I'll explain. I want to have two rows of buttons, but have then grouped under each other in sensible order. So, I may have a block of five on the top and four below. The next block of buttons will have the bottom row to the left of the top, but I would like them to be in line. It's not always possible to group buttons top and bottom so that they line up sensibly - putting large gaps would make it easy. Can it be done by altering the macro file manually? Does the following sound familiar to anyone, and is there a solution? My document uses two spot colours: 100% red and 100% black and tints thereof. Viewing separations this is fine. If I import drawfiles using the same two colours, they separate into process colours. Obviously the draw format doesn't allow for definition of spot colours. Can't OPro make an educated guess? Am I missing something obvious? Is there another way around this? The only idea I can come up with now I'm typing this is is to import the drawfile to ArtWorks and define the colours as spots in there. Will that work? What I, and (I think) others are saying is that you frequently get problems with the PS printerdriver. I've had some bizarre results. Although I must admit I've never been able to fully ascertain whether the problem has been the printerdriver or the output device at the bureau. It is a piece of PoScript code that can be used to clean-up PoScript files; from its header: % OVERVIEW: % This is a meta-utility program that "distills" any PostScript % language program into a simpler one. The resulting program % will print exactly the same page as the original, but all % unnecessary execution overhead is eliminated and the file is % clean, uniform, and fast. its output is (if You happen to run it successfully): % KNOWN COMPATIBLE PROGRAMS % The following applications have been tested (with some version of the % driver, at least), successfully: % Lotus Manuscript % Macintosh "LaserPrep" (all documents, I think) % DEC's VaxDocument % Scribe % PageMaker % Frame Maker % Adobe Illustrator % TranScript (ditroff and enscript drivers) to use it You will need to interact with the PoScript-Interpreter directly and You will need a "full" interpreter. I myself have used this program together with RiScript and GhostScript on an Acorn machine to prepare illustrations for importing them into ArtWorks. If You can, try to use ShowPS by CC. (There must be some 2 other PS-Interpreters for RISC OS which I could not get hold of) This said I have to admit that quite a lot of ps-files will require You to employ an interpreter like NextStep's Display-PostScript to get more than just an error. Anyone interested in this piece of code might like to mail me under "mvethake@ucs.de", but be warned my version is probably completely out of date. Have fun, have PostScript... Presumeably the only thing which makes EPS any different to PS, is the optional preview image, other than that we're back to the dreaded 'subsets'. The second point reminds me that one reason for the ugliness of Acorns PS is the need to support RISC OS features which are not part of PS e.g. sprites with masks lead to printing out strips. This is an opportunity to note the release of David Pilling's scanning software 1.08. This will now save images as EPS files with an optional TIFF preview and optionaly JPEG'd main image. EPS files with JPEG'd data do give considerable savings in time and space. For now this is only of use for professional printing of grey scale documents (IM is limited to RGB images at the moment). It's also only of use to users of Impression. Work is under way on an OPro EPS applet which can use such files. In the meantime you can load JPEG's direct into OPro, and such images will come out of Acorns PS driver as JPEG'd data, with the above advantages. However there are the usual constraints on rotating JPEG's. Finally JPEG's are only supported in PS level 2. From:(Ray Dawson) >How can I put big gaps between buttons on the button bar? OPro only supports no gap, and the standard half a button gap. Probably the best that is on offer is a blank button. From:(Nick Kaijaks) >My document uses two spot colours: 100% red and 100% black and tints thereof. >Viewing separations this is fine. Am I missing something obvious? Is there another way around this? I was going to go on about the dangers of educated guesses, but I supppose that I could add a feature that made it use the closest colour. I believe that the usual trick in this situation is to use (say) Cyan as a pseudo spot colour. That way you get your educated guess. You can always redefine the colour of Cyan so that things look right. >The only idea I can come up with now I'm typing this is is to import the >drawfile to ArtWorks and define the colours as spots in there. The creation of standoff curves round draw files has some interesting characteristics. 1 Lines with a width of less than 1 point seem to be ignored. 2 Closed curves normally have a standoff curve on the outside. However if the curve gets too small the standoff curve moves to the inside, and at smaller sizes still, the standoff curve consists of a single vertex. 3 I have not found it possible to delete standoff curves. However it is possible to delete vertices individually. When, after deleting vertices until the curve has three left, an attempt is made to delete one of the remainder, either the delete command is ignored, or Ovation Pro freezes up, and requires ALT-BREAK. 