In the DDL file you may well discover a line (hopefully in a "textframe" which includes "{masterframe 1}") a line something close to "{w 445777}". It's not possible to give an exact formula because OvPro holds numbers to a far greater precision than it displays in the width setting box. Replace this number with a suitable millipoint setting for what you want and then reload the DDL (making very sure you have kept a safe backup of your original document!!) -- Deri James dawn chorus(n): Nature's way of telling the programmer to go to sleep. -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Fri Dec 3 13:49:06 1999 Received: from punt-11.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA112176 for opro ; Fri, 03 Dec 99 13:49:04 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 944191205:10:10469:17; Fri, 03 Dec 99 03:20:05 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id aa1100857; 3 Dec 99 3:19 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id DAA06371 for ovationpro-list; Fri, 3 Dec 1999 03:04:49 GMT Received: from finch-post-12.mail.demon.net (finch-post-12.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.41]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id DAA06366 for ; Fri, 3 Dec 1999 03:04:48 GMT Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([158.152.9.39]) by finch-post-12.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 2.12 #1) id 11tj0g-00025N-0C for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Fri, 3 Dec 1999 03:03:50 +0000 Date: Fri, 03 Dec 99 01:41:15 GMT Message-Id: <112166@pilling.demon.co.uk> From:(David Pilling) To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: Master pages X-Mailer: ArcBM 1.11 Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro I'd better start by saying things could be better with the master pages, all in due course. What's an inch? The DDL save/reload itself doesn't really do much to *content* (apart from fix problems ;-), it does however reset the view and print options etc to default values. If you are on a network and using shared printers, then a similar error occurs if the machine with shared printer becomes unavailable for any reason during a print job. I have seen it very occasionally here. On the other hand you may not even have a network card. Some users have reported that the error occurs because, during the upgrade process, Access has somehow been enabled without the user initially being aware, and Printers starts looking for a non-existent network share. Try checking your network settings. One is a document and the second is an appendix (appendix 2) for the document. I understand that I cannot merge them as OPro files, but I assume there must be a way to do it with DDL files. I can save both as DDL and I can see in the main document where appendix one is. Unfortunately, it is not very obvious to the computationally challenged like me just whare in the main DDL file I should make the insert. It is also not very obvious which bits of the 'appendix 2' file need to be merged as it seems to contain all sorts of information that is probably already supplied in the main file. The second file is a detailed list of addresses formatted in a particular way so I would be very miffed if I had to import it as text as set about the formatting all over again. I'd be interested in hearing answer with regard to DDL myself: I increasingly need to merge files and I have even been reduced to doing it at PostScript level (using PSUtils). Actually, I would welcome the facility to insert pages/chapters from one document to another. One way round your problem, in the meantime, may be as follows: 1 Create a new (blank) chapter in document 1 with the principal frame as you want it. 2 open document 2 (the appendix) 3 select all 4 copy (i.e. ctrl-c) 5 insert caret at start of blank chapter in document 1 and paste. (After stage 3, you could try just holding down select and dragging and dropping from one document to another) The exact effect of this will depend on how you have your general preferences set (if you have a different style with the same name in the appendix than you need to ensure that the rename option is selected). But you should be able to retain the formatting. Roughly speaking a DDL file sets off with definitions of things like colours, then follow all the chapter and master page definitions. Then come the actual document chapters, pages etc. So you would have to insert a new chapter/master pages with the other such objects, and then insert the document chapter and pages. All this assumes that the fonts and colours have the same definitions (which they probably won't...) I would open both documents in OPro, Create the new chapter (or however you want to handle Appendix 2) in the main document. Highlight all of Appendix 2, CTRL-C to copy it to OPro's clipboard. Go back to the main document and CTRL-V to paste all that text in, formatting is preserved when doing this. The caveat is Styles - are styles with the same name defined differently in the two documents? If so you have to decide whether the main document is to rule, or the importing styles get added with numeric suffixes (Heading becomes Heading01 if it is different from the original style Heading etc). If you really want to learn about DDL files this might be a way to learn - keep the two DDL files you have now, merge your documents as above and save the result as DDL. Compare files to see what has been added where and what has not been added because it was already in the main document. Hope this is some help. So there is such a thing as a pamphlet document, the master/template document I use whenever I want to create a pamphlet, is just that. One problem is that I sometimes need to insert just a couple of pages from doc to another, not a full chapter. For example, I sometimes have to produce a little booklet to send to publishers which explains the advertisement possibilities and rates for one of the academic journals we produce. In these I need to include a few sample pages or perhaps just a double-page spread from a recent issue of the journal. Our pages tend to include a range of placed objects - figures, captions, call outs etc - besides the principal frame, so using copy & paste is quite a pain. In another instance, we have produced a long document (about a thousand pages) as 15 smaller ones, but need to merge these as a single document for printing. We could do this, I guess at PS level if necessary, but this means that the slightest correction to a typo would mean redoing the whole thing. One thought I had was for a new 'View as thumbnails' function which allowed a view on screen of pages of the document. Groups of pages/chapters might be selectable from that view and then dragged and dropped into a different position in the document or into a different document. We could do with better thumbnails facilities anyway - it is an essential part of planning any magazine and it is currently quite a fiddle trying to print out thumbnails at the right scale and so that the double page spreads appear facing each other. We're almost there with 'View facing pages at 10%'. Could something be built on that? I suppose you can do select all, and copy everything on a page to the clip board. Everything except linked or master frames. This of course is the nub of the problem, you can't copy linked (or auto linked) frames, and if you could there would be no way of remaking the auto links when you pasted them back. >which allowed a view on screen of pages of the document. This would probably be the ideal - a page palette with icons that you could drag around. Sounds vaguely like other packages have. However you'd probably be talking about a months work - a simple scheme with copying chapters would probably only take a couple of days. And with any scheme that lets you copy pages, you have the obvious limit that you can only copy pages which have the same master page so that you can remake auto links. >We could do with better thumbnails facilities anyway If you're talking about printing these, then its just a matter of writing a new imposition script. The EndNotes applet used to be one culprit. I have all the different versions of OP in a sub-directory named DTP_new. I noticed there's no colour supplement in the demo. Does that mean i can't add any of the features of the colsup. into my document? I like to know if before i finish my folder, saves a lot trouble. grt -- _pP#y ' _ ;F _ ;F Steven M.
