I have a well-used stylesheet which I know to be satisfactory. It consists of a set of 14 frames set out for standard laser labels, linked in order and forming an autolink series. I now have a CSV file of some 100 lines, with 5 fields per line. I need to mailmerge fields 1 and 5 only from each line on to successive labels. I put the tags [merge 1] and [merge 5] into the top left label and dragged the CSV file into the slot provided on the mailmerge dialogue box. All seems well at this point, but the results are erratic, with some blank pages and some with just one correct label top-left, and even one with the same label in 3 positions. I'm using version 2.52, which seems to have a more complex dialogue box than that shown in the manual. Does it matter that the CSV file does not in fact have "" around each text item? I put the tags [merge 1] and [merge 5] into the top left label and The trouble with this, is it doesn't sound as if it would work anyway. There are two techniques commonly used. One is to take the CSV file and turn it into a text file with the data from records separated by new frame codes, and pour it into a document like the one described above. This gets you the result you want, but doesn't involve mail merge. Plan B is described in the document on advanced mail merge techniques on my web site, here *all* the frames have mail merge tags in, and all but one have a field set up to skip a record. But you don't mention doing anything like this. >I'm using version 2.52 You can get 2.56 from the web site. >Does it matter that the CSV file does not in fact have "" around each >text item? The files grew at each stage - OPro 81K, PS 797K, PDF 1.3M I'm surprised about the last stage. A PDF file is usually significantly smaller than the PS file used to generate it - sometimes ten times smaller. If you do not have EFF's 'Publisher' version of LondonA font (i.e. the Postscript Type 1) then the font will be embedded as a Type 3 which I believe takes up much more filespace (I think its basically a hi res bitmap version of the font). I see, independent thinkers need not apply for this qualification. Interesting that using MS products is almost a requirement these days for certain educational standards, or at least it appears that way. I think the better way is the one outlined in the mail merge document on the web site. But OTOH Bernard Veasy has a small program that will do the transformation from CSV format for you. So, to pass the exam, how do I have to solve the problem? There is a definite feeling that while superficially flashy presentations have increased in the last 2 or 3 years the level of underlying understanding has fallen considerably, directly paralleling the rise of Windows in schools. A few erstwhile Acorn places known to me have jumped ship, or more likely been forced to, and all now deeply regret it. MS is lovely for 'edutainment', but it's interesting how quickly the users can get the machine to supply the right answer, while the question bypasses the brain altogether. O-Pro is a superb, fast, efficient and instinctive piece of software provided you can read and understand long, hard words like 'leading'. It has proved this year to be far more effective at DTP-type coursework than Word. In fact at moderation meetings others have been quite sniffy about the *precision* of our work and the ease with which it was produced. I say this is not an office and we are not in the business of producing hordes of little typists. The boards are actually at great pains to avoid bias of any kind and it will interest readers here that the Chief Examiner in IT for the AQA board is a RiscOS man. I quote: 'the software can come from outer space so long as it works and you explain what you are doing'. A rather different view from the common perception, perhaps. Our results are as good as anywhere and there's not a PC in sight, other than a handful of private portables which are a confounded nuisance and have a breakage rate of 50% p.a. > > I think the better way is the one outlined in the mail merge document > on the web site. In truth, I have one of my own writing, but it makes things just that bit too simple- after all, if there's nothing to do, there's no write-up and hence no marks! No, in this case I'm going to put the CSV file into Fireworkz, delete columns 2 3 and 4, save as text, use !Edit to change 0A to 0C, 09 to OA (they're supposed to know all about ASCII) and drop it into OPro- and argue the toss later if need be, but somehow I don't think I shall have to:-) > > So, to pass the exam, how do I have to solve the problem? Well, depends how long you want to spend on it. Try taking the CSV file into DataPower, and setting up a multi-card report... Sorry, this seems to be leading into an altogether different discussion group. I need a drink. My predecessor encouraged the use of MS stuff in an effort to discredit the RiscPCs. He failed to achieve this. What has happened is that there are a lot of PCs at home abandoned to games and perhaps a bit of basic word processing, while the real work is done at school on the RiscPCs. We are perhaps fortunate in having enough fully developed new SA machines to satisfy demand. If anyone wants to quote a highly successful nil-PC site, do contact me. Just a p.s. to wind this up- I shall not in fact use the rather convoluted method I mentioned yesterday. Thanks to David for mentioning Bernard Veasey's !CSVEdit, to Roger King for detailing its advantages and of course to Bernard for writing it. It