PS fills are generated by code in the PS output file. If I try the above then radial or linear I see gradations. However I'm kinda not surprised because if you push up the lpi figure you have less grey levels to play with. If I turn down the lpi figure, more shades of grey, then things look much better. Not what I see here. And quite in contrast with the rules. You need a grid of 16 x 16 to make 256 steps of gray. For a 600 dpi printer that means less than 40 lpi. It could be that there is also a printer dotsize range in the printer you are using like in HP's REt technology. Then the range, say 3 sizes, is another positive factor. It will make 120 lpi graduate fills possible. Draw a simple frame. Fill it with a linear gradual fill from 0% magenta to 100% magenta. Set the screen to 133 lpi. Copy the frame. Change the linear fill of the second frame to a radial fill. Now print this file with colour separation for magenta to a file. Load this file into Ghostsview and watch the result in 16 million colours. (You can also print it on a 2400 dpi printer, if you have one). It appears that only the radial fill is equally graduated. The linear isn't. (By the way, this effect can easliy be reproduced on my 1200 dpi postscript printer, albeit at lower lpi settings (about 90). So I suppose this is something to be solved. If you select double sided you can then specify left and right pages differently for columns and guides, or you can specify them as a mirrored pair. Can I add a warning abolut using a Thin line which will be printed? The definition of Thin is one pixel on the output device. This is OK on screen, or at 300dpi, you may even get away with it at 600dpi, but any higher resolution and you are likely to lose it. Presumeably RISC OS thinks these JPEG's are corrupt. Maybe it is right, maybe they're just a format it doesn't know about. The obvious work around is to convert to sprites. >I always convert to sprites before putting onto a frame, and have had no >trouble. ImageFS is always in use so my images are converted without me >thinking about it. Which is fair enough, but in some situations using JPEG's directly in documents can save a lot of memory. Using RO4.02 and the drive has been formatted to use long filenames so fsck seems to be out of the game :-( P.S. the Impression loader is great - not sure about what it does to the borders though!!!!!! It may not be possible but I thought I would ask anyway. I have setup a double sided master page with four frames per side set out in the following pattern. Side 1 12 34 Side 2 56 78 What I cannot seem to do is link the frames together. I want them linked in the following pattern. Frame 1 to frame 6. Frame 6 to frame 2. Frame 2 to frame 5. Frame 5 to frame 3. Frame 3 to frame 8. Frame 8 to frame 4. Frame 4 to frame 7. Frame 7 to frame 1. I can get the first link ok, but when I try the second link I get an error about linking from a right page to a left page (or was it the other way round). Is this possible or am I asking too much. Dave's suggestion is probably what was at the back of my mind when I asked. I downloaded CleanJPEG, dropped the directory containing 6 jpegs onto it and after a few minutes processing it reported that a particular saving in size had been achieved. The cleaned JPEGs do now load into Draw and Ovation Pro, but do not print from Opro Bernard Veasey also sent me a copy of Sprite Extend module which he recommended putting into !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk. Did that, re-booted and Draw and OPro now load the original files. But still no print from OPro. The combination does print - clean the jpegs first and then load them into OPro when Sprite Extend is installed. The other suggestion of use ChangeFSI to convert to 8bit greyscale sprites might still be the best solution (output is to BW laser for photocopying). I've often wanted to run around either a picture or irregular frame, but frequently find it problematic with lines wrapping where they shouldn't (either too short even allwoing for word length, or the screen redraws but the text goes OVER the graphic. John Kortinck was good enough to discuss things with me. I've had a look at the code in question, and I've let him look at it. We can't see anything wrong with it. It correctly reads the location of screen memory. His suggestion was that the problem was with screen memory addresses being too big (the old -ve memory problem). >Does this solution only affect graphics in irregular frames, or any >graphics in any frames? Just graphics in irregular frames. Actually it may also affect graduated fills of irregular frames? Sorting this out, means getting someone with a ViewFinder card to run a debug version of OPro so that I can see just what is going wrong. What is worse is that on editing the points (deleting some of the unwanted ones) I have sometimes then had a complete crash of OvationPro (even with version 2.58). Is there a way to restrict the number of (initial) points? Yes. I find it almost always crashes. Usually some of the points leave 'debris' & become unselectable. I'd like to drag/select a number of points & delete them in one go, rather then delete them one at a time. -- Mik Towse * mik.towse@xemik.com * http://www.xemik.com/ My writers' site can be found at: http://www.lexis.org.uk If it says "one size fits all", it doesn't fit anyone. -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Thu Jul 6 14:53:41 2000 Received: from punt-21.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA129728 for opro ; Thu, 06 Jul 100 14:53:39 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 962850184:20:25514:15; Thu, 06 Jul 2000 02:23:04 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2102971; 6 Jul 2000 2:23 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id CAA14217 for ovationpro-list; Thu, 6 Jul 2000 02:19:07 +0100 Received: from finch-post-12.mail.demon.net (finch-post-12.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.41]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id CAA14205 for ; Thu, 6 Jul 2000 02:19:05 +0100 Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([158.152.9.39]) by finch-post-12.