It should be possible to add a macro if indeed the OP program has a script language definition for the total amount of pages. And the total amount of pages is to be found when pressing . So somehow OP does seem to know the total amount of pages. But I cannot find anything either in the manual nor in the 'NewFuncts' file (12 Jun 1997). I'm sure they'd tell you they were just trying to recoup some of their investment. On the whole Beebug have had about 78% of the income from OPro, enough to show a profit, but not a vast one. Had we sold 1000 copies a year then that would have been OK. Had we sold 2000 copies a year then everything would have been great, Beebug would have full time staff working on OPro, I'd be working on it full time and it would no doubt be a very good program. The trouble starts at 200 copies a year. Where effectively I do everything, programming, support, testing, design and the deal with Beebug gives them most of the income. So times have moved on, and we're left high and dry. I've pointed out before that until things change the position is untenable. Beebug however want the 'status quo'. This of course will gradually kill off the program. To give a simple example the drawing system only works to 32,000 OS units, go beyond that size and it wraps around. This problem is in every version of RISC OS, and nothing to do with the window manager. Because the screen size is never close to these limits, it would be possible to rewrite the program not to suffer from this problem. However above you're talking about 'multiple icon bars' I don't know what those are. Whilst we might have to pay Beebug because of an 'old' contract (between Beebug and David Pilling) which is no longer appropriate to the current situation, there is nothing stopping us from sending some money to David as well. Of course you may think that you are paying for the same thing twice (once to David - where you get some value, and then to Beebug - where you seem to be paying for nothing) but that seems to me to be the nature of the situation. Another possibility is that those of us with Ovation who want David to keep it up and running (with the sort of support only he and not Beebug can give) might consider clubbing together and buying David out of his contract with Beebug. This would mean a lump sum from every user who wants to 'join the club'. Perhaps David could find out how much Beebug want to terminate his contract with them and then we could register (with David) our 'provisional' interest. David could then divide the amount Beebug want by the number who have said they are interested and let us know the size of the bill each of us would face. Then we have to make the decision whether to 'join the club' or not. Of course, once David is free from his onerous contract with Beebug those who have 'joined the club' should get their upgrades (directly from David) at a price which is lower than those who did not 'join'. As I see the overall situation either we get together and pay David one way or another (if necessary paying Beebug as well) or David will have to stop work on Ovation. I have anoather suggestion and that is to find a somebody who will write a 'new' DTP which will allow the import of Ovation files. We could finance that somebody to write the program and we, not Beebug, would own it! It would be nice if that somebody had access to (and some sort of licence to use) Ovation code in the 'new' DTP. I don't know to what extent Beebug 'own' the rights to the Ovation code but it might be cheaper for the 'club' to buy some rights to it than to buy David out of his current contract. I have no doubts whom I would choose to be that 'somebody' who writes the successor to Ovation. It seems to me that this discussion is premature, anyway. I think that Beebug did not really believe that RISCOS Ltd would fly, and that the Acorn platform was doomed. It may be that they are now having second thoughts: certainly Risc User vol 12 issue 1 seems to be pointing in two directions at once. Anyway if RISCOS Ltd and the other developments are a success, then Ovation will have a future. On the other hand if the platform dies, is there any point in making long term plans? OvPro is perfectly usable as it is and will last out our current machines. It is unreasonable to expect David to put effort into something that has no future. But personally I am optimistic. It is not much of a secret that RISCOS Ltd are already coming up against the Finance Act limit of 50 investors. There are plenty of people who *do* still believe RISCOS has a future. If so, then either Beebug will return to the fold, or can be persuaded to sell their software to someone who wants to develop it. You want to know why new Acorn programs appear like a comet and then go 'phut'?, I've explained. >there is nothing stopping us from sending some money to David Please don't (if anyone was thinking of). >might consider clubbing together and buying David out of his contract with Beebug I tried doing that and they were not interested. >I have anoather suggestion and that is to find a somebody who >will write a 'new' DTP which will allow the