If you write a paragraph consisting only of a single short line which included tab(s) within it and set the para to right justified, then everything after the last tab becomes justified right and everything else to the left. i.e One line of text date becomes One line of text date I found ths very convenient for producing certain types of headers etc. (although the centre justify might have been the more logical *if* this were planned). This is the type of thing best done in an app that allows more control of individual elements ie Draw or Artworks. I think if you could do this with publisher then you were just lucky, I doubt it was designed for that. Make the table in !Draw and put it in its own frame in OPro. Its then easily editable with OLE. One of the great benefits of RISC OS is the ability to use many progs at the same time and save data between them. Theres not much point spending time making OPro do something !Draw does so well already. Nya, well, it *is* easier than fooling around with an extra frame for the "date" bit which text must be vertically aligned to the "One line of text" bit, tricky without "lock to grid" in basestyle. You could do that. But I thought the original poster wanted lines of text, each with their own backgroud colour, so there would be horizontal white gaps in the tinted area. You would have to have lots of frames, amd moving, evenly positioning, editing etc would be difficult. Also is easier to accurately control the size of the tinted line the text sits on in a drawing prog. If you make an OPro frame too small the text in it disappears, also its not easy to optically centre the text vertically in the frame. The problem is, I then cannot reposition the caret within the text without either first; deselecting the object frame with adjust, or clicking select within another object frame that isn't already selected or clicking with select outside the main master frame area. If I select a group of objects then as long the first object was selected with the select button then I have no problems reposisitioning the caret but if all the objects in the group are selected with the adjust button then the same problems are encountered. David's recent message seems to imply that I could have got it before by editing printchoices. Is there anywhere a list of what printchoices does? 2 On importing RTF files, it worked for me. I think I had the filetype set to Text, but I'm not absolutely sure. (As I recall, the filters are in the Applets folder.) 3 There seems to be something odd about the display of printable area when the paper is set scaled. To explain: I set up a newsletter to use A4 sheets, pamphlet printing, and the scale was automatically set to 71%. I used this for some time, cursing the large left margin imposed by my bubblejet printer. (By margin here, I mean the area *shown* as unprintable on the left of the paper - it turned out that a lot of it was printable.) Recently I got fed up with having the text scaled down, and decided to change the layout to A5 pages, pamphlet, scale 100%. This magically reduced the left margin dramatically. I still have a problem, in that the displayed centre of the page is not where the paper folds in half - the error is about 2mm. I suspect that this is to do with the paper definition, but I haven't been aboe to investigate fully yet. Yes I realise this, but what I was trying to say in the original post was, that if I select an object frame with adjust, OP refuses to allow me to reposition the caret within the main text using select, without first deselecting that object frame. The one thing I had overlooked when I wrote the question was, since I was in the process of editing text, the master frame was already selected, thus accidentally clicking with adjust in an object frame created a multiple selection of frames. I now realise that my problem of not being able to reposition the caret within the text of the master frame, was because the master frame was already part of a multiple selection of frames. Now why didn't I realise this in the first place? Very interesting... I have exactly the same problems with margins. I am running OVPro 2.46 on a RiscPC with 50Mb ram, 2Mb vram, 10GB storage on 4 discs & StrongArm @ 202MHz. No problems with install or operation, just some aggro at the margin settings. I have just completed a 60 page book, which is set in A5 with selections for mirror, double & pamphlet, and when printed on my HP LJIIP+ produces a large margin at one side of the page. I can compensate somewhat but it is still unbalalnce no matter what I do and curioiusly the centre settinga are as ALAN ADAMS describes... The printer settings from OVPro are sideways, centre, fit etc all set on. I am contemplating setting all the system printer driver paper settings to 0 and then making all my settings in OVPro. I have discovered that many printers will actually achieve a much closer margin setting than the software lets it, for example: HP claim in their handbook that an LJ series laser needs 10mm at the lower end of the page with a 5mm margin aroung the other 3 sides. In fact the laser will print to 5mm on the lower side as well. Any thoughts on how to achieve better margin settings welcome.. What else can I do. Nigel J.E.Adams BBPG - Preservation for the future! To set up my margins I set them all to zero, then in !Draw I made a 20% grey rectangle that bleeds off all four sides and printed it (you can leave the middle of the rectangle unfilled to use less ink). I then measured the white margins and set them in the printer driver. It seems to work perfectly for all applications I print from. If you are concerned about different apps behaving differently you could do this for each and set up an A4 page with customised margins for each application you print from. I suspect they would all come out the same though. In my PS driver (used only for making PS files), all the paper margins are set to zero. I have used this method for several years, since I discovered the default margin settings in some Acorn drivers were wrong. This is not surprising, as I have discovered instances where the margins stated in the printer manual were wrong. Indeed, from newsgroup correspondence, it seems that different specimens of the same printer may have different margins. It is therefore always best to /measure/ the margins yourself. If you want to print to the extremes of the printable area, it is as well also to study the precision with which the paper is fed into the printer. One of my 2 printers needs an extra mm or so on the side margins to be sure, and the other has