I have recently printed a brochure with justified text, this has not been printed correctly as the justification has been lost when it was set to film from my OvnPro document. I am sure I have heard something about greyscales but can find nothing stored on my archives. Please forgive me if these have been discussed before. The only Applets I have loaded are Bullet List, Calculator and Smart Quotes. What is causing this error message and where can I find 'Specific'! 2) How can I set the print options so as to produce A5 pages side-by-side in landscape format, I can work the pamphlet option okay but do not always want the pages as in this layout. What I want is to have pages 1 and 2 on a sheet, 3 and 4 on the next sheet and so on. I have tried various settings but without success. 3) Is there any way (or any applet) that will do automatic numbering, so that if a number is inserted all following numbers automatically change. Imp Publisher had this as one of its' 'Insert' menu options. Can it be done with Ovation Pro? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with one or all of these. I regularly produce documents in the format you describe by using a style sheet set up as a landscape format with two A5 width columns (roughly, the margins and centre gutter obviously cut this down). When you created the PostScript files the 'Colour Correction' was probably turned on - unfortunately this will have caused the greyscale to have been separated across the process colour separations, so if you used a process colour for your spot colour then you may get this problem (which can also happen with Artworks / draw files and can cause blacks/greys to be made from the process colours). You must use a spot colour and switch off colour correction or set the greyscale duotone to black. It can cause problems if you need colour correction for a full colour sprite and have say an Artworks file with black & colour in it - you need colour correction on and off!! > 2. I have recently printed a brochure with justified text, this >has not been printed correctly as the justification has been lost >when it was set to film from my OvnPro document. There's a whole set of gotchas for justified printing depending on the printer driver, and the combination of justification and other effects like tracking, or letter spacing. I wonder if they're codified on the alt Opro web site FAQ. Certainly if you look you'll find it all in the archives. On the whole though it'd be a lot better if this info was much easier to come by, and if it was concluded what could be done about it or not. As in, I'm sure I reported some printer driver bugs to Acorn, and still nothing has been done about them... ;-) David Pilling -- email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.netlink.co.uk/users/pilling web: http://www.pilling.demon.co.uk post: David Pilling, P.O. If you look in your Applets directory, you will find the Ovation1 applet which is used to load old Ovation documents. You can find the mail list discussion in the 98/07 and 99/01 archives. It is not very illuminating though. Something you've done to OvationPro has left it trying to load the above file. It will be something to do with the applets directory. In the previous comment the suggestion that it is an applet installation program that leaves things in this state. Probably trashing the contents of the applets directory and starting over would be a crude but effective fix. >2) How can I set the print options so as to produce A5 pages side-by-side in >landscape format, I can work the pamphlet option okay but do not always want >the pages as in this layout. The !Server file in the OvationPro supplied TransLoaders won't work on RISC OS 4. It was written by Rob Clark, and I've been unable to find him... So I've had to rewrite this bit of code. The new version is available from; http://www.pilling.demon.co.uk/ovationpro/filelib/index.html Because its new, it probably has lots of new bugs and problems in it, which are going to have to be sorted out. Anyway if anyone is feeling brave, this is your chance to take part in testing it. The idea would be to replace the !Server in all your transloaders with this new one. Probably keeping a copy of the old !Server so that you can revert. You don't need to have RISC OS 4 to test this, because the one bug which makes the old code go wrong should not be present. Um. I have a hazy idea that some of the interaction between OPro and Impact can go via DDF files, transloaders and all that. The transloader problems with RISC OS 4 have been covered here recently. Two solutions have been offered - unprotect page 0 memory, or use the new !Server off the OPro web site in your transloaders. John Skingly mentioned some problems to me, if they're beyond the above comment, you're going to have to wait until I have ROS4 working on my machine. I'd imagine that with just about every crash you see using ROS4 the page 0 memory fix will be worth trying. I have now tried both the new version of !Server and unprotecting zero page. I have also tried mail merging via an intermediate CSV file, and have checked that TransDDF's Boot and Run files are amended in line with the instructions in the new mail merge document. In all cases, Ovation Pro (v2.51) dies instantly with a type = 5 error. If I start out with Ovation Pro booted but not loaded, then an attempted mail merge will load the program and the document but with the merge tags stubbornly in place; any attempt to use a dialogue box to encourage the merge to take place causes the program to fall over again. I suppose I could try upgrading to v2.52 but then, as you say, I'll just have to wait for you to get RISC OS 4 working on your machine. It would be interesting to know if anyone with RO4 has mail merge working, as it would imply that I should persevere a little longer. -- Dr Angus Mackenzie