Chris said: Isn't that a little *too* simple? Maybe David should add an O button, so that I can select the .oblique variant of some of my fonts. ;-) and I respond again: Yes I knew it was too simple, and I was ignoring the fact that some fonts - usually monoweight sans serif types - do not have an italic form but an oblique which one uses in the place of an italic. As David pointed out, there may be other variations which make my simplistic suggestion impractical. I am sure that by now David knows what we need and we can leave him to sort it out. Perhaps you could use something like that to make >your life easier :) It's partly a problem in MailList, which could probably make things easier by setting a different bounce address for its messages. Mark Sawle patched it for his Messenger mailing list, and I have had the same issue with the Newsbase list though haven't really attempted to fix it. But perhaps we could come up with a MailList patch which made things easier. It might also be an issue with the recieving software - MailList does put a precedence header on messages which should stop vacation programs etc from replying, and I'm a little surprised that it doesn't stop bounces too - but then, it's some time since I last read how this is all supposed to work. Cheers, Nick ________________ Well done Nick, I think you've got it about right in this form, but maybe a leading full stop would be needed to eliminate intermediate weights like demibold. You have put it in understandable form for non-programmers (like me) while providing the logic for a programmer to work with (which I didn't). I had been wondering much the same thing, as articles & digests from mailists are mostly anonymous (i.e. it isn't obvious that they're from a mailist) and just get mixed up in one's email. All except the Termite list, that is. Their method of automatically putting [termite] at the start of the Subject field is the best I have seen so far, and my suggestion would be to put [OvPro] ahead of the subject. This could apply to both digest and separate article forms. -- John M Ward. * * * AcornCode v1.00 * * * A2 rpc6sa/S2g/I420m/48+2 ro++++/tv/sp !BB ed+++ dk !nl EC+ pc-- To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Tue Aug 5 00:54:08 1997 Received: from relay-10.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA43442 for david ; Tue, 05 Aug 97 00:53:57 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 870693329:14:21123:59; Mon, 04 Aug 97 12:15:29 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id ba1312545; 4 Aug 97 12:15 BST From:(Richard Barrass) Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Mon, 04 Aug 1997 09:26:04 +0100 Organization: Lucent Technologies Subject: Re: OPM: Re: ovationp-l digest To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970804.092604.24@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Fri, 01 Aug 1997 11:01:44 +0100 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------3B1C55340D5DD2ED241B1980 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Dave Floyd wrote: > >On Tue 29 Jul, MailList for RISC OS wrote: > > > >> In message <19970724.131649.37@risc.demon.co.uk> you wrote: > >> > >> > On Mon 21 Jul, Gavin Dewar wrote: > >> > >> > Any chances of this list being sent out as one mailing, instead of > >about 20 > >> > separate messages? > >> > >> I'll give it a go. > >> > >> -- > >> Ian MacDougall > >> Beebug Ltd > At first I liked this idea but along with the bulk of the subscribers who have > replied so far, found the reality to be rather less satisfactory. That's an unfortunately common thing to do. I've recently debated the point with some people on another mailing list (notably the other guy that has maintainer access) as he wanted subject modification as well. The difference between him and me is that he (at the time) wasn't sorting incoming mail into folders (or whatever you call them), which I am. It was some use to him, and just irritating for me (I find it aesthetically displeasing). Clearly, I don't like it, but I concede it has some use for people who have no facility available for filtering mail into folders. (In an ideal world they'd get something that let them, but this isn't an ideal world :) -- I won't use words again May god stand between you they don't mean what I meant and harm in all the empty they don't say what I said places where you must walk To unsubscribe send a message to: maillist@risc.demon.co.uk with the Subject: SIGNOFF ovationp-l To subscribe the Subject line should be: SIGNON ovationp-l From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Tue Aug 5 13:49:21 1997 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA43493 for david ; Tue, 05 Aug 97 13:49:19 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 870767879:15:13033:43; Tue, 05 Aug 97 08:57:59 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id aa1210443; 5 Aug 97 8:57 BST From:(Ray Dawson) Sender: imac@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 05 Aug 1997 08:47:58 +0100 Organization: Subject: SuperShift problem To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970805.084758.96@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Sun, 03 Aug 97 