There's something which I probably should make public. It seems that if you use tracking (or manual kerning) on a line which is justified, then on Acorn printer drivers, the tracking is ignored and so you get a ragged right hand edge. It's news to me if there is a similar problem with CC drivers. Perhaps this comment will give you clues as to where to look for a cause. The other suspect would be using enhanced justification. OPro is unique in offering this, and so is likely to root out some new problems in printer drivers and so on. From: Chris Wragg >Am I missing something, or is there a one-key press to clear all tabs? You mean on Enhanced Justification? This seems to be a problem with using either Laser Direct or Turbo Drivers which use CCs version of the font manager and doesn't understand the intricacies of micro spacing. Needless to say, CC say they have absolutely no intention of changing things so that it works on Ovation Pro :-) I did try turning off Laser Direct halftoning options etc, but this led to an even bigger can of worms with text not appearing etc. Ray D -- ..===================================. | M a g R a y Document Services | Ray Dawson Tel: 0181 864 7208 | the print and braille specialists | rayd@argonet.co.uk '===================================' http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/rayd To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Tue Nov 4 13:53:50 1997 Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA49509 for opro ; Tue, 04 Nov 97 13:53:48 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 878636349:12:14585:84; Tue, 04 Nov 97 09:39:09 GMT Received: from post-20.mail.demon.net ([194.217.242.27]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa1512906; 4 Nov 97 9:38 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by post.mail.demon.net id ac2000703; 4 Nov 97 9:38 GMT From: Mr R Coleman Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 04 Nov 1997 09:35:23 +0000 Organization: Subject: Re: Various To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19971104.093523.48@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Sun, 2 Nov 97 22:26:31 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c >> I have recently written a printer status program which sits on the icon >>bar and changes it's icon to reflect the state of the printer on the parallel >>port >How about giving us the URL for your program? I guess all software except OPro just uses the expand each space feature. The ability to expand characters only appeared in RISC OS 3. My experiments so far seem to show; CC driver + enhanced justification == ragged right hand edge Acorn driver + enahnced justification + tracking == ragged right hand edge I have to do some more tests to prove conclusively where the blame lies. My suspicion would be in the printer drivers. If so we face the usual unhappy situation of either waiting for a bug fix, or messing about with the code to work around the problem. It's important the problem is known about. I'd be interested to hear of any other situations which make justification go wrong. You are right that switching off CC's font manager (halftoning) is a plausible idea for getting around the problem. Although the setting of that is already a compromise. I have finally got around to sorting out my user dictionary and would like to split it into a number of dictionaries for specialised tasks. To do this at present the only thing I can see is to find the word in the user dictionary, open a new one, type it in, add it, go back to the user dictionary, get a new word etc etc. I would very much like to just have one copy of !Words that both OvationPro and WebSpell can use instead of my two separate copies. I need them at the moment because the new WebSpell !MainDict is more extensive than OPro, but OPro contains words that I have added that I would rather not lose. Possible Solution: Some previous dictionary systems in Acorn applications had an export facility which allowed you to output the whole dictionary as a text file. This would enable me to spellcheck the file using my new dictionaries and deal with words systematically. Could this be implemented easily? A more elegant solution would be a "Merge Dictionary" dialogue like a find and replace that could step through one adding the words to the second. Add this word, Next Word, Add all words would be the obvioud buttons. Anyone else think this would be handy? Err Ovation 1? Seriously, just click menu over the Edit dictionary window and a save box will appear, allowing you to save the dictionary as a text file. Similarly you can drop text files into that window. It helps a lot if the text files you import are in the right order. Which is AaBbCc and not ABCabc. I would rip off the 'sort' utility from inside Peter Bonds indexer applet to do this job. >A more elegant solution would be a "Merge Dictionary" dialogue like a >find and replace that could step through one