angus@romsley.demon.co.uk Consultant Anaesthetist Acorn RiscPC user This is not a tagline. If I have a directory for 'Eric' (EFF's Gill) it might contain the following: (Regular) Bold Bold.Italic Cond Cond.Bold Cond.Ultrabold Extrabold Italic Light Light Italic Ultrabold At present, applying 'Bold' style to roman gives Bold (correct) but applying Bold to 'Cond' or gives the same result. Removing italic from Light.Italic gives roman etc. At present I have to invent new directories for font subsets (such as 'EricLight') but I still seem to get caught out at times. The really frustrating thing is that I've now tried so many different font directory structures in an attempt to find one which works, that most of our older documents won't now load without screwing up the fonts. Is there a structure which works and whixh has still eluded me? At least for "Bold" and "Italic" IMHO the only solution is using the "standard" RISC OS fontmenu with it's flexibility for handling typefaces containing just one weight to faces with xx weights. And you always get what you want. In the early days typeface-families contained only 4 weights. Even early EFF-fonts were named eg. Swiss1 (Regular, Bold, Oblique, Bold Oblique) and Swiss 2 (Light, Black, Light Oblique, Black Oblique). Only in such a situation it make sense to use a "button structure" for toggling between a Regular, Bold, Slanted and Bold-Slanted weight. Yes, even the name Italic for everything "Slanted" is misleading. Now a days more and more fonts contain more and more weights with more and more different weight names not only mentioning the actual weight (eg. Light) or style (eg. Italic), but also names like Inline, 31A etc. etc. My pledge is to stick to the flexibility of the RISC OS fontmenu structure, and even banning all the buttons which call upon different weights. Try Publisher: choose a font like Homerton.Oblique. Next choose the button "Italic". Here on purpose, while working sometimes by mistake. Type a little text. Choose a different style. Save you document and reopen it. Create a "font usage list" and you can see entries like Homerton.Oblique.Italic. Yes, it does have a leading *, so Publisher corrects its own/yours mistake. But the example illustrates a weird construction you can accomplish. And if such a contruction would not be corrected and has to be mapped to PostScript, I can imagine a lot of trouble ... May I therefore ask all readers of this mailing list to send to me directly ( email: janvredenb@access.ch ) all comments and/or corrections that you ever sent to Beebug or J.Wallace or Ian MacDougall regarding corrections on the OvPro manual. May I ask that you present this info as follows: - state page number, chapter nr and section nr. - state main topic - eventually state what wording needs correcting and then state the correct wording (example: wordz m/b words, nife m/b knife, etc.) - or simply state what additional text should be included or changed. **And please do not change the subject of these mailings.** This way we can give David Pilling more time for programming OvPro and we all get an up-to-date manual. Do not worry, the new manual on disc will be in A4 format giving an excellent "pamphlet" sized print. Any other suggestions will be gratefully accepted. Fonts. Complicated. All that history, trays of metal blocks and messy ink. These computer thingies seem to have streched the metaphore without enabl= ing usage. Actually, until I read about the problems here in this mailing lis= t - regarding defining what the bold button does when faced with modern font families - I had didn't know about the problem myself. Well, I've had an idea. The next time font systems come up for revision m= aybe it'll be useful. Here it is: Font families need to have routes defined in them. Each specific weight needs=A0a list of pointers. These pointers are called... More bold Less Bold More Italic Less Italic ....and each would either point to the weight which produces that effect o= r is 'null' to indicate that that idea is not representable. For example, the = font 'Europe' might be defined as follows... Europe (regular) More Bold =3D> Europe.Bold Less Bold =3D> More Italic =3D> Europe.Oblique Less Italic =3D> Europe.Bold More Bold =3D> Less Bold =3D> Europe (regular) More Italic =3D> Europe.Bold.Oblique Less Italic =3D> Europe.Bold.Oblique More Bold =3D> Less Bold =3D> Europe.Oblique More Italic =3D> Less Italic =3D> Europe.Bold Europe.Oblique More Bold =3D> Europe.Bold.Oblique Less Bold =3D>=20 More Italic =3D> Less Italic =3D> Europe (regular) A font that has more than one wieght of boldness can be defined, let's ca= ll it 'Cloud' so that...=20 Cloud (regular) More Bold =3D> Cloud.Demi Less Bold =3D> More Italic =3D> Cloud.Italic Less Italic =3D> Cloud.Demi (Half bold) More Bold =3D> Cloud.Bold Less Bold =3D> Cloud (regular) More Italic =3D> Cloud.Demi.Italic Less Italic =3D> Cloud.Bold (Full bold) More Bold =3D> Cloud.Black Less Bold =3D> Cloud.Demi More Italic =3D> Cloud.Bold.Italic Less Italic =3D> Cloud.Black (Double bold) More Bold =3D> Less Bold =3D> Cloud.Bold More Italic =3D> Cloud.Black.Italic Less Italic =3D> Cloud.Bold.Italic More Bold =3D> Cloud.Black.Italic Less Bold =3D> Cloud.Italic More Italic =3D>=20 Less Italic =3D> Cloud (regular) (other italc & italic/bold/black/demi weights omitted, but you can imagin= e) One could take this to extremes for effects and have... Trinity.Bold More Bold =3D> Homerton.Bold Or use some kind of encoding to define... Trinity.Bold.Italic More Bold =3D> Trinity.Bold.Italic + 50% to Font aspect ratio=20 >From the user's point of view all these things are chosen using Bold and Italic 'buttons' that also have a +1 or -1 indicator (or +2 or -2 etc). I envisage that these definitions can be incorperated into styles to over= ride the font's own definitions for effects. I suppose a fix could be