import of Ovation >files. this is one of the things I hoped I'd explained. *I* could produce a new DTP program (it might not take me 5 years this time). I could hire some legal people and escape from the agreement with Beebug. The point is that there aren't enough interested people in the 'Acorn' world. Putting in new large amounts of time and money doesn't make sense. Had Beebug seen the reality of the situation and gone along amicably with me taking over the program, that would have been viable. But to say you're going to go and spend 6 months and an undefined amount of money on forcing Beebugs hand legally. Or to spend a year rewriting the program is just not on. I do have one other insight, this is that what the Acorn world really wants is 'Impression'. No surprise, its been in use for a long time, people are accustomed to it. I would say that our biggest mistake was to not have just copied Impression or at the very least to have supported loading Impression files. One of the most common reactions when I was writing OPro was "oh good, that will make CC improve Impression". So Gerald, thats where you should be concentrating your attempts on taking over a DTP program. Yes, you will need !HForm v2.50, but also some partitioning software. For the latter, which /may/ do the formatting as well, look at Dave Clare's web site which I believe is at http://www.stcoll.ac.uk/clares/ I believe Alsystems at http://alsystems.co.uk/ may have partioning software too (ExtendedADFS). Unfortunately, he only worked two days a week, so it took a while. The promised updates never materialised. Back in the early days of the internet I bought a modem from them - which wouldn't work. Neither would the replacement(s). I found out that there was a batch of USR modems that would just /not/ work on Acorn machines, and Beebug had bought the lot. After an extremly unpleasant telephone conversation with Sheridam Williams, they finally agreed to a refund - but only because I was going to take it to the shop and get them to demonstrate it working, which of course they couldn't. One of their tech support guys was honest enough to admit that they had bought duff stock, which had been returned, but they were being sticky with customers that had bought from them. Not a nice firm to do business with, but unfortunately the only plave I could get OP when it first came out. I would guess almost certainly "yes" for two reasons: 1) If it where easy someone would have done it by now. 2) I suspect the Impression save format and quite possibly the OPro save format as well are simply memory dumps of the document as stored by the program. Therefore, to perform a conversion you have to understand every neuance of the program which created it. Remember where not talking about converting HTML where all the special commands are nicely delimited by container characters. You really have to know how many bytes each command will take to be able to parse it and there is absolutely no room for error. -- (\/)atthew Hambley --------------\ "Tell me what you know or I'll pee in \ your ear!" snowyowl@therealm.freeserve.co.uk \ - Gaspode interogates a Gargoyle http://www.therealm.freeserve.co.uk \------------------------------------- -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Tue Apr 6 19:31:22 1999 Received: from punt-11.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA92783 for opro ; Tue, 06 Apr 99 19:31:21 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 923155677:10:19018:17; Sat, 03 Apr 99 16:07:57 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id aa1018797; 3 Apr 99 16:07 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.8.6/8.8.6) id QAA16508 for ovationpro-list; Sat, 3 Apr 1999 16:54:42 +0100 Received: from finch-post-10.mail.demon.net (finch-post-10.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.38]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.8.6/8.8.6) with ESMTP id QAA16503 for ; Sat, 3 Apr 1999 16:54:30 +0100 Received: from [158.152.73.37] (helo=spcap.demon.co.uk) by finch-post-10.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 2.12 #1) id 10TSlq-0006yU-0A for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Sat, 3 Apr 1999 15:55:42 +0000 Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 16:54:56 +0100 (BST) From: Stephen Parkin Subject: Re: Future of Ovation To: OvationPro List In-Reply-To: <92763@pilling.demon.co.uk> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII X-Organization: Home X-Mailer: ANT RISCOS Marcel [ver 1.46] Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro Status: R In on Sat 03 Apr, David Pilling wrote: > Anyone want to sell me a StrongArm copy of Publisher Plus? I know they must have wanted an enormous amount of money for the Impression source in the past - or was that the Artworks story? - but surely its "value" must be decreasing over time. Though I also wonder if the above plan would be economically viable at this point - it would probably have made more sense at the beginning of OPro's creation. Perhaps it's another of these things which has to wait for signs of success or otherwise of RISCOS Ltd, and Beebugs reaction.
