This means that I am left in bold italic. Strangely enough I can answer the question with one line... /lfa/{seteffect(BOLD)}{seteffect(ITALIC)}Looking For Atlantis{NLock}{seteffect(NORMAL)} To explain, keyboard text is buffered, so all the effects were executing *then* the text would be output, but by that time you're back to Normal. So as above, we get - go bold+italic, type 'Looking for Atlantis', Num lock (does nothing but causes text to be flushed), then go normal. It only occurs rarely using !Publisher, but is present almost 60% of the time with !OvationPro. The problem manifests itself with 3 symptoms: 1. The cross-hairs, which appear when creating a frame, leave occasional traces of themselves across the document window. They can be "rubbed out" afterwards by "wiping" another window across the document. 2. The little red text cursor also leaves traces of itself on the screen which can similarly be erased to (1) - can be quite confusing whilst typing text. 3. A rarer problem to either (1) or (2) - The document window will suddenly reduce itself to a letter-box shaped window about 1" in depth and refuse to be extended any larger, although the horizontal dimensions can be changed. The only solution is to "quit" !Publisher or !Ovation and reload the applications, after which they will behave satisfactorily. These problems ONLY occur with !Publisher and !Ovation. All other applications (editors, spreadsheets etc...) run without problems. So far I have been unable to track down the offending module. Help! Whilst HTML import is simple, HTML export raises a lot more questions - how much are you going to support inside OPro e.g. hyper text links and so on. Alan Stout; > Cross-hair and Cursor problem The first two of those are eor'ing problems. For example the caret is eor'd onto the screen, and then eor'd again to remove it, if something has changed between those two eor's then you get bits left. I wonder if this depends on the screen mode you are in? It might be that parameters of the screen mode are upsetting the areas being redrawn. Otherwise this is very odd. > A rarer the document window will suddenly > reduce itself to a letter-box shaped window about 1 Again may be oddities of the screen mode - otherwise both OPro and Impression have a 'safety feature' of if something goes wrong during a redraw they shut the window up in a corner of the screen. Either the old style RISC OS method which prevents Printers queuing the print job, and subsequently printing in the background. This mode is better for those with Turbo drivers and Laser Direct which don't support new style RISC OS printing. Or you can make use of the new RISC OS printing features. In which case (sticking my neck out here) you don't need print speed. This mode is controlled by the first parameter of the function printchoices() which is called in the file !OvnPro.AutoRun.!Choices - replace the 0 with a 1 if you want to use the new Acorn facilities. I have long wondered why printing in the background (if selected on Printers Connections menu) did not work, and also have wondered why 'append to file' also does not work - if you elect to print to file in order to get control back quickly, you cannot append, because what you send second overwrites the first. I have now tried what David Pilling suggests, and it is brilliant, and return is almost immediate. Why not have this option available in a Choices or Preferences menu rather than an obscure instruction buried at page 161 in the OvnPro manual. On a somewhat unrelated note, I recently layed out a moderately large book in OP (~180 pages). All went well but I was asked if it were possible for me to provide the PS output with sixteen pages "imposed" on the two sides of one actual A3 page, so that when it was folded up (3 folds) and trimmed it would form a 16 page A6 booklet. Now pamphlet mode doesn't quite handle this. I was wondering if this could be made available at some stage in the future? One change in 2.36 is that when the DDF loader is seen, it disables text loading, in such a way that all text files are passed via the DDF to text convertor. The advantage is that DDF files no longer need to be typed, I suspect you've just discovered the downside. If this is the case it's easy to edit the loader to stop it doing this, and go back to the old situation. Graham Allen; >On the subject on simple HTML import, there's a quite nice tool around >which converts HTML to Impression's doc description language (among >other things), which does a good job of reproducing the text portion of >an HTML document. If this is other than Ben Summers Impression import/export modules, then it would be interesting to know of a url for it. It is a useful thing to bear in mind that Impressions DDF is a powerful tool which is supported by OPro. So if you feel like sitting down and writing text in DDF you can do. Or you can use those programs which output DDF. Probably the current lack of rule offs is the main snag. David Allen; >BTW where was the information that this 'new feature' of !Printers had been >activated ? I cannot find it in my SA Upgrade Readme nor in the new >!Printers Readme When Acorn say 'background' they mean 'non-multitasking' in other words if you opt for background printing, then whilst the document is rendered nothing else can do anything. Once this phase is complete then you do get background spooling of the file to the printer port. This is just as it has been for a few years now - however no doubt the SA has shifted the balance in favour of printing to file - it's a lot faster at rendering in other words. If you opt for the default set up, then you do get multitasking whilst printing - not much, and it's probably dangerous to do anything in the middle of it. But can be useful. Turbo drivers and Laser directs have their own queuing system and in my experience are happier with the default OPro set up. When I do a Ctrl-S with the cursor in a misspelt word and the Spellcheck window comes up, may we have a 'highlight' bar in the suggested words pane? This can then be controlled by up/down cursor keys. 2. Following on from this, Replace as a default action icon so that replaces the misspelt word by the one highlighted. At present all this entails mouse activity. 