adding the words to the second. >Add this word, Next Word, Add all words would be the obvioud buttons. Save both dictionaries as text, dump them both into Edit, save the merged file. Run it through the aforementioned 'sort' program, set up to strip duplicates. Of course taking the WebSpell dictionary, saving as text, loading into OPro, and then spell checking it would give a similar effect, but much slower. Leaving aside the details of the story that Paco Moya turned out two hefty volumes this summer with his RPC/Sibelius/O-Pro package against the one volume last year with his original PowerMac/Finale/Quark and with exactly the same high quality, I would like to say that you probably are in a minority in being somewhat happiness-challenged. The other day I corrupted my font partition within Font Directory Pro. When I rebuilt it I increased the size of the partition but decreased the number of active fonts. I also altered the structure of the fonts within it. When I next started Ovation Pro I get the error Buffer overflow. If I increase or decrease the number of active fonts then OP will load ok, but after the next hard reset OP will get the Buffer overflow error again. I tried removing all the applets but this did not help. Another problem occurred when I loaded a file, I got the Missing fonts error. So I clicked on Reflow and changed all the fonts to the correct active ones. When I next reloaded this file I still got the Missing fonts error although all the fonts had been changed. Any ideas anyone. Am I missing something obvious. I have always regarded the nature of this scrolling as a feature. No. Personally, I'm pleased to know the bugs -have- been successfully resolved (as opposed to being told 'yes, we know about that bug, no you can't expect to have it fixed within your lifetime'). In addition to this, I've also been pleased that we are getting honest and swift answers to our questions, even if that question is "When will we get 2.47?" I am content that The Powers That Be (in this context) are doing what they can to bring us all 2.47, and that it will happen as soon as it can be organised. If you want something to be pissed off about in this vein, look to something like the Acorn C compiler, which is based off the ARM C compiler. There are issues with the currently available release from Acorn that have been resolved a long time ago in the ARM release. -- I won't use words again May god stand between you they don't mean what I meant and harm in all the empty they don't say what I said places where you must walk To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Mon Nov 10 19:32:33 1997 Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA50038 for opro ; Mon, 10 Nov 97 19:32:31 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 879160289:06:14238:30; Mon, 10 Nov 97 11:11:29 GMT Received: from post-10.mail.demon.net ([194.217.242.154]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa1529930; 10 Nov 97 11:11 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by post.mail.demon.net id bj1027463; 10 Nov 97 11:10 GMT From: Ariancylch Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 10:16:27 +0000 Organization: Lylmik Supervisory body Subject: Re: Scroll speed To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19971110.101627.03@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Sun, 09 Nov 1997 00:13:51 +1200 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c In message <19971107.094403.55@risc.demon.co.uk> David Allen wrote: > On Thu 06 Nov, David Pilling wrote: > > > > From: Ariancylch > > > > > Is there anything wrong with the 'the further the pointer is from > > > where you started dragging, the faster things will scroll' method? > > > I've always quite liked that scheme. Obviously you could get KeyStroke from Quantum Software, which some people swear by. OPro does have the ability to record key strokes as a macro. Despite all the programmability in OPro somethings just aren't there - e.g. an automated way of changing frame colours. Menu selections would be a doddle because they all call script commands. From: Colin Thompson >with all the reported bugs to keep being told "it's been fixed in 2.47" (but >you can't have a copy)? Some days I feel like I'm making up a fairy story "oh yes it's fixed". Anyway just to enhance your irritation and to prove I am not fibbing, I have emailed out a few copies of 2.47 to those in dire need. Seriously though saying "it's fixed" is the answer, if it has been, just lets everyone know what the position is. I'd just say don't blame anyone, all you have to do, is persuade Beebug to devote more resources to supporting OPro. From: David Allen >I have been mystified by this thread for the past few days. One thing is that some people use the mouse in different ways to others. You'd be amazed at the trouble leaving an icon set to click/drag can cause, because not everyone clicks in just the same way. Ian, At the risk