From OP it's always worked a treat. Ok, I did think it was some sort of miracle the 1st time, but now... So passe. What he did (& he can correct me if he's reading this) is just borrow all the feed defs from the maufacturers set (for the PC), add in eg %%RISCOS_FeedName: A3 duplex at the beginning and shove them all in ps.Feeds(as you suggest).Xerox. So, voila, 14 different feed definitions. The pdf seems fairly generic, bar the addition of obvious lines such as - feed_choices: Printers:ps.Feeds.Xerox - at the end. After the event, of course, it all seems blindingly simple, and as I said, OP hasn't stuttered once. Publisher though... But who cares. The problem is colour printing on my Epson Stylus Color 600. I have installed the printer driver for the StylusColor600 from the Acorn User CD-ROM (200th issue) but colour printing is 'odd'. By this I mean that the printer doesn't seem to be printing yellow from RiscOS (cyan and black print alright, not sure about magneta tho). But... running Windows95 from my PC partition does print alright so I know the problem is localised to RiscOS (and not just Ovation Pro). Does anybody know the cause of this problem, or even better, a way to fix it? I also have twin Iomega Zip100 parallel drives attached. I have only one Zip drive attached! - but have really excellent results including totally convincing photoreal printouts as good as the results from Windows (spit)! Drop the AU200 Epson 600 Printer driver, its wrong/faulty, and out of date (it doesn't have 1440 microweave settings for instance) and get and use the the one (May 1997) from Xemplars site, Don't ask why Acorn are still providing very unsatisfactory Epson Stylus Color printer drivers - when correct better ones are available 'next door'. Using a Master Page with Headers and Footers set, single page A4, single chapter, although that makes no difference, when I change the text in the Header area and close the Master Page I get only some of the pages being updated. Usually the last one or two at the end of the doc, seems to depend upon where pages have been added. The rest of the document has the old Headers, but no matter what I do with the Master Page it will not correct the rest of the document. The only way to get the document to appear correct is to insert as many new pages as there are in the document at the start and then delete the ones that appear blank at the end. Why do the blank pages not get deleted automatically, down goes to the last true page and every page after is useless, no input cursor. Also, if there is a spelling error in the header the checker goes through every page one by one - there is only one error, and thats on the Master Page ! Also, at times I cannot use the paste board or C or V on the Master Page or enter any text in the Header Area, unless I close the Master Page and re-open it again. Seems to be some confusion, hope this explanation helps. The way I work, I am continually adding, moving and editing text, changing styles - until I am fully content with the document. There seems to be far less problems if I just import text and then set styles. More type 5 exits from version 2.51 - when editing styles. Caret seems to get lost, after using the spell checker. Try, - http://www.xemplar.co.uk/ftp/index.html - for PDF 'StyCol600' I wasn't blaming Acorn, as they wrote these excellent drivers for a printer that was still quite state of the art at the beginning of this year, and they did these revised drivers (file dated May 15th 1997) the original Epson PDF's supplied have been much improved to provide the higher resolution colour 720 and 1440dpi microweave printing options. But why are the older incorrect versions still being provided? Tips for all who want best results from their Epson Stylus Color 600/700 printers: - do install the palette files. - !Printers 1.53/1.54 will only offer error diffused quality options, not halftones, because the latter are not recommended by Epson. - do use only special glossy coated paper for 1440x720dpi Microweave photo realistic prints - Viking Direct's Gloss coated Ink Jet paper 140 gsm, is very satisfactory and not *too* expensive. - do use coated paper for 720dpi and everything where you're looking for bright, deep colours 'R de Ray' 100gsm coated, from Staples is very good. - 360x360 microweave is excellent for general purpose colour and B&W and quality text printing, coated paper again for preference. - don't use 720dpi without microweave, the mode is broken (and was not too sensible anyway!) the printout will be corrupted! - Do run the Epson self test once a week if the printer has not been used, helps to prevent clogged jets. We don't produce printer drivers (currently anyway). Obviously AU put an old one on the CD. Thats part of the reason why Acorn have lost money. In the light of Acorn's dropping the workstation group I would not be surprised if they don't ever produce any more pdfs. It would be prudent for people to propagate this caution because I get bitterly