4 Under some circumstances (which I have been unable to demonstrate simply) the text flow seems to be trapped inside a standoff curve. Characters are displayed inside a small region of the page, and overlapping. The characters are not always taken from lines which are nearby. I discovered this effect when I wanted to put a line drawn map on to the page. I used a section of the British coastline taken from EarthMap. This program allows the export as a Draw files. The coastline and features have a very large number of points, and the ends of some of the lines created standoff curves with several hundred vertices close together. These areas are where the trapped text effect was seen. It was in attempting to delete most of the vertices that I discovered the method of crashing Ovation Pro. A simple demonstration can be set up as follows. Create a draw file with a vertical line about 50mm long. This is to ensure that OPro scales the graphic correctly. Create a circle about an 25mm in diameter to one side of it. Make sure the line width is set to one (point). Copy the circle, and reduce the size to 10mm. Copy the circle again and reduce the size to about 3mm. Create an OPro page with a graphic frame about 50mm high, overlaying text. Create a standoff curve with 3mm standoff. (The value is not critical, but it's easier to see. Using a smaller standoff the effects show up with smaller features.) The text will flow correctly around the line and the large circle. The text will overlap the medium circle, and will not flow round any part of the small circle. A click on the edit path button will show a reasonable standoff curve for the line and the large circle, a curve inside the medium circle, and a point in the small circle. To get a really confused standoff curve, add a capital W to the draw file, using Trinity font, and size 100 points. Convert it to a path. Drop this graphic into the frame, set standoff to picture, 3mm, and examine the curve. Part of the path will be about 30mm below the lowest point of the letter, and the text flow will be very strange. Changing the error choice from the default 2 to values as high as 100 doesn't make much difference either. ---------------------------- All this is not intended to be critical of OPro - after all, if I didn't like the program, I wouldn't be bothering to send this in. However it would be nice if this useful feature could be improved. An easy way to delete a standoff curve completely would be a good start. A way to specify the "accuracy" of the curve would be another. By this, I mean a way to tell OPro that you want a smaller or larger number of points on the curve, which might avoid some of the "knots" it generated on the map sample I used. A way to change a selection of points on the standoff curve into a single segment might be an alternative. As an alternative approach, would it be possible to use Draw to do the editing? The functions are similar (and I DO like the way OPro allows use of Select, instead of requiring Adjust)but Draw is a bit more flexible. For example, when a segment is deleted in Draw, the next one becomes selected, making it easier to simplify a curve. -- Alan Adams To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Fri Oct 3 13:47:41 1997 Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA46996 for opro ; Fri, 03 Oct 97 13:47:39 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 875866305:06:03430:40; Fri, 03 Oct 97 09:11:45 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id ae1214059; 3 Oct 97 9:11 BST From:(Carl Cepurneek) Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Fri, 03 Oct 1997 08:56:18 +0100 Organization: Subject: Re:PS output To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19971003.085618.81@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Fri, 3 Oct 1997 09:52:16 +0930 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c David wrote: >Providing direct PS output from OPro would be fairly easy, but I'd >need convincing ... I want to print an A5 booklet on A4 paper. 'Pamphlet printing' seems designed to do just this (and better than Publisher too - no arcane re-arranging of the paper order to print the other side :-) ). However... I know from many, many experiments that my BJC600 and Turbo Driver will print to within 10.5mm of the bottom of a sheet of A4. So why does Ovation insist that I need to scale the page by 66 percent in order to avoid the claimed-by-Ovation printing limit of 15.5mm from the bottom? If I scale the page to 69 percent the print border is shown to be 10mm, and a line 10.5mm from the bottom is certainly printed. However, to add to the confusion, the sheet of A4 has the two pages printed on it in the wrong place. The line that was shown as 10.5mm from the bottom is actually 12.5 mm, and the other line that should have been 10mm from the top (that is, the other page of the pair) is actually 9.25mm from the top (I have a frame with borders on an A4 page that extends to 10.5mm of the top and bottom). I suppose to make me even more confused all these measurements are then scaled when printed... Still, the upshot is that, if I ignore Ovation's advice about scaling, I end up with two A5 pages side by side, the left one of which needs to migrate to the left by 2-3mm, and a right hand page that needs to go in the opposite direction by 1-2mm. And that's just not possible. (Let's avoid any mention of guttering, or whatever, for the moment). So, why? And, what's the solution? -- m. I've been bothered by the same problem. I wondered whether OP (or an applet) could analyse an imported draw file and match colours in !draw files to spot colours in OP? Or could we persuade iSV to add spot colours to the incredible value for money DrawWorks2 ? Aren't we non-programmers just full of ideas.... ;-) One practical solution, if your drawfile only one or two colours is to prepare 'separations' in !Draw. In Nick's example of a red & black graphic: 1) convert all the red (& red tint) lines & areas to white to give a black separation. 