In the master page I gave the page a 'colour' (to fill all the page). On printing the poster as a tile, 4 A4 pages were used as expected. What I didn't expect was the 'background' colour to fill all 4 pages right up to the edge except for the normal small margin of an inkjet printer, rather than just just the A3 boundaries. While I suspect putting the background colour in a frame the size of the page would contain the colour, I haven't tested this. Needless to say this 'effect' used up a heck of a lot of colour ink, which costs 25ukp a throw. Your'e right! White isnt treated properly. It seems to be being treated as transparent and isnt knocked out of the background. Even if its made into a spot colour in OPro and in ArtWorks (a bit folly anyway as doing this causes other problems). If we're right this is a serious problem (and not immediately obvious until expensive film has been produced) and will also force me to use Impression for jobs where this occurs. I'm pleased I found out now. I have difficulty using spot colours that have been used in ArtWorks at all. I know I have to define the exact same colour with the same name in OPro but it doesn't seem to work. I hate to say this, but I think it *IS* wrong. Suppose I have a page, covered with a green background (spotcolour). Now I want to display a map on it, containing a lot of white (streets, area's etc...). The only way to display this white in the eventual print, is to knock the map out from the background... (how else can I explain this?) On screen everything is fine (white colours on a coloured background), so you may expect that this won't change when printing separate plates. But it does! (By the way, the same is true for any other colour than white, including shades of grey - e.g. greyscale photographs!). I actually can't think of an example that doesn't show the need of knocking out graphics, but perhaps my fantasy is limited. At least I would like to have the choice, whether or not knocking out graphics. The way it works now, makes OPro useless for my daily work! Just a wild thought, but if you could implement frames which could expand, with their top growing upwards, and repelling text in other frames, you would be able to implement footnotes by dumping the text into those frames, and setting their size appropriately. I suppose they could be some special case of footers, which are linked to the main frame on the page anyway. Of course, such a scheme is probably far from trivial :-) Maybe even more difficult than implementing right to left text :-) Michael Ben-Gershon mybg@netvision.net.il To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Mon Mar 2 18:48:12 1998 Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA58366 for opro ; Mon, 02 Mar 98 18:48:11 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 888833105:12:14678:93; Mon, 02 Mar 98 10:05:05 GMT Received: from ehp-1.mail.demon.net ([193.195.0.154]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id ab0617663; 2 Mar 98 10:04 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by post.mail.demon.net id af0111084; 2 Mar 98 10:04 GMT From: Chris Manning Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Mon, 02 Mar 1998 09:25:05 +0000 Organization: Organisation? Perhaps the best compromise would be for white to knock out *if* it is set to overprint in the Edit Colours dialogue. Better still would be overprinting on an object level (I seem to recall this was a feature abandoned?) In the meantime, there is an alternative for monochrome files (e.g. logo bitmaps) - set appropriate duotones and it should work (if I recall correctly). There are still many film-setters which only respond to Postscript 1. There are also Postscript filmsetters which prefer the 'verbose' prologue. But (professionals please comment) I have a recollection that 2 returns is a typewriter hangover and paragraph spacing should be set according to what spacing looks best - usually less than 2 returns. If I do this by setting a positive 'space after' I can get the spacing right but OPro thinks it is a single paragraph (only 1 Return) and gives me problems if I want different styles to apply. The site will be set up as a stand alone site just for these applets, and any other OVPro material thought to be of use. Firstly I need anyone who has written one or more applets and would like them included on this site to contact me *privately* by e-mail with details, and if necessary to e.g. e-mail the latest versions. Once the site is up and running, those with applets included will be given ftp access so that they can keep their own contributions up to date without intervention by me. Approx two weeks ago I sent a file to Micro Laser Designs to have a poster printed from their Canon laser printer. Images were four colourcmyk and I had specified a couple of solid colours with cmyk values(although bothcolours actually had 0% k in them). I get back 10 great posters at A3, although the deep blue/purple came out bright blue(I had put this down to the laser printer); but as it looked good I stuck with it. So then I made a couple of textual changes to the file, making no colour changes and sent the file for printing with MLD on the same laser printer. 