about the same error in the vertical direction. Rather than increasings the margins set in !Printers to allow for the worst-case feed errors, you can of course make the allowance when laying out the page in your application. > It seems to work perfectly for all applications I print from. > If you are concerned about different apps behaving differently you > could do this for each and set up an A4 page with customised > margins for each application you print from. I suspect they would > all come out the same though. Yes of course they will, because applications all pick up the grey margins that they display from !Printers. This is why it is worth going to some trouble to get !Printers set up correctly, and why it is best always to select the printer you are going to use for the final print and to set it up as you want it before laying out your page or drawing, even if you do trial prints on some other printer. If a 2" margin is set and shown, but the mechanical margin is only 1", the output print will be clipped /by the driver/ (as you say) at 2". If a 1/2" margin is set rather than 2", the output will be clipped /by the printer/ at 1". This is why it is so important to get the /real/ printable margins set up correctly. > I suppose that saves getting ink on the rollers, but it is often > unecessarily limiting. See my reply to Kevin's posting. It need not be limiting, but it can be if the interaction between !Printers and applications is misunderstood, as it seems frequently to be. IMHO, it is not a good idea to mess about with the margin settings in !Printers to give the desired margin in the application, as I believe some people do; much better to use the latter, eg a master page (or a temporary box in !Draw), to limit the printed area. From: Hi We in the Acorn World are very fortunate because our computers are easy to program and the operating system is virtually bug free and very consistent. There is also an unfortunate side to all this. Anyone who has access to a PC cannot fail to be impressed by the quality and value of software such as Microsoft Office 97 etc. Many of these programs give full control over a web site, perhaps I ought to explain that statment. We have been asking David (pilling) for quite some time about a HTML converter for Ovation Pro. Using for example, Microsoft Office, gives you full control of a Web Site and not just a conversion of the document that you have created to be a text file. This will include relevant conversion of image format, Automatic link creation, and of course it will upload the whole file so that you can have your site up and running straight away. I dont mean to belittle David and Ovation Pro, its my first choice anyday, but how can one man create a monster program (and I mean monster in every sense of the word!) like MS Office, when Beebug expect him to offer telephone and online support as well as looking after the mailing list when what he shoulld actually be doing is maintaining his excellant program. Yes I am intrested in any program that will enhance my RISCPc and will do my utmost to support and encourage all developers. Keep up the good work. It is not clear from your posting whether the Selwyn bullet has been converted into these bar characters, or whether they are additional characters generated. I assume the bullet style you have set up does not specify a particular font, i.e. the font option must be a cross. If not any font effects will be overridden when you apply the bullet style. > There is no problem if one switches to the Bullet style in the normal way > and then types the text, but I was setting up the bulleted passage > retrospectively in the course of editing the document. It sounds a bit like this is a redraw problem. If you scroll to another page and back again do the bars disappear? If this is the case it is probably just the edge of the highlight not being erased properly. Well... If you have a frame with a picture in it, and you copy the frame into the same document, OPro automatically only holds one copy of the picture in memory. The bad news is that if you change one of the pictures the others are not updated. And embedded picutre frames don't do this automatic referencing of pictures at all. Also the older versions of OPro had a bug and didn't always use a reference when they should. Here they are: - The fully justify function does NOT work properly! This is certainly visible when using small frames. On screen everything looks perfect, but printing reveals some very disturbing inaccuracies. I use a 1200 DPI Lexmark postscript printer, together with original EFF postscript fonts. If this doesn't convince you, then be aware that the very same text in a very similar frame in Impression doesn't cause any problem... - Key short cuts for user created styles behave in an unpredictable way. Well, unpredictable...? They often - very predictable - don't work at all. Sometimes hitting a Ctrl-L or a Ctrl-N before might help, but usually it doesn't... - I can't discover the functionality of the 'Bleed' button. I want to print a pamphlet with a coloured background. Enabling 'Bleed', however, doesn't have any visible effect. (I expect the software to expand the background beyond the borders of the crop marks (as ...sorry... Impression does)). Am I missing something? - Bitmaps are still not knocked out properly. When putting a photograph on a spotcoloured background, I expect the software to automatically knock this graphic out from this background, when using separations. But this is actually only true when adding a white fill colour to the frame, containing the photograph. This is allright as long as the photograph is rectangular. But when it has an arbitrary shape, things go terribly wrong (does anyone follow me?). (By the way: for vector graphics the problem seems to be solved. Thank you, Mr. Pilling!) - The known problem with automatic italication and boldisation keeps frustrating me for a long time now. (Yes, yes, you DO know: if a font has more than the basic four weights, Ovation very often chooses the wrong one for italic or bold. So you have to create a special style for them (and change everything by hand, when deciding to use an other style or etc. etc.)) (No need to say that Impression etc. etc....) - OvationPro VERY OFTEN freezes the computer, or quits with a ununderstandable warning or no warning at all. Of course, I know it is a very complicate program, but Impression etc. etc... Can anyone predict a better future concerning these problems? Thanks in advance. Used to have this problem with early versions of OPro, over a year ago.