of upsetting some people around here, I think that if 2.47 or whatever has some significant improvements then ukp5 for an upgrade is fine. Especially as it will generate some additional revenue and help to fund continuing development. If we want OvationPro to develop then ukp5 is b****r all to pay! Some versions of !EndNotes will access the hard disc when you cut and paste text, because cutting and pasting of notes needs to preserve and restore the contents of the clipboard. But that only applies to EndNotes 2.80 and later, which I haven't released yet, and which don't foul up the dictionary, anyway. I guess some people yank my chain more than others. The issue with 2.47 is that the final version is not ready. I have *a* 2.47 from David, but I need to do all of the necessary housekeeping to turn it into *the* 2.47. Lots has changed so several of the distribution discs need to be updated. I gave myself two weeks to complete the work since I can't see me doing much on it this week and I guess that is the real issue. If all I had to do was support Ovation Pro then 2.47 would have been ready for the show, unfortunately that is not the case. I hope that you can show some patience and know that I will get the work done as soon as I can. As the chaps and chapesses at Beebug will know, I was not a happy bunny with the first release of Ov Pro. The speed with which things from the "Wants" list have gradually been implemented is absolutly first class. Temporary fixes for little bugs and features have been posted to this mail list, and many of us have contributed little bits and pieces to help things along. I now think Ov Pro is an excellent piece of kit, so much so, that I've recently transferred all of my business Wp stuff out of Publisher and into Ov Pro. And it's continually improving. Surely a mere formality ;) Cheers, Richard -- _______________________________________________________________________ Graphite Design & Presentation http://www.fwservices.com/graphite Information graphite.info@argonet.co.uk Sales graphite.sales@argonet.co.uk Other enquiries graphite@argonet.co.uk To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Tue Nov 11 14:08:02 1997 Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA50175 for opro ; Tue, 11 Nov 97 14:08:00 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 879241341:05:05784:79; Tue, 11 Nov 97 09:42:21 GMT Received: from post-20.mail.demon.net ([194.217.242.27]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id ac1517827; 11 Nov 97 9:41 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by post.mail.demon.net id ay2000954; 11 Nov 97 9:40 GMT From: Nick Kaijaks Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 09:09:45 +0000 Organization: Subject: Re: Equation Applet? If you ever used Equasor before Formulix was released, or any version of Microsoft Equation you will appreciate how easy it is to poorly format maths! As you say, the only alternative is to import drawfiles and align then manually, which isn't really an ideal solution. You have already mentioned Techwriter, which I have to *heavily* recommend. You are right, it cannot perform the dtp features of OPro, but for technical writing, with a high maths content there is *no* contest, and I say that as a loyal, faithful and huge OPro fan! Techwriter can also export as drawfiles, RTF and TeXfiles, so you ought to be able to readily incorporate it into OPro documents. It also both reads and writes MS Word 6 and 7, which can be very useful in environments with a high PC density. Perhaps to compare Techwriter and Formulix would be akin to comparing Sibelius 7 and Maestro! If you haven't tried it, get a demo, amd perhaps try to reconsider whether you can justify it after all - I used to curse at the combination of Equasor and Impression in doing just this sort of writing, and recall only too well the time I wasted. Now, I'm very happy to be able use both OPro and Techwriter as appropriate. Check with Icon Technology - they may be able to offer you something less than 'The Full Monty' of TW Pro that will satisfy your needs. They certainly do a 50% student discount, which might apply to teachers as well - it doesn't hurt to ask! Yes, known, yes fixed in 2.47. As to disc access the one idea which springs to mind, is that there is an applet which records opening documents, and when you save to the clipboard, for better or worse that issues create document events. From: Mr John Boyles >I wondered if it would be possible to write an equation applet along the li >nes of Formulix so that equations could be treated just like normal text? Well I've made enough promises without promising an equation editor. Pity really because I'm qualified to write one. The approach to an applet would be to decide what sort of additions would be needed to OPro's text handling, for example codes which allowed vertical and horizontal movement, once they were added to the main program, then an applet might not