2) Place this in OP 3) convert all the black lines & areas to white (or delete the items) and then the red parts to balck/grey(for tints) 4) Place this 'red' separation in a transparent frame over the black separation - ensure frame edges, graphic scaling, xy offsets etc are identical. Now select the 'red' sep and using Picture-Process select the Duotone option and set the Lower colour to be your Red spot. Not too arduous if the graphic is fairly simple - and I mean simple. It won't cope too well with complex overlapping colours - you'll see what I mean if you try it - but is a workround for certain situations. Well, rather than just the closest (this could go very pear-shaped), just pick up if it uses identical RGB values. If there's a colour in the imported graphic which isn't in the OPro document, then perhaps create colours with default names (as you do with duplicate styles already). This could still cause problems if you don't print separations for all these colours, and for Draw pseudo-graduated fills, you could end up with hundreds of imported colours. Maybe if you got a dialogue to ask if you if you wanted to try to convert colours? >I believe that the usual trick in this situation is to use (say) Cyan >as a pseudo spot colour. This would solve the problem entirely, providing I remember not to use drawfiles by accident... This leads me onto another idea - would it be possible for someone to write a program that would read DDLs, or better still an applet that keeps an eye on your documents for certain features like drawfiles with undefined colours when you're printing separations. What I do in the meantime is either get them in RTF format, or if I don't have a choice of output format, I keep a copy of WordPerfect on the PC card which will import Word files (and many other formats). I then save them out as RTF which drop quite nicely into Ovation Pro. No graphics of course. Not ideal, but it works. So why >does Ovation insist that I need to scale the page by 66 percent in >order to avoid the claimed-by-Ovation printing limit of 15.5mm from >the bottom? Two ideas. Firstly the paper size for the printer has to have the correct margins. For example A4 Generic DP has a bottom margin of 20mm. If OPro is getting 15.5mm from anywhere it is from the printer drivers paper size definition. Secondly, a related and little known point. If you use Centre on the print window, your work gets centered on the physical paper area - ignoring any printer margins. Fit fits the work to the printer margins. However Fit used at the same time as Centre adjusts things to get the work inside the printable area at the same time as leaving it centred. This results in a smaller scale than fit on its own. >If I scale the page to 69 percent the print border is shown to be >10mm 10/15.5 ~ 65% >However, to add to the confusion, the sheet of A4 has the two pages >printed on it in the wrong place. The line that was shown as 10.5mm > from the bottom is actually 12.5 mm, and the other line that should All this has been about the scale, but I wonder if OPro also set up some X+Y shifts too? I think there also has to be a general get out over the absolute accuracy you can expect from RISC OS when printing scaled down and any printer. But the bottom line is, check the paper size. Identical would probably be fun, given that colours in draw files are stored as 0..255, but that we all now use colour pickers that go 0..100%. I was also thinking about spot tints, you'd lose those with identical. It would be good if someone would write down a standard way of extending Draw files to cope with CMYK and Spots. Certainly this can be done in a backwards compatible way. Expecting Acorn to support it in Draw next week is too much to hope for - but at least we'd all be going in the right direction. >This leads me onto another idea - would it be possible for someone to write >a program that would read DDLs, or better still an applet that keeps an eye >on your documents for certain features like drawfiles with undefined colours I've been thinking about that, in the light of the thin lines etc. You've added another one to the list 'Draw files with colours in'. >>arts of copy protection, about the best way to stop people using it. >Not sending it out to them would be the easiest way ;-) Ah you worked it out. Sorry about that. The 'error' means that as far as the program is concerned the world just came to an end. It has managed to corrupt itself, and there's no possibility of a nice error message. Here are some suggestions. Method 1 Create a new document that has a page size of A4 and is landscape. Setup the master frame to have a margin of 0mm all the way round. Now create a frame with the following properties: X - 14.96 Y - 14.96 W - 266.93 H - 180.09 columns - 2 gutter - 30 column width - 118.46 (all sizes in mm) Treat the two 'columns' as A5 pages and type your text in to them, alternatively use them as guides for creating text frames. To get a new set of pages click in the outer frame and press keypad-enter. You can link the pages together if you wish. When printing just select 'sideways' and it should print out, and fold correctly. If you want a copy of the stylesheet for this email me (p.j.daniel@eee.salford.ac.uk) and I will gladly email you a copy. Method 2 If the booklet is to be photocopied then this method works equally as well, better in some cases. [...] I hope these ideas are of some help.
