If I have a document open and go to another, or another app that has the cursor, a grey cursor flashes in the OP window that isn't being written in. I often start typing, thinking I am in the window where the flashing cursor appears to be, and end up putting text in the wrong window. What further confuses is that the frame outline stays red as well. It doesn't happen with two OP document windows, but it happens with OP and Zap, Publisher, or my Voyager email. I've tried 256 colours and 32k and they both do it. However, several recent items have been unreadable in my system (BT's Campus Connect). All the hidden messages do not have a subject stated - is this the reason? They include some from David Pilling and Ian MacDougall, so I'd like to read them as they often contain answers! Yes, I too would like an RTF export facility, partly so that I can send files to my Psion 3a via the A-link. I was pleased to find that version 2.36 of OPro has made import a bit faster, as it seems that all I need to do is use the RISCOS filer to set the imported file type to RTF and then drop it into an open document. Styles are then imported and can be modified to suit. But... The import facility works quite well, but I've found that it often misses the first word of new paragraphs. This put me in a dilemma, as I find that the outline facility of the Psion 3a's Word processor is invaluable when navigating a document with such a small screen. The subheadings also make it much easier to find my way round the document when I drop it into Ovation Pro. However, I then have to trawl through the Psion original (or a text file export) to check my RTF import for omissions! Hardly the way to demonstrate the speedy production of notes after a meeting! As they say, this is not a bug, but a feature. Honest, I put a lot of effort into it. The rational was that like it or not, once a document loses the caret, it still does have a logical 'caret position', so it's better if you can see it. The ghost caret (which is in the style guide, oh yes) also comes into play when you open two views on the same document. However if this causes you trouble, I'm sure we could make the colour user selectable, so that you can make it invisible. Please can OP not wordwrap in/around > the image? OP v2.36 (30/09/96) The image in question was really a little too complex for picture runaround to do a good job with its default settings. My solution to the problem has been emailed to the sender, but it struck me that others might find it useful. I imported the image into a regular frame and then drew around it with the frame drawing tool. I then cut and pasted the image into the new frame. I hope this gave the desired effect. It seemed to work for me. The problem that was seen was caused by the curves that describe the frame becoming crossed over. (If you view the curve you see little loops where this occurs.) Another quick solution where the image is not too complex is to delete the points in the loop, this often corrects the flowing of text around the image. -- Ian MacDougall Beebug Ltd From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Tue Dec 10 14:56:52 1996 Received: from relay-10.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA29727 for david ; Tue, 10 Dec 96 14:56:49 GMT Received: from relay-10.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 850208133:10:04540:46; Tue, 10 Dec 96 08:55:33 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by relay-9.mail.demon.net id ak914502; 10 Dec 96 8:55 GMT From:(Ray Dawson) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Mon, 09 Dec 1996 13:42:32 +0000 Organization: Subject: Re: Phantom Cursor To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19961209.134232.09@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Fri, 6 Dec 96 15:33:00 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 Status: R On Thu 5 Dec 96 (10:28:10 +0000), david@pilling.demon.co.uk wrote: >X-Mailer: ArcBM 1.11 > > > >>Using Ovation Pro 2.36, has anyone else been confused by the phantom >>cursor which flashes in the document even when not selected? > >As they say, this is not a bug, but a feature. Yes, but the inconsistency is that it does *not* happen when you have two or more OP documents open, but *does* happen when you have OP open with Zap or Publisher (possibly others as well). Also under these circumstances (Zap etc has focus) the OP master frame is coloured red, so the ghost caret makes it look like the OP document has the focus (Ok, I know the Title bar isn't yellow, but two out of three indications say it has focus). Again, when two *OP* documents are open, only the window with the focus has the master frame red. >The ghost caret (which is in the style guide, oh yes) also comes into >play when you open two views on the same document. Yes, but see above, not when two OP *different documents* are open. >However if this causes you trouble, I'm sure we could make the colour >user selectable, so that you can make it invisible. How about a different shape cursor for thr non-focus one, like the box in Zap? It is useful to have some indication of where the cursor is when the document doesn't have input focus, but it would be more useful if the frame went grey as well so that there was no confusion. I use 16-to-a-sheet self-adhesive labels for addresses if I don't want to write or type. So I created a stationery item with 16 frames and drag the address to the frame corresponding to the lowest label still in situ. (It is *important* to take labels from the bottom!). This raises a query that has been sitting waiting for a while. When I open a document using my label stationery all is well - just one page. When I draw a frame inside one of my 'guide' frames I immediately get given another page - which is a nuisance because I have to remember not to print it. Because of this, it is impossible to snap the tip of the arrow to the grid, or another object; the endcap always dangles over the edge. Is this a bug or a feature? If the latter, what is the object of it? 2 - The way the text styles overlay one-another in OPro is a significant advance, but I think there is still a requirement for the way Ov1 worked, i.e. disabling all previous styles when selecting a new one. It would be very nice it there was a check-box in the edit styles dialogue which would cause any previous style to be de-selected when the chosen one is selected. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Tony van der Hoff | E-Mail: tony@mk-net.demon.co.uk Buckinghamshire, England | WWW: Member of the TRUST Group of independant IT consultants ---------------------------------------------------------------- From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Thu Dec 19 13:47:03 1996 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA30346 for david ; Thu, 19 Dec 96 13:47:01 GMT Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 850986721:6:07095:52; Thu, 19 Dec 96 09:12:01 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by relay-5.mail.demon.net id ay525881; 19 Dec 96 9:11 GMT From:(Richard Travers) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 10:38:05 +0000 Organization: Subject: Re: Your subscription to: ovationp-l To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19961218.103805.03@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Fri, 13 Dec 96 13:13:28 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 Status: R On Thu 12 Dec 96 (08:43:32 +0000), david@pilling.demon.co.uk wrote: > >Does anyone know the name of the module which causes OvPro to display > codes > >in the menus instead of recognizable words? > > I have a report which alleges UnAppComp from Argonet does this. Any such frames are not actually printed. I use them e.g. to overlay a frame with text on a graphics frame, and it does not work as it should. I have a HP 4ML, and there is a problem if I use the LasJet4 definition, but it works OK with the LasJet4-PS definition however. This weekend I got a 693C Deskjet and use the 850C definition which is supplied with Printers 1.54 and RiscoOS 3.7 and the same problem arises. I think the following reply bears repeating in the light of recent questions. Perhaps I should put it this way - what follows is a bug fix, if you have SA, use Acorn printer drivers, have an early copy of OPro 2.36, and don't follow the intstructions below, sooner or later you'll end up with non-printer rendering Draw files. Later shipped copies of OPro have been adjusted to fix things. And I quote... RISC OS 3.70 - as with the Strong ARM, supports antialiasing of text on non solid background colours. So if you have RISC OS 3.70 we enable that feature. Problem seems to be that the Acorn printer drivers, don't realise that they should not do this. If you have, say CC Laser direct, or don't have 3.70, then none of this matters. Otherwise, these are the solutions. (1) The official fix. Load !OvnPro.AutoRun.!Custom into Edit. Remove these two lines; fontsetup(fontbits,0,0,0); pixsetup(fontbits,0x2,0,0); Resave and rerun OPro. (2) The high risk fix. Put the following file in !OvnPro.Library (type B24) --------------------------------------8<--------------------------------------- //->!Customfix void customprintfix(int fontbits, int file) { fontsetup(fontbits,0,0,0); pixsetup(fontbits,0x2,0,0); } void main(void) { string s; int fontbits; int EVENT_PRSTART = 0x10c; int EVENT_PREND = 0x10d; s="RMEnsure FontManager 3.35 Error 0"; fontbits=(osclis(s)==0); fontsetup(fontbits,0,0,0); pixsetup(fontbits,0x2,0,0); addeventhandler(EVENT_PRSTART, 0, "customprintfix"); addeventhandler(EVENT_PREND, fontbits, "customprintfix"); } ---------------------------------------8<------------------------------------------ (1) switches off the feature permanently. (2) merely disables it whilst printing is going on. You might get some untidy redraws on screen during printing, but not too bad in general. The problem is in the modules behind Draw and, I presume, behind this facility in OP and effectively everything else which allows drawing (except fully fledged CAD programs which will write their own modules). I agree this is non-desirable, it's a feature of the way the Draw module renders lines, and I hope to fix it one day. Ray Dawson; >How can I simulate the Enter key (not return) in a text file, ie the equivalent >command to {nextframe} in Publisher? In what sort of text file? If you're importing DDF, then it's just the same as in Impression. OPro DDL is {newpage}. There is also a macro so you can have type("{newpage}"); Ah ha in a raw text file... Code 12 == form feed is what you want. Although if you've got all text files going via the DDF convertor, then {nextframe} will do. >Also, can OP do linked text frames on a Master page yet Not yet. Messy area. OPro is not as useful here as the old Ovation. I am not aware of an easy approach, but obviously the more time consuming methods do work. Copy your new template into !OvnPro.Applets.!Statnry.Stationary (or Stationery if you have the spell checked version). Peter Blenkinsop; >What am I doing wrong? >I have version 2.26. Question and answer there. SuprShft will only work with 2.36 and newer. You need to sort out with Beebug why you've not got the free upgrade to 2.36. Any such frames are not actually printed. I use them e.g. to The old antialiasing + SA thing, this time for text in transparent frames rather than in Draw files. See my reply last time for the fix.
