It works really well and saves having to open each applet to find out the version number. I could however be improved. OvPro sets up the variable to indicate the directory for applets. The applet manager expects the applets to be in directory .Applets. For most people this will be the same directory and cause no problem. With various family members using the same version of OvPro I set up the variable to point to different directories for each user. In this way we can each have our own stationery, recently used documents, etc. in much the same way as we have our own user dictionaries. The Applet Manager ought to use the same variable. Finally - a question - would it be possible to have different choices for each user? For example at present we have to compromise over the date format. Keep up the good work. I have a need for this facility. Have not yet tried a workaround in OP, but in Impression I have to set a new style (ruler) on the last line of a paragraph, with a wider right margin. This, of course, only allows the outdent on the last line - it would be useful if it could be achieved on the first (or any other) line within the paragraph. I wouldn't mind the outdent being in a separate frame/column if the vertical position of the outdented text could be aligned to a particular mark within the body text. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Bell - peter@foursqre.demon.co.uk - FourSquare Computing Ltd 5 Drome Path, Winnersh, Wokingham, Berkshire RG41 5HB, UK. Well, I have got a subdirectory, since the newest version of the applet comes with one set up. Initially it happened where I had my document _below_ the submenu, and I thought I'd try renaming things so that the submenu was the last item on the menu instead of the first. The problem went away, but the other day I had the machine completely hang up when I tried to access the document. It _is_ always the same document, but I don't think it is anything to do with that - I've heard from another user who has had applet cause his machine to hang up as well, and he's gone back to using the previous version. > Of course this is happening because the 'applet wizzard' has gone away > (to where superheroes go (Milton Keynes)) and I've taken over 8-( Erk! The current version of OPro 2.45/2.46 which you should receive any day, has a new print format - 'thumbnails' this means you design just one business card on a page, and then use thubnails to print it, each individual print will have its own crop marks. My reply is: Cobblers! I've spent hours and hours, and god knows how many logs of wasted wood trying to do what's suggested above. So unless someone can explain this process in sufficient detail, so that I don't have to waste more paper, before I get to the card... My worry would be how trivial the things you're printing are - simple Draw file in a rectangular upright frame, with no missing fonts etc. etc. ? The one long shot at a bug explanation would be to open the View->Seps menu before you print. I'd be inclined to try printchoices(0,...) since that will make OPro more akin to Impression. The question was: >Is it possible to put crop marks around frames as in Publisher Plus. >For example, When I have business cards several times up on an A4 sheet, >the printer requires crop marks to individually guillotine them after >printing. I know there are options for Border definitions in the file of >that name the problem is I am a Graphic Designer not a software engineer. The reply was: Impression of course has this very sly trick with using border to generate crop marks - invented by Tony Tolver. We seriously thought about doing this - but did not. This request, and the transparent tints someone else requested, show that OPro users are wanting true wysiwyg on screen and are printing to composite colour printers. This is partly a sign of the direction in which dtp is changing publishing, and partly an indicator that we each have our own definition of "professional". The blue+yellow=green works with pigments which reflect light, not dyes and inks which are transparent, nor cathode ray tubes which generate light. For inks the colour is generated by the light passing through to the white paper underneath and being reflected back through the ink. Yellow ink absorbs blue light, letting only the yellow get to the paper and only letting yellow back out to be seen. Print yellow over blue and the yellow ink passes yellow light (everything except blue!) to the blue ink which passes all the blue (but no yellow) to the paper which reflects the resulting nothing back through the same two layers so you see black. For the CRT using three guns (Red, Green, Blue) to make light yellow a mixture of red and green is needed, add blue to that combination and the result on screen is white. In the world of offset litho printing OPro will approximate the results wanted on the film separations so long as the colours are set to overprint, not knock out. For the type example above, use your blue and yellow type, set the colours to overprint and separate to spot colours - two films not three - print using normal transparent inks and abracadabra - green(ish) where the two overlap. Really the colour depends on the inks used and will be dark tending towards black as blue and yellow are