22:12:45 BST X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.59c Status: R I find Supershift a very useful applet, but it does have one problem. Seems to me that those of using mail programs would rather have the digest, those using news readers want separate messages. I get rather irritated when I'm working quietly on the Alpha at work, and every two or three minutes get another message announcing "New mail from imac@demon..." etc, not to mention the "48 new mail messages" as I log on. However, it is easier to keep just those messages I'm interested in if they are separate. Alan Adams ARM at home, DIGITAL at work. The current SuperShift depends on the sequence you type things - results in the being capitalised. The alternative way of writing it would be to use book marks to look at the situation at the caret position - IF the character at the caret is a space AND the previous one was a full stop then capitalise the current character. In fact the latest version is a mix, because if the caret is positioned at the start of the document it always capitalises (prevchar()==-1). I was editing the run around curve in a picture that had suddenly developed a long spur sticking out into the text (for no obvious reason). Ovation then froze the machine and only an Alt-Break would do anything. On going back into the document the picture is still there but is being shown without a frame boundary. Any attempt to click on the picture or doing anything that cause the text around it to re-flow causes a complete lock up that again I can only clear with Alt-Break. Any advice would be welcome. The problem can be repeated every time I re-open this particular document. OV-Pro allows this but wraps anything beyond the indent marker onto the next line. We need to use the feature when setting out examination papers (the right end tab sets the position of the marks awarded for each question) and when typing minutes of meetings (to align 'for attention by' at the end of the appropriate lines). Perhaps Circle Software are also looking at this problem(?). I can assure you that John Skingley of Circle Software has been looking into this for some time. As I understand it, the problem rests with the CC Impulse module. This was made available in the public domain, but the source code is not made available by CC. I gather that Beebug (and hence St David) are understandably reluctant to incorporate it into Ovation Pro in case CC decline to support Impulse anymore and do not allow others to access the source code. Whilst all this makes good commercial sense, Impact is by far the best data management package on the Acorn platform. Aditionally Impact's ability to use Impact with Impression Publisher & Style, gives it again by far the best reporting facility under RiscOS. For this reason I delayed upgrading to OP until a couple of months ago and, whilst I find OP is splendid, I also find that I am still making much more use of Impression as I have so many Impression templates working from Impact that I use every day, I find it a chore to change back and forth between the two document processor packages. Perhaps if sufficient IP users make their feelings on this question to Beebug we may be able to get some action. However it is said JPEG printing does work with Draw. The explanation is as follows. Within RISC OS there is a state 'JPEG intercept'. If this is true then attempts to render JPEG images are passed to the printer driver, if it is false they are rendered in the usual way. If you render a JPEG and the Turbos have not set the JPEG intercept state then the crash results. Turbos only set the JPEG intercept state if they see a JPEG in the page to be printed during a printer page prescan pass. So the first part of getting JPEG's to print to Turbos is to enable printer prescan passes in OvavationPro. This can be done by setting printchoices2() argument 0, bit 3. i.e. change printchoices2(17,0,0,0); in AutoRun.!Choices to printchoices2(8+17,0,0,0); Doing this is not enough. When a printer driver prints a page, it passes the application doing the printing a series of horizontal strips - from bottom to top in the case of Turbos. For some reason during a prescan pass, the Turbos only hand on the first strip. This means that even if your application supports prescan passes, unless a JPEG is seen in the first strip, the intercept state will not be set and a crash will occur. The final part of getting JPEG's to print is to ensure that you have a JPEG near the bottom of the page - maybe a small all white one. A corollary of all this is that you can make Draw crash when printing JPEG's to Turbos by positioning the JPEG near enough the top of the page. And finally to spoil it all, I suspect that some other things go wrong with prescan passes enabled 8-) David Pilling -- email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.netlink.co.uk/users/pilling web: http://www.pilling.demon.co.uk post: David Pilling, P.O. Two of those problems concern Overprint and Knock out. Allthough I defined the Bodytext colour to Overprint Black, the spot colour plate shows knocked out text! Also when I apply the overprint colour as a local effect. On the other hand: objects