be too hard. >If this is not possible I noticed that in Formulix=91s Save/Export options >there is one called Drawfile y=3D0=91 which is supposed to help vertical >ly aligning embedded formulae. I believe Draw files from Formulix have a negative y value for their bounding box to show how the Draw file should be displayed relative to a line of text. To some extent we chickened out by not supporting this. From: Alan J Pitcher >When I next started Ovation Pro I get the error Buffer overflow. >If I increase or decrease the number of active fonts then OP will >load ok, but after the next hard reset OP will get the Buffer >overflow error again. I tried removing all the applets but this >did not help. All depends whose buffer is overflowing. I was going to say this is one of those classic error reports which has some cause I can't remember (offers?). But it could easily be that OPro is going wrong whilst cataloguing the available fonts. I can't see off hand why only you would be victim of this. To add to the fun, in 2.47 I've changed all this code to support font aliases, so things will be different (not necessarily better). >Another problem occurred when I loaded a file, I got the Missing fonts >error. So I clicked on Reflow and changed all the fonts to the correct >active ones. When I next reloaded this file I still got the Missing >fonts error although all the fonts had been changed. This sounds like a bug, miscounting font uses. Just save the document as DDL and reload. To take people's minds off the impending release of OPro 2.47, I've come up with a short(?) wishlist that would help wean me off Publisher! Do other people think they would be useful, or know of ways of implementing them? Magnifier: "Previous" zoom/position would be very useful (as in Publisher, where Adjust clicking on the magnifier icon goes back to the previous zoom, eg after zooming in on some detail. Mail merge: mail merge just using field numbers instead of names seems extremely crude, compared with the rest of OPro! Perhaps an applet would do the trick, but is there any way of intercepting Merge commands when merging? Can arbitrary text be stored in the merge command? I have some simple but useful database utilities which are controlled by Publisher's mail merge tags. It would be helpful if OPro could support CC's public domain Impulse module, to use mail merge commands as in Impression. It would be worth making this possible, as it would allow more meaningful names, and in conjunction with an applet to handle extra merge commands (or broadcast an Impulse message) would allow databases and my special functions to work. [The things my program can do: look up addresses in one CSV file to match the names found in the main CSV file; extract all the entries in a CSV file matching some criterion; skip a record if a condition is not satisfied, eg the value of a field is zero, etc; move to next mail-merge record within a document; automatically numbered citations referred to by nicknames, a bit like Endnote but allowing a citation to be mentioned multiple times within a document. If it were possible and easy, I'd make these freely available.] Autosave: If the !OvWrite applet is enabled, to check saving over all files, it asks for confirmation every time the autosave occurs. This may suit some people, but I find it annoying. Setting !OvWrite to protect only older files is dangerous if the names are different. !Publisher works well in this respect, in that it does not complain if the file has already been saved to, but only if you try to change the name and save it over another file. Any chance of !OvWrite being able to detect this subtlety? Applets: OPro takes quite a time to start up, because of the number of applets (even excluding less-used applets I have 26). The same used to be true of Artworks until CC introduced a fast load feature which put all the extensions together in advance. Could such a feature be added to OPro, please? Automatic paragraph numbering (as in Publisher)? Perhaps Endnote could do this by omitting the notes themselves, and allowing more than one such set? I'm sure there are more than enough things on the To Do list already (despite the powerful range of existing features), but some of these might be easy to implement and would pursuade more people to move over from "legacy software"! The metal wire binding on the current Ovation Pro manuals is not too good in my opinion. Several sections of the wire have broken leaving the manual in rather a mess. The manual has not had harsh treatment, only frequent reference. Have any other users had this problem? A much better alternative would be to print the manual so that it would fit into an industry-standard three-ring software binder, as with the Impression Publisher manual. Updated information on Ovation Pro could then be easily added. It would not be necessary to include a binder with the new manual as these are available from most stationers.