is far superior to my own poor effort and that's what we are all going to use. Sorry what do you want to match? A single space or some smart wildcard that will match many of them? You can find/replace - by entering just that as the string. Any documented created or edited in 2.57 cannot be loaded into older versions of the program. There's no big change in file format, I've simply increased the file compatability level from 1 to 2 (byte no. 88 in the file if anyone wants to change it back). Strictly speaking this should have been done when new features like proxy pictures came in. I didn't enforce those because they are not easy to use by accident. One new feature in 2.57 is easy to use without realising - individual leaders for tabs. The point is though that once you've used 2.57 on your documents you'll not be able to use them on older versions or pass them on to others who don't have 2.57. Second there are lots of new features and bug fixes, it may well be that some of them cause serious problems, and of course you can't go back to 2.56. So this version is a test run, only brave pioneers should get involved in trying it. 2.57 needs a new colour supplement and a new fill applet, and both these are in the upgrade archive. The archive will only upgrade 2.52 to 2.57. If this version is OK, the other variants will follow shortly. New features include *Multiple clip boards *Copy and Paste chapters *Individual leader strings and decimal tab characters for tabs *Set screen for fills *Enhancements to the text base line grid *Support for Impression style cross hairs when dragging *Save user defined styles as text *Extended button macros *Numerous bug fixes, including the one that leads to corrupt dictionaries. Don't know what's wrong but >without that applet everything goes well. You may recall some discussion about a bug in one version of the NewFrame applet. Older versions of OPro just allowed it to poke random bits of memory, which would only sometimes result in a fatal crash. 2.57 traps the illegal attempts - hence the error message. A new version of the applet is available from the support site. The NewDocs.New257 file gives you some macros for using them. After that its really up to you to decide how you'd like them to work. I suspect that most naive users can ignore them, power editors may find them useful. I'll give an example of a problem I had at Christmas - I needed to copy the text from 24 small frames into a text story. So I set up a key macro which selected all the text in the current story, copied it to a clip board and stepped to the next clip board. That meant I could just click to position the caret and press the key 24 times. I then set up another macro to paste and step clipboard. Position the caret in the destination, and execute that macro 24 times and the job was done. This way of working makes the clipboards act like a stack, which you push things on to (copy) and then pop from (paste). The 'bigcopy' and 'bigpaste' macros mentioned above implement it. Another approach is to set up buttons to move through the clipboards and with the clipboard on view move to the one you're interested in and then paste from it. I suppose you'd just replace copyselection(); with {setcurrentclipboard(getcurrentclipboard()+1)}","");copyselection();} in the existing button macro, and similar for paste. >On a totally unrelated note - Is there any way to get the !HideDoc applet to >have one of my own master documents as a default instead of an (empty) document >called 'PictureCache' which seems always to be there? This is also covered in the fine print with 2.57. OPro has various internal documents which should be invisible to users, but aren't always. There's a new HideDoc which makes use of a new 2.57 feature to fix this. But I can't stick it on the site until everything goes 2.57. Nothing in the notes produces anything tangible... well a load of error messages..."Error: Needed ';' got '}' at line 1 in Macro", and such like. Loada bollox... However I solved the problem. The last line of the boot file had acquired some extra characters. Once I tidied this up the problem disappeared and the upgrade was fine. Having deleted the offending characters I cant remember exactly what they were but [0d] appeared a couple of times in it. Is this a carriage return? Thanks for the reply. However all is well now. I've not had time to do anything with it yet, as "family" things have to come first today, before I can play. :-( Funnily enough I'd done some of what you suggest in your info, the only difference being... in the 2.57 info doc the Macros are defined as: The following macro definitions are useful. defmacro(2,"nextclip","{setcurrentclipboard(getcurrentclipboard()+1)}",""); Obviously I copied the thing exactly as written in the doc, which now transpires was a pointless exercise. One tiny niggle, though; I seem to lose my choices and the preferences as incorporated in the default document (things like the date format for the former and the hyphenation set-up for the latter). Am I doing something wrong, or is this something inherent in the upgrade method? If so, could it be fixed? One other little point: I don't understand the way of making multiple clipboards (anything including the words 'macro' or 'script' tend to make my brain close), but if I do get into this how does the global clipboard fit in? I use this a lot to transfer data between OPro and StrongEd and back. TIA, Peter. -- Peter \ / \ Prestbury, Cheltenham, Glos. Anne \ / __ __ \ England.