containing graphics (sprites or draw) do NOT knock out these graphics in the spot colour plate. This is OK as long the graphics are rectangular, so that you can change the object fill colour to white, thus forcing a sort of knock out manually. But if the graphics have a irregular shape, or contain white colours (!), then this method doesn't work. Publisher does this job perfectly. But perhaps I am doing something wrong. Who can help? The applet can correct some typos as they arise, for example it will correct capitalisation mistakes of the type 'THe' to 'The' as you type. (Hence the name). It can also insert double spaces after punctuation marks. It's this which has been improved over the last version: you can now specify which punctuation marks trigger double spacing. You can also request that some punctuation marks only cause space doubling at the end of a sentence, to avoid full stops which mark abbreviations being followed by two spaces as used to happen. The choices can also be saved between sessions (before you had to edit the script file). -- Rupert Thompson Queens' College, Cambridge, CB3 9ET, UK http://rjet1.quns.cam.ac.uk/ (when my computer's on!) In my previous comments I was too quick to equate Turbos and Laser Direct. My tests were done on LD. Seemingly only LD has the problem with the prescan pass not covering the page, Turbos do not. The point is that if you have Turbos, enabling prescan passes is enough to fix things. Only LD users have to worry about getting the JPEG in the right place. In my experience prescans do upset Artworks rendering on Acorn printer drivers - something which the next version of OPro works around. Although since you don't need prescans on Acorn drivers this is perhaps academic. Eg : if I write the sentence "J'essaie d'expliquer d'une fa=E7on simple que tout n'est qu'=E9lision." Ovation dictionnary splits my sentence into : J'essaie / d'expliquer / d'une / fa=E7on /simple / que / tout /n'est/ qu'=E9lision/. instead of : / j'/ essaie/ d'/ expliquer/d'/une /fa=E7on / simple / que / tout / n'/ est / qu' / =E9lision/. Yes, don't bother. As OPro stands there is 100% transparency and 0% transparency and nothing in between. Tints are not connected with transparency. Transparency would be a good feature. In fact it might be a 'killer feature'. It could be done and as long as you only wanted output on simple printers it would not be too hard. However I'd not like to have to sort it out on things like PostScript printers. Of course as of now RISC OS only supports 100% and 0% transparency too. I don't think you can do this as things stand. The right indent is the end of the line, nothing goes past it. Maybe an interesting special case to add one day - but only if there's a lot of support for it. One solution may be to have a new style "long line" which has a bigger right indent, and apply it over the lines which you want to extend to the right. I have looked at adding Impulse support, it's quite simple. Impulse was designed to fit easily into the way Impression handles mailmerge which is akin to how OPro does it. From:(Andrew Piper) >Has anybody else had any problems with the latest release (v1.04) of the >Stationery applet? On a number of occasions it's given me an error "String >not recognised" when I've first clicked on a document, and only worked >properly on all the subsequent attempts. Is this error peculiar to me? >I'm using Ovation Pro v2.46 on a RPC with SA. I've heard of no problems. The sort of things I'd wonder about, are does the problem depend on you clicking on a particular document, and have you made use of the new facility to have sub stationery directories? Of course this is happening because the 'applet wizzard' has gone away (to where superheroes go (Milton Keynes)) and I've taken over 8-( From: Ian Goulbourne >I've tried RTFM lots of times but I can't save my button bar set up >between sessions. I've clicked on save as default etc but to no >avail. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? The button bar format, i.e. which buttons appear and the depth, is contained in the Macros file. Menu Misc->Macros... and then click on Save. Not ideal but it came out that way. From: Paul Sprangers >Allthough I defined the Bodytext colour to Overprint Black, the >spot colour plate shows knocked out text! >Also when I apply the overprint colour as a local effect. I am aware of a bug in 2.45/2.46, this is that if you have text on a transparent background then it always knocks out on layers underneath. If your text is in a frame with a solid background then there should be no problem. I'm working on fixing this bug at the moment. >On the other hand: objects containing graphics (sprites or draw) >do NOT knock out these graphics in the spot colour plate. >This is OK as long the graphics are rectangular, so that you can >change the object fill colour to white, thus forcing a sort of >knock out manually. But if the graphics have a irregular shape, >or contain white colours (!), then this method doesn't work. This is actually deliberate - but if it's wrong then it can be fixed. In the next version ArtWorks spots will work, and I think these also work as regards knockouts.