25 at A3, 26 at A4 and 500 at A5. When they came back the blue/purple large area background was solid black! Yikes! Between the first printing and the second, MLD had upgraded to 2.48 and the 1.02 colour supplement. They had 'use inks' selected when printing. Now since the file is being converted to Postscript before going through the printer having 'use inks' switched on presumably should not have had any effect on printing. It seems that it does, with rather disasterous effects. This is a major issue. Making sure that 'use inks' is switched off is too dodgy. Could we have an upgrade as soon as possible please. -- Alan Muscat *************** Grapevine Digital Arts *********************** ************** http://www.gvine.demon.co.uk ********************* To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Mon Mar 9 18:26:09 1998 Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA58889 for opro ; Mon, 09 Mar 98 18:26:07 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 889437364:05:29247:84; Mon, 09 Mar 98 09:56:04 GMT Received: from ehp-1.mail.demon.net ([193.195.0.154]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa0610694; 9 Mar 98 9:55 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by post.mail.demon.net id ae1000614; 9 Mar 98 9:55 GMT From: George Foot Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 09:49:23 +0000 Organization: Subject: Re: Mirror applet site To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19980309.094923.71@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Fri, 06 Mar 1998 12:32:40 +0000 (GMT) X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c On Fri 06 Mar, Chris Johnson wrote: > > I will only go ahead with this if there is sufficient interest. > > Chris Thanks. Just to confirm that I too have found it works faultlessly with Font Directory Pro - many thanks, Rupert, for this enhancement. FONTS - a different problem However, I still have another problem with fonts which I have yet to find mentioned in this list. The problem occurs when I use font families - such as those from Look Systems - which contain several variants on top of bold, italic, etc. (After all, access to a good range of faces within a font family is the sort of thing any self-respecting user should have, isnt it?) Let me try to give the simplest example: Im using Bembo Regular and click the Italic button from the info bar to italicise a word. The word appears in Bembo Extra Bold Italic rather than the regular italic that I desire. Things can be even worse if I'm using Plantin, which has an expert set that I sometimes use for its attractive old-style numbers. What can happen then is that setting the effect to italic selects Plantin.expert.italic. Because this face has only a very limited number of characters, most of the text disappears, leaving only a few symbols! Not what I want, and its a fiddle each time to get it right. Quite a few people have noticed the different screen colours and slower rendering of CMYK sprites as a result of this. In addition, there's a bug, if 'use inks' is on, rendering to printers is affected, which it should not be. I have now fixed this bug. >This is a major issue. Making sure that 'use inks' is switched off >is too dodgy. Could we have an upgrade as soon as possible please. Yes. We'll move to putting out 2.49 asap. Fixing the problem required changing the main program, so unfortunately I can't just stick up a new colour supplement. I'm sorry for the trouble all this will have caused you. I've always been aware that problems in the colour printing side could cost people dear. So if you're doing serious colour printing SWITCH USE INKS OFF. I think this was from v2.45 forward. Quite a few others on the list agreed that it needed to be fixed, (I've seen it mentioned in Acorn Publisher as a problem) but I've not heard anything since. It was inspired by an extension script for Pagemaker written by Ulrik H.Gade. The speed-up is much more than I was expecting. (2) Justified text loses its justification when printed to postscript. The text acquires what I can only call a 'soft rag'. I got this effect when Tony Tolver ran some film out for me a while back, and we couldn't work out what was happening. So it's interesting to see exactly the same thing happening on a different document on my own printer. Is this a problem with the Acorn postscript printer driver or with Ovation Pro? (3) A more serious problem is that some pieces of text don't seem to be placed properly in the line when the font is switched. The effect occurs regularly in lists of references in a journal I'm setting and the titles are in italics. The italic words seem to start too early in the line so that they overlap slightly with the roman. Again, is this likely to be a driver problem or Ovation Pro? Does anyone else suffer from this? I have tried using a proper postscript font (EFF publisher, Type 1 with the AFM file) but the problem does not go away. Any ideas? As I said at the time, the big worry is if you combine justification with tracking (or kerning), in that case we know that some printer drivers don't work correctly. >(3) A more serious problem is that some pieces of text don't > seem to be placed properly in the line when the font is > switched. There is a devious mechanism whereby the Acorn printer driver derives a paper command for the printer from the paper name. This is how {buscard} ended up in the PS code above. If instead you follow Acorns convention and call your paper "A4 (buscard)", then "A4" would end up being parsed out as the paper size (try F12, *show PDriver$P*), and the OPro Library.PSSupport file would send that paper size to the printer as a command. So NB if you feel like giving PS paper sizes odd names. There is an alternative approach which is to just hack the code in the function void pssupport_prcache0() in the Library.PSSupport file, so that it duplicates the Impression output. Just trivial changes inserting some prprint() commands to print the necessary code to the printer. However we initially rejected the Impression route because of other problems. I too have had this problem on (I think) every job I've run to film. It seems to occur whether or not auto-kerning is set, and whether using a Type 1 font (eg. EFF LondonA) or a standard Type 3 conversion of an Acorn font from the Acorn PS driver. It looks OK on-screen, but manifests itself on film, or in a GhostScript preview of a PS file. Yes, just drag the buttons into the positions you desire. You do this using Ctrl+Select drag. Having got them into the order you want, pop up the main menu and click on Misc->Macros... Finally