; 8 Dec 2000 16:56 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id PAA07562 for ovationpro-list; Fri, 8 Dec 2000 15:53:34 GMT Received: from anchor-post-30.mail.demon.net (anchor-post-30.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.88]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id PAA07559 for ; Fri, 8 Dec 2000 15:53:31 GMT Received: from abacusline.demon.co.uk ([194.222.194.153]) by anchor-post-30.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 2.12 #1) id 144Qko-000NsU-0U for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Fri, 8 Dec 2000 16:52:14 +0000 Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2000 16:50:59 +0000 (GMT) From: Ovation Pro Subject: Re: Not enough Memory To: Gerald L Fitton In-Reply-To: <000f01c0610b$dfb66120$4d01a8c0@padua> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII X-Organization: Organisation name, location. I have had similar problems in the past using Impression when one of the graphics has been 'cropped' in order to view viewing only a small part of it within the Impression document. When this has happened I have Saved all my graphics individually (similar names for the graphics to the original names but in a 'scrap' directory). Then I have Loaded this second set of Graphics into a different package (often referenced graphics in PipeDream) and then tried printing to a file (rather than waste paper and time). In PipeDream you can print one page at a time - useful for problems of this type. This operation has allowed me to identify the 'rogue' graphic. More often than not, reloading the 'rogue' graphic into Draw or Paint, making a trivial change to the graphic, and then resaving before reloading (into PipeDream) has fixed the problem. I don't know how or why it happens. I have not yet had the 'problem' in Ovation Pro but it does sound very similar to the problem I have had now and again (about five times in about eight years) with big files (lots of 'cropped' graphics) in Impression. I was preparing a document which used the Newhall.Medium font and when I loaded the document to continue to work on it, the text spread outside the frame on the right hand side. Forcing a screen redraw didn't change the situation, so I printed a copy just to see if the text would at least print within the frame, but it printed as displayed on screen. Changing the font to Trinity.Medium solved the problem, but has anyone else seen this type of behaviour? I've used this font in Impression without any problems. Of course, I've just tried to reproduce this behaviour and I can't! Another problem, with the same document, was with a line which started with a number. I was entering the first line of an address, which started with the number 14. Pressing Return to input the next line caused it to begin with the number 15. Deleting the number 15 and continuing to type moved the text up on top of the text on the previous line. I don't have auto-insert switched on in the Text->Format dialogue box, so why is this happening? This is probably a FAQ, but whenever I open a window in OPro after first loading it I get three windows opening; Page Palette, Cols and Styles. How do I prevent these from opening automatically? One last one - I use Steve Fryatt's excellent !PCKeys module which makes the Delete, Home and End keys work the same way as on a PC keyboard. It works with OPro with PC Style Delete switched off, with the exception of the Home key, which should move the cursor to the beginning of the current line, but in fact does nothing. While the print job was loading I got an error message from >OvationPro "Not enough memory". Interestingly (if the above text is accurate) that error message is Ovation Pro running out of memory, not some part of RISC OS (I think). Versions prior to 2.60 sometimes require a lot more memory than they should do, for things like image processing JPEG's. Its a bug, instead of printing in strips they attempt to print all in one go. If you don't have 2.60 you can always use the demo version off my web site for printing. Another suspect is printing something in an irregular frame or a rectangular frame at an angle - because this will have to be rendered to a temporary bit map (which is why and where the print memory setting comes in). You might for fun try printing to PostScript - this has irregular clipping so the temporary memory used is much less. >The first 15 pages printed successfully. but since then the error message >is displayed every time I try to print - even one page! This points in a different direction. I'd have a look at memory allocations in the task manager. >problem. So, being a "belt and braces" person, I increased it to a >massive 5 MB. but the error is still with me. Of course you can change that setting to 20MB on a machine with only 4MB of RAM - it'll never get the memory. In general referenced images help with memory shortages, because only the image being rendered has to be in RAM. Proxies use memory but can make using references more bearable (less disc activity). Strictly speaking it is impossible, because later versions have new features which earlier ones don't have. In practice what you'd do is look at how the DDL from 2.60 differs from that produced by 2.52. Those differences are fairly small and a simple text processing program could make them. (Perl fans). It is especially useful with para. numbering, enabling very easily successive indents with hierarchical numeration systems, such as the widely used 'x, x.y, x.y.z ..........convention'. And it is just as easily reversible. Is there anything comparable with OP? I have partially achieved the same by setting up a style to create an indent, but it is still not as easy or flexible to use. There certainly seems to be an assumption with Windows software that one can install for one's own use on a portable as well as on a desktop without paying any extra. OK I know that on Windows machines software licensing is largely ignored by home users but I have seen licenses where portable installation, and indeed installation to a users second or third home machine was perfectly in order - or could be had for a very small extra license fee (eg 10 ukp). Most people don't want to deliberately flout licensing restrictions but they are unlikely to buy two (or more) full copies of software *for their own use*. So could we have reasonable single user/second machine licensing schemes please? I guess it would generate more income than expecting people to buy full second copies or site licenses. -- skypilot@bigfoot.com / andymcmullon@redhotant.com -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Mon Dec 11 19:13:34 2000 Received: from punt-11.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA141585 for opro ; Mon, 11 Dec 100 19:13:32 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 976561845:10:21828:27; Mon, 11 Dec 2000 19:10:45 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id aa1124954; 11 Dec 2000 19:10 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id SAA21949 for ovationpro-list; Mon, 11 Dec 2000 18:08:41 GMT Received: from tele-post-20.mail.demon.net (tele-post-20.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.20]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id SAA21945 for ; Mon, 11 Dec 2000 18:08:38 GMT Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([158.152.9.39]) by tele-post-20.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 2.12 #2) id 145YIE-000KT2-0K for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Mon, 11 Dec 2000 19:07:22 +0000 Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 18:59:16 GMT Message-Id: <141506@pilling.demon.co.uk> From:(David Pilling) To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: Auto paragraph numbering X-Mailer: ArcBM 1.11 Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro >Whilst we are on this subject, one useful feature of MS Word which I value >when I have to use it is the Para Indent button. Microsoft licences are the most changeable in this respect, I've seen Office licence agreements that allow, and others that specifically *disallow* second installs on portables used by the same single user. Currently allowed, but has varied in the past, is the issue of buying a licence for the current release and installing a previous release.