complementary colours. Using process separations the blue will be a mix of cyan and magenta, add yellow over that to get - muddy black. And as David Pilling wrote, there is no difference in printing between white (no ink) and transparent (no ink) so all tints are transparent. BUT I think all dtp colour handling is derived from the Postscript language which was one of the ingredients of the start of dtp. Postscript doesn't know anything about transparency, and to postscript every tint of black is a solid grey even though it will be printed as dots of black with nothing between. I post all this detail (which is probably in the colour supplement manual but that is at home and I cannot check it now) because when we understand how the processes work we will have more understanding of why OPro works the way it does and what we are asking for in future revisions. There are probably many approaches to this. Choices are held in !OvnPro.AutoRun.!Choices - obviously you could have several Choices files and just rename the one you want into that directory before OPro is run. Another slightly riskier thing is that Choices is just a script file, it can be run at any time. So 'Bobs' applet folder could have his Choices file in it, and that would get run, after the main Choices, and probably overwrite its effect. Or you can invoke the Choices file in other ways e.g. from a button. From:(Peter Bell) >I have a need for this facility. One could probably just have a rule that tabs at the end of a line are not constrained by the right indent. It's probably bad practice to use tabs to get from one line to the next - but I suspect a common one. From:(Andrew Piper) >Stationery 1.04... OK, sounds like I've introduced a bug. As they say, printing to ArcFax is a good way to preview things. Seriously though. How to print business cards with crop marks? Set up a page with the size of your business card. So we're talking about a page e.g. 1x2 inches big, rather than the usual A4 page. Design your card on it. Now use the Thumbnails print format, tick 'all same' and use the 'Custom' entry on the Thumbnail menu to set how many cards you want per printer page e.g. 4x3 and the gaps between them. Finally click on Print setup and select 'Printers marks'. A nice thing is to use an elliptical frame with a border for your cards. Here is something I discovered today: Create a new rectangular frame or select an old one. Menu: Object > Modify... or press F7 In the top right of the dialog box there is a writable icon called 'radius' Changing this to a positive value gives the rectangle rounded corners. Very nice. But you can give it a negative value, which makes them stick out instead. This doesn't redraw correctly, but it prints out ok, I've just checked. There seems to be a bug in this version of OP (2.46) - if you reopen the dialog box the value has become corrupted - you need to correct it if you want to make any other modifications. If this breaks something, don't hold me responsible, you didn't have to do it. (The manual does specify that the value must be positive.) -- Phoible n. It works very nicely once you've set it up, the system then is ready to go! Whilst 2x4 is doable at home, I think 2x3 might be needed in a commercial print shop because the borders are better. File size = 14k only for one card! o o o Special techniques allow 6 or 8 (2x4) standard Business Cards to be printed onto an upright A4 sheet, economising on card & needing only one 'page' to be laid out by the designer. Ovation 'page size' is small, set to precisely the size of a business card, 90x55 mm using master page -> page guidelines. A large frame of 90x55 covers the entire page surface. The !Imposit applet is enabled (Imposition = arranging items on printed sheet), and following special print settings are remembered 'with' the document: Centre enabled. Full printer's crop marks enabled; these show on-screen. 'Thumbnails' (added to Print Dialogue by !Imposit) All Same enabled, Paper Area 2x4 enabled. Scale 100%. Because the 'pages' are small, 2 columns of 4 rows can be imposed as 'thumbnails' onto the relatively large A4 portrait sheet. View-> Options-> Pasteboard may be enabled to show a non-printing frame to contain these printer's notes. Yes thumbnails enable you to produce several cards on the same sheet. Unfortunately it still does not address the problem, I do not want the cards or whatever to all be the same or even the same size. I do not think this is unreasonable as it makes economic sense to put several small jobs on one piece of film. Can we please have crop marks round frames! I have, as been suggested by Kieth Parker, drawn my own but this is just a stop gap. email: a.esplen@btinternet.com To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Fri Sep 5 14:26:31 1997 Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA45117 for david ; Fri, 05 Sep 97 14:26:29 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 873449542:06:21574:44; Fri, 05 Sep 97 09:52:22 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id bz0522037; 5 Sep 97 9:51 BST From:(D.A.Symes) Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Fri, 05 Sep 1997 08:41:01 +0100 Organization: Subject: EFP and Ov Pro To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970905.084101.29@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Tue, 