made whereby OvationPro defines these tables of pointers for itself in the programme choices allowing the user to=20 redefine them if they see fit to do so. OK. Well, someone store this idea away where it can easily be got it if it's needed. Thats really what is at issue, the algorithm OPro should use to automatically arrange the fonts degrees of boldness etc. I suppose having a table would at least be preferable to starting renaming fonts. Something like Acorn DTP (remember that?) did have a table of font names. In general relying on such a table is not acceptable for most users. As to having a degree of boldness other than zero or one. Short term thats not on, and it would be interesting to know if everyone would find the concept an improvement or not. Currently selecting bold is a toggle, if the text is already bold it is made normal, not more bold. One snag that has occured to me is this, if you have text in font (A) and select bold, then another font is used (B). I wonder if it is always the case in Impression (etc) that when font B is in use and bold is selected again text returns to font A. In other words just because B is the bold variation of A, it isn't necessarily true that A is the non-bold variation of B. In Impression Pub one toggles Bold by the button or Ctrl-B, or sets it by specifically choosing a bold version of the font from the font list. Experience and brief experiments just now indicate that reverting to non-bold from bold usually does go back to the correct font. One complication is the is the inconsistent way the font name is /displayed/. Using Trinity as an example (whose light and bold versions are called Medium and Bold), with Trinity.Medium showing, toggling by the button or Ctrl-B does not change the displayed name to Trinity.Bold; selecting Trinity.Bold from the font list 'presses' the Bold button but leaves Trinity.Medium showing. However with AvantGarde (whose light and bold versions are called BOOK and DEMI), the button and Ctrl-B work the same way when BOOK is displayed but changing via the font list from AvanteGarde.BOOK to AvanteGarde.DEMI does not show the Bold button depressed. In other words, with the latter selected you cannot go back to BOOK using the button or Ctrl-B. I have got used to these IPub foibles by now but OvPro needs to do it better :-) Brian. -- ______________________________________________________________ Brian Carroll, Ripon, North Yorkshire, UK bric@argonet.co.uk ______________________________________________________________ -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From jeremy@omba.demon.co.uk Fri Aug 13 22:11:49 1999 Received: from punt-21.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA101710 for opro ; Fri, 13 Aug 99 22:11:47 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 934575474:20:26438:1; Fri, 13 Aug 99 20:17:54 GMT Received: from finch-post-12.mail.demon.net ([194.217.242.41]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2026396; 13 Aug 99 20:17 GMT Received: from omba.demon.co.uk ([158.152.58.5]) by finch-post-12.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 2.12 #1) id 11FNls-000PtE-0C for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk; Fri, 13 Aug 1999 20:17:49 +0000 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Jeremy C B Nicoll To: David Pilling Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 21:06:44 +0100 Subject: Fonts - bold, italic and big families Message-ID: <4931196518Jeremy@omba.demon.co.uk> User-Agent: Pluto/1.12b (RISC-OS/3.70) Content-Type: text/plain On 13 Aug, David Pilling wrote: > Thats really what is at issue, the algorithm OPro should use to > automatically arrange the fonts degrees of boldness etc. Discussion here seems to centre around how other Acorn DTP software works but the problem must be a bit more widespread than that! The idea is that a new OPro manual is odds on only ever likely to appear on disc. If you want a paper copy you'll have to print it and most people have A4 printers. At the moment the plan is to adopt an A4 page size, so that it can either be printed out as A4 or as an A5 pamphlet (yes using scaling). One advantage of this is that it makes the pages slightly bigger than in the existing manual, so there's room for some additions. Adopting A5 would make the pages slightly smaller, and probably require a lot of work. As of now though its an open question, if anyone has a good reason why any one size should be chosen, let us know. I'm not totally ruling out a printed version, however the printer I asked also voted in favour of a move to A4. It happens to be very useful to have a style button, though, because of the way that bold and italics have become used in modern typography and, even more so perhaps, in 'postmodern' typography where weights and italics may change within words. Second, is the problem in establishing an algorithm mainly related to bold rather than italic? Are there any faces that have relative degrees of italicness? Or alternatives between oblique and italic? If so, they must be rare. From my own point of view, it is the italic style which is much more important to have as an effect rather than bold. (Largely because I have to set a great many academic bibliographical references where titles are set in italic). I would be happy enough, I think, if italic were treated in a binary fashion and bold in a different way - allowing me, for example, to use Gill regular as the 'bold' equivalent of 'light' or 'book'. Well the normal pamphlet printing option automaticly changes to 71% even when I use a double A5 masterpage to make a folded A4 pamphlet. Not everyone uses A4 masterpages to create double A5 pamphlets ;-) I don't know if it is possible to auto-adjust the scale to the given printermargins and papersize when you click on pamphlet printing. On the other hand, that's where fit comes in. -- / Steven M.