disappointed customers every week saying they have bought a new printer and "where are the Acorn drivers?". > The foregoing also applies to the 700 model, and probably applies to the > newest 640 and 740 models for which there are no drivers listed. The hardware in the HP DeskJet 1200 is special. Thats why there is no pdf for it. Actually the 1200 is quite old. HP's equivalent new ones are the 1120C (A3/A4), 1150C (Fax), 1600 (A4). There are no pdfs for these but some may work with pdfs for other HP printers although features may be limited. When the master pages were closed, only the first chapter was updated correctly. The second and third chapters appeared to not only lose their footers, but the first page became "uneditable". I messed around, and by inserting a page at the start of the chapter and then deleting it again, things appeared to correct themselves, and the document seems ok again. I have had these occasional odditities but nothing that is repeatable. -- Chris Johnson mailto: C.A.Johnson@hw.ac.uk (at work) mailto: Chris@bulldog.u-net.com (at home) ovpro web site http://www1.che.hw.ac.uk/~ovpro/ -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Fri Nov 6 13:47:09 1998 Received: from punt-21.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA82730 for opro ; Fri, 06 Nov 98 13:47:07 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 910349523:20:02075:48; Fri, 06 Nov 98 10:52:03 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa2102148; 6 Nov 98 10:51 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.8.6/8.8.6) id KAA11576 for ovationpro-list; Fri, 6 Nov 1998 10:02:52 GMT Received: from pp.hw.ac.uk (pp@pp.hw.ac.uk [137.195.151.253]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.8.6/8.8.6) with ESMTP id KAA11570 for ; Fri, 6 Nov 1998 10:02:40 GMT Received: from isambard.che.hw.ac.uk by pp.hw.ac.uk with SMTP(trusted); Fri, 6 Nov 1998 10:01:33 +0000 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Chris Johnson To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Date: Fri, 06 Nov 1998 10:00:12 +0000 (GMT) Message-ID: <48a0afcd77C.A.Johnson@isambard.che.hw.ac.uk> X-Mailer: Pluto 1.09k for RISC OS 3.7 Subject: Re: Page # of # In-Reply-To: <364281FA.231A@net.ntl.com> Content-Type: text/plain Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro In article <364281FA.231A@net.ntl.com>, > We really need a FAQs list, this is the fourth or fifth time I've > posted this - I know how David P must feel at times. Anyway, the output amazed me (output came from a PC), it was like a magazine, especially using the shiny paper. I hadn't realized how far these colour ink jets had come in the last few years (I've got an HP DJ 560C which is pretty crappy in comparison). Anyway, I'd like one now and was wondering if you lot could recommend the best of these new breed of colour ink jets which has a DECENT ACORN DRIVER!!! (i.e. comparable to the output you'd get from the PC). By "best" I mean a colour A4 inkjet which is under 300pounds having at least the quality if this Epson that I saw. It doesn't have to be one of the Epson's, it just happened to be the printer that "opened my eyes". Sorry for this being a bit off topic but I was truly amazed when I saw it and really want to get one now (one that I can plug into my hub and use Omni print and also print from my PC would be good but not essential). Open blank default document. Check file size, about 24k. Construct a frame on the page and drop a graphic in. Check file size, about 4.6Mb (its a 24 bit sprite). Change your mind, and drop a different version of the graphic into the same frame. The old graphic is overwritten by the new graphic. Check file size, its now about 9.3Mb. OK - still not happy with the graphic. Drop a third version in to the same frame. Still only one picture in document, but file size is now 14Mb. Now comes the crunch. Delete the graphic frame. We now have a blank document, but it still has a file size of 14Mb. Saving and reloading does not change this. These deleted graphics are still in the apparently blank document. I realised this was happening yesterday, when my Syquest SyJet, which is usually pretty nippy, seemed to be getting far slower than a floppy disc, when I was making changes to some slides I was making up for a lecture. You can get the genuine blank document back by saving as a DDL file. Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon, or am I doing something stupid, as I often do, because I tend not to RTFM. For the 'photo' styluses you need special drivers (I think Spacetech). for our own use we have the Stylus 3000 A2 printer (which used to be the 1520) both are excellent!) Does this mean that, if one is editing several documents at the same time, as I regularly do, then a huge graphic sitting on the clipboard from one document, could get saved with another document which has never had a graphic near it? There is an option somewhere to turn this off. Also the clipboard (cut & paste buffer) can get saved with the file So the last thing deleted will be here as well. There is also a command somewhere to clear all these out (minimise memory?) to release space. Mine is set to 16K. I sort >of assumed this was a maximum value. I think there's a note about this in the manual. You have an undo buffer of the size you specify. Sometimes things are saved in that memory. For example if you delete a word that is 4 letters long then maybe 32 bytes of undo buffer will be used. However other things are saved by reference. So when you delete a picture, maybe 32 bytes are used as a pointer to the old picture. So you've now used 32 bytes of undo space, but 10Mb of image is still in memory. The whole undo system was open to a lot of debate. We could have let you specify how many steps back you wanted to go. But I don't see that making the memory limit apply to referenced objects would have been particularly useful. Few bit maps would fit inside 16K. > Also the clipboard (cut & paste buffer) can get saved with the file > So the last thing deleted will be here as well. This is not correct as far as I know. Sorry for this being a bit off topic but I was truly amazed when > I saw it and really want to get one now (one > that I can plug into my hub and use Omni print and also print from my > PC would be good but not essential). I've been using the STylus color 800 for over a year now with very good results from the Acorn driver. Printing at 1440 dpi onto the correct papers produces highly satisfying copy from Photdesk, etc. I tried printing the same files from the pc card, but whilst quicker, the results were less impressive. More recently I bought the Epson Photo EX in order to get A3 output (there is an A4 version too), which with the Spacetech driver is even better (well it does use 6 colours), very subtle. But even at 720 dpi on the correct papers you can get nice results fron the Stylus 400, which my sister uses on an A3010. It does seem that the Epson range have the better technology for photoreal printing and the printer drivers available for Risc OS can do the job well. To the limited extent that I'm competent to comment on the copy protection, I think you have to install a new 2.46 from the original discs on your new HD, with this token on your disc, you may then find that your copied 2.51 also works - if not then you have to patch the 2.46 back to 2.51. I guess your comment may explain previous postings here about reinstallation. Maybe the installer won't work on patched copies... A way to do this would be as follows: Produce the draw file which you want to use to crop the picture, say black text on a white (NOT transparent) background which you use to crop the sprite image into the text shape. Load the draw file with text into Ovation Pro. Go to 'Picture->Process' and set 'duotone' setting the upper colour to white (A white background) and the Lower colour (Black) to 'Transparent'. This makes the black text in the original draw file transparent allowing you to see through it to the sprite image which you place below, making sure your picture frames are set to transparent. All is well and good except for one thing - the 'transparent' colour isn't. Instead, it appears white so the draw file covers the sprite image completely. The frame containing the draw file is transparent as I can see the sprite through the edges, but anywhere the draw file is just becomes white, or whatever upper colour I have with a white hole cut into it. I have tried this with both sprite and draw files and the effect is the same, however, when a draw file contains transparency (ie no object) the image below is seen with no problems. OP 2.50 RO3.11 Is the 256 colour pallete in Risc OS 3.11 of significance? Is transparency supposed to work in duotone (or is it like the text background colour where IIRC 'background transparent' means the same colour as the rest of the frame?) I'm not looking for a way to show the effect of linked frames, I know how to do that, it was just to illustrate my thoughts. I want really linked frames and complex irregular frames (who are easier to make in draw, artworks and in the future vantage) therefore I need a way to use draw figures direct as frames. Two things has to be made possible. -link frames for figures -import draw as frame I think the main point is the complexity. You can make draw figures with bitmaps etc in it and to convert that into a frame is impossible. But to avoid those complex situations someone can maybe make a filter that allows only drawfiles with one vectorshape in it to convert to frames. David Pilling made the suggestion to convert draw files to ddl files and use the shapes as frames, that is a way, not the most beautiful one to convert draw into frames (you can copy and paste the frames into other documents). It would be nicer to directly drag and drop draw into an ovation pro and convert it into a frame. I'm not the best programmer I have to admit so i do not have the abbilities to do it myself, maybe someone around? -- X X | Steven M.