3. Ovation P does a nice job of sucking in a formatted text story (sans any frames) and styles via the Doc Desc 'language' (was it DDF or DDL??) from Impression. I find this extremely satisfactory. So I guess you can go HTML text -> Ovation nicely. In addition with MS Word you can suck HTML into Word (using things called 'internet assistants - free add-ons) then presumably to RTF. Ovation can read in RTF, yes? Probably some dropoffs on that route. But I guess the Ben S. route is 'simpler'. A particularly nice way of making [large] web images for a company intranet, by the way, is using MS PowerPoint + the relevant Assistants to convert a slide show. PS commentators generally deplore the use by CC of their own subdir inside one's !System, this being non-standard and possibly irritating. At least Ovation tells users what to expect from the installation & protection schemes, in the rel notes. For example if you buy a new hard disc - Impression mysteriously says you have to re-install but forgets to warn you to save user dicts. >>The problem is ArtWorks rendering, you can avoid it by just getting rid of the Artworks applet. However... that being so, the modules concerned are CCs and should live in !Boot.Resources.!System.!CCShared.RMStore Installing a CC program usually creates this, but no doubt you could make it by hand. > From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Thu Nov 14 09:03 GMT 1996 > From: Graham Allan > Subject: RE: Various > To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L > X-Posting-Date: Tue, 12 Nov 1996 9:44:19 -0600 (CST) > X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS > X-Apparently-From: > X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 > > >Oh I think being able to import HTML from any browser and preserving the effects > >would be rather nice. [stuff deleted] I've had similar symptoms when trying to apply a style the other day. I created a heading style and set it up to paragraph apply with a key short-cut. When I added a new heading, I wanted to use the short-cut first by typing: This is a heading rather than typing the heading first, then selecting it and applying. However, this froze the machine on the first keypress. My suspicion is that OPro gets confused when there isn't a paragraph on which to apply the style. The other thing to mention about this is that the freeze of the machine is only partial - things like numlock work ok, and the pointer still moves with the mouse, although clicks are ignored - presumably being swallowed by OPro. I would have investigated further, but the job had to be at the printers the next morning...don't they always though ;-) Cheers, Nick -- Nick Kaijaks, PhD Physics Student, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL, UK WWW: http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~phrvn/ Music: http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~music/ mailto:Nick.Kaijaks@warwick.ac.uk Disclaimer: caveat internettor From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Tue Nov 26 13:42:00 1996 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA28865 for david ; Tue, 26 Nov 96 13:41:58 GMT Received: from relay-5.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 848997730:5:00515:42; Tue, 26 Nov 96 08:42:10 GMT Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by relay-6.mail.demon.net id ak615971; 26 Nov 96 8:41 GMT From:(David Pilling) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Mon, 25 Nov 1996 08:55:35 +0000 Organization: Subject: Re: new style bug in Ovation Pro To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19961125.085535.67@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Fri, 22 Nov 96 14:43:51 GMT X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 X-Mailer: ArcBM 1.11 Mr Tony Haines; >I think I've found a bug in version 2.36 on the StrongARM >(I've not managed to get it to break on version 2.31) >It doesn't always seem to work with various alterations, >but this routine always seems to, so do this exactly. Yes. Sorry about this, it's a variation on the "change the style of a single marked line feed bug" which crept in at some stage. Fixed now. Dr A G Gray wrote: > > Could I put forward suggestions for what I imagine would be fairly simple > additions to the functionality of the spelling checker. These are interesting suggestions. The problem is that doing them means scrapping whats there already. Currently Return replaces the marked word in the text with the contents of the writeable in the spell check window. As you edit that text the word list will be hightlighted if a word matches. The word list window opens itself at the word closest to the text in the icon - and keeps opening as you edit that text. This is not a bad way of working if you're looking at the main dictionary, and perhaps the exact word does not exist. Can't see you wanting to scroll through the whole dictionary by cursor key. So do you really want the guess mode and the browse mode to work in different ways... I'll certainly allow you to add happy and sad beeps in the future.