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 2.12 #1) id 13A1F4-0003K9-0C for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Thu, 6 Jul 2000 02:18:19 +0000 Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 03:09:22 GMT Message-Id: <129724@pilling.demon.co.uk> From:(David Pilling) To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: irregular frames X-Mailer: ArcBM 1.11 Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro >I already edit the path, but usually there are so many points it is almost >a pointless exercise. >Is there a way to restrict the number of (initial) points? The way I'd see it (having been over all this with parallel port scanners), is that parallel ports on modern Acorn kit have several modes; SPP - simple parallel port Bidi - bidirectional parallel port EPP - enhanced parallel port ECP - enhanced capabilities port The thing about EPP (or ECP) mode is that instead of software doing the handshaking, the hardware does it, consequently things go faster. I assume this is what the fast parallel mode uses. >1. Is the cable you are using "all pins connected" or one of the older >style where the pins 12 - 18 (IIRC) are earthed, or not connected at all? I don't know, its an old one, but has driven scanners in all the above modes. >2. Does the printer actually have a fast parallel interface? Again no idea, but I assume a new HP printer is going to be compatible with everything. >3. RISC OS 4? with all the patches, at least one patch affects the >behaviour of the printer port. Yes RISC OS 4 with all the patches. Again I'm guessing but the error seems to be of the type where the printer driver is executing a SWI the parallel device module does not support, rather than some hardware problem. I can generate the error without a printer connected, just install the driver, set to parallel and print. Yes - I have the same problem. What would be very useful would be if OPro implemented some form of "style" for pictures as Techwriter does. I often have a need to have a number of image frames all with the same attributes, e.g. border type, drop shadow, image scale. Control *does work* in this situation. However there is a limit, whatever is imported must be less than half the height/width of what it is embedded into. Otherwise it is scaled down. >What would be very useful would be if >OPro implemented some form of "style" for pictures Can't argue with that. There are lots of things e.g. curves or image processing options that it would be nice to be able to copy between objects. Although any program that allowed this would probably be over complex for many users. Actually I have an idea... direct import of pictures causes a lot of upset. Whilst I can't do better for frames in general, I could do so for rectangular frames - which is most of them. After a bit of testing this is what I can ascertain. (can anybody else reproduce these errors?) The problem arises after a graphic has been imported into a frame on the main pages (not the master pages) then the master page is edited, after altering a master frame the master page window is closed and the type 5 error occurs. It doesn't happen in every frame but what seems to be the first frame on the master page. So opening a new document, edit the masterpage and remove the autolink, close the master page, import a sprite or jpeg, edit the masterpage once more, alter the frame, and then close the masterpage window gives me a Type 5 error. As does creating a document via the 'New...' menu with no default master frame, edit masterpage, create a blank frame, close masterpage window, drag sprite into frame, re-edit masterpage, alter the frame size and close window. Frames other than the first one on the masterpage don't seem to be affected. One thing for DavidP to note is that on removing the Colour supplement the error is not produced. BTW this is with 2.58 and ColSupp1.08 Gav. -- Gavin Crawford gavcrawf@argonet.co.uk -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Tue Jul 11 02:48:34 2000 Received: from punt-21.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA129935 for opro ; Tue, 11 Jul 100 02:48:18 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 963268618:20:21379:15; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 22:36:58 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2021345; 10 Jul 2000 22:36 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id WAA28035 for ovationpro-list; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 22:34:29 +0100 Received: from mserv1a.u-net.net (mserv1a.u-net.net [195.102.240.34]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id WAA28032 for ; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 22:34:27 +0100 Received: from [195.102.204.65] (helo=Caslon.english.co.uk) by mserv1a.u-net.net with smtp (Exim 2.10 #63) id 13Bm7V-0007da-00 for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 23:33:45 +0100 Received: from Gill (10.0.1.1) by Caslon.english.co.uk; Mon, 10 Jul 2000 23:33:44 +0100 Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 23:34:08 +0100 From: David Graddol To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: printing black/white + PMS color Message-ID: In-Reply-To: X-Organization: The English Company (UK) Ltd X-Mailer: Messenger v1.41d for RISC OS MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro Nico ter Haar wrote: > Hello all, > > I've a small phamplet style I have to reproduce about 50 times, probably > gone be 10 pages A4. I'm not sure exactly what you mean but I guess you could mean either that the printer renders black as a PMS colour or that you want to print in black plus a spot colour. If you mean the former, then you can preview it quite simply by redefining 'black' as whatever CMYK colour you want (if the printer is really using PMS colours then get hold of the 'generic' colour chart for Ovation). You may need to redefine it again as black before sending to the printer depending on the process you and/or the printer are using.