2 Sep 97 19:02:34 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c > John Percy Kerslake, kerslake@SEES.bangor.ac.uk Wrote: > I have also failed to get EF Pro work. Hi, depends which version you are using, the early versions of EFP had a few problems, the version 4.12b I'm using is very, very stable. I believe the latest fix version is 4.12c on the Fabis Web site, which you can upgrade your version, if you are a registered user. www.fabis@demon.co.uk will take you to the index page. I used to have a few fonts that would load with EF versions pre Pro, but were refused by EFP. Fabis explained to me, that some converted fonts don't have the same internal header name as the Font directory name. One font I remember EFP wouldn't touch, even though it'd loaded and worked with previous versions, was call "BlackLet" But inside The Font directory,(IntMetrics), it looked like this: Blackletter[0d][0d][0d] etc... The names didn't match. When the internal name was changed to match the font directory name, EFP accepted it. Sorry to shout here, but... BEWARE MAKING ARBITRARY CHANGES TO FONT FILES, you could end up in trouble if you don't know what you are doing... :-( Fabis do sell a small application that will modify Font file names. I understand that a new font manager is likely to appear with the much vaunted Galileo system. My main concern in regard to fonts, however, has nothing to do with the font imaging (glyph rendering) available. Two questions - thus - 1. Will support be avaiable for full UCS4 encodings -- including combining characters (as in ISO/IEC 10646-1 + AMD1, etc)? 2. Will Ovation Pro handle full 32-bit character encodings? Having thrust these questions to your attention you may well ask "How important is this?" The answer is a two part one :-- a. In order to support the Java interpreter which specifies that UCS2 encoding should be used ------ VERY IMPORTANT! b. In order to future-proof any change the mechanism will also need to handle codes which extend beyond the sixteen-bit currently approved as standard. Working Groups currently have drafts for several code areas using 17 and 18 bits. A couple of years will see them approved. If Ovation Pro is ready to handle multiple byte codes and multiply encoded characters I am happy. All we have to do then is beat Acorn over the head about their new Font Manager. kh PS The full gamut of character encodings ranges from 7-bit (ISO-646) to up to six 32-bit encodings for one glyph! I am on RiscOS 3.7 on StrongArm. >Is this the same module? Can the Applet be fixed to see the correct name? Err. SpriteExtend and SpriteExtensions are one and the same. I'm a bit baffled as to why the AW applet would demand SpriteExtend, sure there's lots of CC modules it will ask for e.g. ImageExtend, but SpriteExtend is an Acorn one built into RISC OS. I think SpriteExtend 0.99 was the version Acorn issued to allow the use of JPEG's on RISC OS 3.50. I'd be inclined to open up the AW applet and double click the !Install file and see what happens. Getting the latest AW modules is always a bit of a problem if you're not a CC user. I guess the solution is a combination of the AWViewer that comes on the SA CD ROM and visiting CC's web pages. OPro takes the new document either from an internal fixed definition which is A4 or from the 'default' document (if you've used File=>Save as default) which can be anything you like. I'm not so sure about going off the printer paper size. I'm biased, I'd assume 99% of documents are A4, and anything else you'd think hard about. You might also want to use an A4 page and print it as A3 using scaling, so there's not necessarily a connection. One could probably just have a rule that tabs at the end of > a line are not constrained by the right indent. This would be a workable arrangement, especially where the outdented text is at the end of para. I guess that it would be relatively easy to implement, and would make some layouts considerably easier. Obviously, on any line other than the last in para, anything which results in re-justification would cause a problem with the layout. The ultimate would be some way of embedding a string within the body text (as for an embedded graphic?), but marked for placement at the outdent tab. If this embedding could be placed at any point in the body text, then the outdent string would always be tied to the appropriate piece of text. - Probably not easily achievable, so don't waste time on it - the 'Tab' method would be fine for the majority of cases. > It's probably bad practice > to use tabs to get from one line to the next - but I suspect a common one. In Ovation Pro 2.46, if I set View->Spelling errors, to underline misspelled words (a very useful feature), I find that often every word becomes underlined, eg when I reload a document, or make some change to settings. This often corrects itself after a little typing, without redrawing the text so it appears wrong until redrawing occurs. Is there any fix for this, or likelihood of it? Make two Key macros: Ctrl S {'CS_S} (the ' is important) Ctrl Shift S {checkstory(0)} Look in !Menus and search for "spell_entry". Change the C_S on that line to CS_S. This will reverse the function of the two macros and also correct the menu