click on Save on the macros window. It probably is non-obvious, but the order of buttons on the button bar is the order macros are defined in. The url is http://www1.che.hw.ac.uk/~ovpro/ note the tilde ^ Don't get too excited - there is not a lot there at the moment. This "thread" began when there were comments about certain sites not being available at all times. At the moment the site contains a full set of Rupert Thompson's applets, together with Chris Ford's DBase applet, and a CSV massaging application (not an applet). I hope to get more stuff on the site as and when it (or permission) becomes available. The bottom line is that it is up to you, yourselves, how much material ultimately finds its way onto these pages. Besides applets, there are other types of resource that could be shared. For example, templates for various label layouts or other types of document, FAQ's extracted from the mail list archives. There are also plenty of freeware applications for doing things to text which could have relevance, e.g. DDL to HTML. I would be interested to hear comments. A few problems have shown themselves just lately. I produce a magazine and the =9Ele has been cleared out and reused for many months. When it was saved as a DDL =9Ele, it would not re-load, reporting an unknown object at some line number. Because of this I decided to save the document as a template, and start again. The new =9Ele duly showed one page for each of the two chapters. The =9Erst chapter is only the front cover and the inside front cover, so a second page was added, and this was done without any trouble. When trying to add another page to the second chapter the fun started. The page addition dialogue does not recognise the decimal point notation and always added a page after page 2 of chapter one. Trying to add a page after page 3 did not work, pages were still added after page 2 as part of chapter one. Pages could not be added in front of page 3, they also became part of chapter one. In desperation I added a page after the non-existant page 4 and this duly added page 4, correctly as part of chapter two. Pages could be added to this second chapter after that without any trouble. I have had problems adding pages in the old document but put this down to a defect in the old =9Ele. Has anyone else had similar dif=9Eculties? Could we have a simple, add page or pages before or after the current page? I think that would cover all circumstances, would it not? There has already been a comment that a page number (ignoring chapter divisions) for the total document would be useful, perhaps this is another way to tackle this problem. There has been some comment about graphics on coloured backgrounds. I had some problems with this. A black on white draw =9Ele placed on a red =9Elled frame, needed for other drop-out text, was required to print as a drop-out. Experimentation found that the display and separation matched when the picture was set to duotone, with lower colour white and upper red. Whether spot was selected or not, did not affect the output. These settings seem to be the opposite of what would be expected, but they work. Just recently I have added a second hard disk and wanted to move Ovation Pro, version 2.48, to the new drive. The program was transferred it would not run but asked for the =9Ele to be dragged to the install program. When this was attempted the original install program was not recognised. Is this due to the fact that the version is now 2.48? How do I transfer a working copy of the program to the new disc as I don=91t fancy doing a new install and update, especially as everything is working OK? Bernard=20 --=20 Bernard G. However, its tackling the problem from the wrong end, isnt it? I dont really want to muck about with perfectly reasonable font names when its the program that is the cause of the trouble. Id also need to edit all those documents using those fonts with their original names, including chunks of 3 Shakespeare plays with line numbers in Plantin Expert....! What normally happens is that my Canon BubbleJet feeds a sheet of paper and then the computer crashes. It can't be alleviated by the System Monitor, which also seems to die. I think I can remember others having problems with this, and remembering these, I was able to alleviate the problem by converting all grapics to drawfiles. Will this problem be sorted in the next release? Other than that, I haven't got any complaints. Having used Ovation Pro since the initial releases I am still enjoying using it, and look forward to see what more will come of it in the future. -- ______ _ __ " / ____/( )___/ / " > Sudipta Sarkar \__ \/ / __ / Promised the world, delivered an arse. ____/ / / /_/ / @ University of St Andrews /_____/_/\__,_/ ss30@st-andrews.ac.uk sudipta@wiredsoc.ml.org To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Mon Mar 16 19:13:54 1998 Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA59484 for opro ; Mon, 16 Mar 98 19:13:53 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 890040191:12:01829:82; Mon, 16 Mar 98 09:23:11 GMT Received: from ehp-1.mail.demon.net ([193.195.0.154]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id ab0607852; 16 Mar 98 9:22 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by post.mail.demon.net id ao1020326; 16 Mar 98 9:22 GMT From: Mr R Coleman Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 09:10:44 +0000 Organization: Subject: Printing To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19980316.091044.51@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Sat, 14 Mar 98 23:39:45 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c I have recently updated my printer status program which sits on the icon bar and changes it's icon to reflect the state of the printer on the parallel port, it also checks the state of the printer when you print from another application or drag a file to the !Printer icon.