entry for Check story. If you make your doc page size 90x55 (or whatever) and draw up a different card on each page of the document, won't OP lay them all up on an A4 (or whatever) sized sheet with crop marks around each 'page' (ie card)? We have a printer here who only uses crop marks on the outsides of a group of cards (ie he butts all the cards together to save guillotine ops). A bit shonky, I know (prohibits bleeds for a start), and I can't help but think the technique may have evolved from Tony T's solution with Impression. All you need to do is create your different sized cards as different chapters in the same document. Then print as I outlined in a previous message, but after selecting Thumbnails instead of clicking on 'All the same', just click on the relevant 'Print area' option. Turn Printers marks on. You will then have a sheet with different sized cards, all with their own crop marks. It works, I tried it. If it is for an > A4 printer, then !Printers will automatically default to an A4 printable > area even if your page is larger. This raises an issue we've being trying to get comfirmation (and a fix) on for a while now. Do printers have page limits built in (in firmware), and if so what's required to override them? People with Novajet printers can't get them to print anything longer than about 2.5m. Yeh, well that's Novajets, I thought. 'Till I wanted to print a page 840x420 (A1 length, A2 width) and the print stopped at exactly 594mm, and asked for another sheet of paper. In an A3 printer (BJC4100 ? I think) the print stopped at 420mm, and asked for the 2nd sheet, and my A4 printer coughed at 297mm. These don't look like arbitrary numbers to me! Configuring all sorts of weird page sizes below these numbers and things work exactly as they should. To get 'round it, I would have thought that all the printer driver (via the application?) would have to do is to send a new page signal, but not a crank forward (sheet feed) signal - so that pg 2 starts to print immediately. Yes?, but what happens to the bottom/top print margins? Banner printing applications manage, so it can't be too hard. Where does the fix get written - in OP?, in the printer driver? Anyone? thanks:tim -- Complexity and Contradiction - in search of the absurd, the terrifying, and the fragile Tim King, De-Sign: ph +64 9 4783114, fax +64 9 4783164 To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Tue Sep 9 00:53:02 1997 Received: from relay-9.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA45206 for david ; Tue, 09 Sep 97 00:53:00 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 873709127:10:01747:43; Mon, 08 Sep 97 09:58:47 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id cc1026544; 8 Sep 97 9:58 BST From:(D.A.Symes) Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Mon, 08 Sep 1997 09:06:26 +0100 Organization: Subject: Index and Contents applets To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970908.090626.44@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Sat, 06 Sep 1997 19:42:36 BST X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c Ovation Pro. Hi, Ov Pro friends, Had a couple of problems with Applets recently, found out what/why. So I'm posting in case others might have encountered the same problems. Index Applet. I've been using the Index applet recently, and came upon a problem. I've sorted out a work round to it, but thought you might be interested in the actual prob'. I've found that the Index applet which works quite well, has one particular problem, in that when it creates its own chapter at the end of the document, it takes the last chapter in the Master page as its template for the creation. If that last chapter has a footer, Index tries to cram all the indexing information into the footer and it gets lost. So its important that you have, or create a new blank chapter at the end of the document Master page after last chapter; Remove the footer if it's copied from a previous chapter. Do the Index business as detailed in Peter's help file. You should then find you have the end of the document proper, a blank chapter, followed by the index. Click in the blank chapter... Then... ->Page->Delete chapter. You should now be left with the document followed by the index. Set style and format as required. =============================== Contents Applet. Had a serious lot of trouble with this one, until a chance experiment showed where the problem was. I discovered the Contents Applet will only create a Contents successfully in straight pages. In other words it will not do it with a document of facing pages. Once that was discovered it worked okay... Not much help if the doc is in facing pages though, but then.... can't have everything I suppose. So applets have to remember the $Dir location in their start up routine. The $Dir variable is adjusted during applet loading to point to the current applet. This is all exciting stuff, but until there's a spec. from Acorn and some indication that it's actually going to appear on desktop machines as opposed to toasters and mobile phones. I have my own wish list for a new font manager. In fact you'd hope that Acorn would consult on what everyone wants in a new font manager, since we've all got about 10 years experience of whats wrong with the old one.
